Guild Wars 2 Usage on Dial up?
Sakura Haruno
My question is will Guild Wars 2 Run as smoothly as guild wars 1 on dial up? because where i live only dial up is being offered. so im kinda stuck O.O
amish lifeguard
Holy shit, stop worrying! The BETA for GW2 Won't be til 2008! Goddamn, stop being so frantic.
Sakura Haruno
=( But I Need To Know.. Lol
amish lifeguard
Noone knows yet. I would say it would be real laggy.
Sakura Haruno
but gw 1 isnt laggy -.- =(((((((((((((
lucifer_uk
lol you really are joking?
GW2 will have a much more in-depth game engine. I seriously doubt if you will be able to have a pleasurable GW2 gaming experience on dial-up.

Nope not joking seeing as 40% of the gw fanbase is dial up simply because of the reason gw 1 runs nicely on dial up.

Crushing Power
It will probably run fairly smoothly as they'd be trying to keep bandwidth usage down, because ANet doesn't have monthly subscription fees to cover too much bandwidth.
Sakura Haruno
actually it takes me less then 4 seconds to load. my fps is 62 and my ping is 102 with this dial up. o.o
Mindtrust
I'm quite sure, that it won't run so smooth on an old dialup (since it will demand much more then GW1, that's my personal guess though).
I'm also quite suprised to read the numbers you gave 40% on dial up O.o can't be true or ?
We must have like less then 1% on dialup here, you have to enter e-bay to get a hold of a dialupmodem.
Why not use a 3G-connection if you can't get a normal broadband, most operators offers 3,6mb/3G connections with unlimited transfer for a flaterate that is very good.

I seriously doubt it's 40%. Closer to 4% than 40%. How come you even still have dial-up? Most places have broadband now. I'm suprised people even play GW on dial-up. Dial-up is nasty for gaming.
Sakura Haruno
As i said guildwars was made to run crisp smooth on dial up i dont even lag unless something like norton or other craps starts up and well for some reason our road gets loads of dial up and 1 broadband and the broadband cost to much etc and the 40% was estimated by anet awile back in a q and a thing. but none the less i asked in kamadan dis 1-5 seeing how many people were dial up and a good majority said they were.at any rate gw 1 plays very good on dial up 62 fps and only around 100 ping = very good.the broadband being offered out here cost 50$ and is direct way and get this every road seps our road is run by verizon ours is tds and well every other road seps ours can get 768 kbps dsl for 15.99 a month and the phone company says we cant get it? 768kbps i know would work for any game mostly and regards to getting dial up modems on ebay. they sell them loads in stores comp usa...etc walmart...not to hard.at any rate i just want something that runs 700kbps-1mb because thats good enough but weve been waiting for along time with no avail.
btw i live in new york, syracuse so lol

Not A Fifty Five
So much for "Location:Secret XD" :P
But yeah.. I highly doubt it will run on dial-up. It's probably coming out in 2 years tho and I'm guessing dial-up will be extinct by then (in America) in today's market

1. GW runs very well on dial-up due to the amount of data that is kept on the server instead of local pc. Things that happen on the server stay on the server.
2. Too early for information on dial-up with GW2. I imagine we will have to wait for the beta to find out how well it will work.
@OP - don't feel bad, a friend lives near downtown Ft. Lauderdale and can't get broadband, only dial-up. She's too far from station for DSL and local cable broadband is very erractic. Cellular broadband is not possible due to too much interference from transformers on property line.

Loading time=RAM usually.
I don't recommend 56k for PvP though.

=( lol hmmmmmmmmmmmmm
cosyfiep
dang your running better on dial up than I am on dsl......

As pointed out, loading times=memory(other than the first time, when you're downloading it), frame rates=memory, CPU, graphics card.
Lag(like rubber-banding, delay in picking up stuff or activating skills) is due to your internet connection, and overall it should stay at similar levels to what you're having now.

Sorry,
but 2-3 years ahead you worry now about what might happen ?
This is still on a low level information state with only ideas presented so far and you worry that much now ?
I would like to say, if you worry so much at this point, you won't make it go GW2 when that's out, as the closer we get, the more you worry.
Seriously, do take it easy and wait until it's properly announced. Things might change gamewise and ISP wise so much in that timeframe that you waste your energy for nothing.

We never know what GW2 might have for instances. 2000 people in your district? Bye Bye 56k.
Sakura Haruno
2000 would be impossible. Xd as its no monthly fees they couldnt support that many in ea dis
Beat_Go_Stick
Hell, I can't even remember the last time I saw a 56k modem.
Probably been at least 6-8 years.....

Easy lie beat go stick. idk why we cant get dsl thow our neighbor now has it..
Atomheart
Well, I believe that by 2009 all countries and areas of the planet will have access to broadband connections, and -well, almost- everyone will be able to afford it. I know it's easy to say that, but the last years evolution is just too fast. I hope that you and anyone who needs/wants DSL will have it soon.
Arduin
You'd better start worrying if your computer wil be able to play GW2. Lot's of power will be needed for games realised in '09

Anyway ... one of the strong selling points of GW(1) has always been the fact that it runs very well on rather old PCs. For example, it was praised in GameSpot's "Great Games that don't require Great Hardware" special. This allows ANet to expand into markets where people cannot afford top-notch hardware, like Eastern Europe, China, etc. I guess that ANet will stick to this strategy: Low minimum hardware requirement, and low bandwidth requirement. It's good for their sales. ANet aren't id-soft.

Myself, I'm running GW on a PC that is more than 3 years old, and I don't see the need to buy a new one simply because GW is running very smooth on it, yet looks beautiful.
Hexum
I find it amazing that in this day and age people still use dial-up.
Shadow of Light
Where I am, dialup is cheap and I get unlimited downloads (though 4 hour cut-offs, which is fine with my limited online time). I very rarely download anything big, so an expensive high-speed connection is unnecessary. GW is the only online game I play at the moment, and it runs wonderfully on dialup.
The only problems are the time it takes to download updates and when I enter (some) new areas for the first time.
GW2? I don't know if I'll buy it at all yet... but if it can't run on dialup then it's a definite no.

As Tetris L stated, ANet has gone after the markets that other big name games have ignored. Gamers, both USA and abroad, who don't have the disposable income to PtP or buy top-line computers or who can't get broadband connections.
I think they will try to keep that market area with GW2.

Perkunas
I play with several that have dialup. I have dialup. DSL and Cable does not reach 5 miles out of town. Maybe in 2 years, but I am not holding my breath. Our small town phone company won't rent access to any DSL providers, and only supplies DSL to people within 3 miles of their office. I live 6 miles from the office. Even if the local DSL did reach out here, I doubt I would be willing to pay $59.99 a month for it. (Small town monopoly.) Dialup is $19.99 a month, attached to the phone bill.
I couldn't play the second generation the online game I played before because I was on dialup. If in 2 years, I am in the same boat, I will play what is available.

Kamatsu
As of this point we don't know enough about GW2 to be able to know/state whether it will run fine on dialup. As we don't know the answer, any comments on it are speculation, thus...
