US Servers need a fix
iokomo
Hi all,
my guild has been noticing, or suffering, from hardcore lag coming from the US servers. It has been a real pain to even play the game in terms of pvp. I really hope that this server issue can be addressed and fixed asap because many people I know, including myself, rather play some other game that do not lag that bad. E.g. I have a T1 connection and last alliance battle game all our ping did not go below 400. This is also true for the pve gaming as well.
I have an high-end computer with an high-end internet line and I sure hope that some maintenance will be done on our servers. I feel that I am being cheated out of my gameplay because I can not play the game.
Oh yeah, this all appeared with that Nightfall thing.
PLEASE FIX THE US SERVERS SO WE CAN PLAY TOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!
TY kind

Same on Eu servers.. 500+ ping

I remember this happening right before nightfall and factions came out and then once they came out, it fixed itself so...
Possibly with the coming of hardmode and all the new content, this lag could be linked to it somehow. I am not very knowledgable in how the servers work but maybe once hardmode is released we will see a decrease in the lag, or at least i hope.

I really hope so because GW is not as much fun as it was prior to the release of NF. It is nothing but a lag-fest and hard to play when you run somewhere and *smack your dead all of the sudden because of your bad ping.

I'm not sure if my problem has something to do with this, but it's becoming unbearable. I've checked all my temps, voltages, drivers, connection, I mean EVERYTHING. It seems to just boil down to guild wars entirely. I'll get periods of extreme lag where I won't even know what I'm doing and the next moment I'm dead, or my computer will just completely freeze up. My computer has been running the same as it has since 4 months ago, and no problems at all until like a month or so ago. I can't even play in a PvP battle without this happening randomly, or where I'm forced to reboot. I'd really like to know what is going on, because the guild I'm in now wants to start GvG and I can't have this crap happening so frequently. My cpu overheating isn't a problem, nor was it before, but I put some arctic silver on there, and it runs a lot cooler than before.
Sorry, just really mad right now.

does Guild Wars ever shut down their servers just to run some server maintenance or even do a simple restart? I know CoH used to shut down every morning at 0600 PST for about 30 minutes just to do a little bit of server maintenance.
Rakeris
Well the way GW works is they could be taking the severs down every day to do maintenance and if they did it right you would never notice...
daraaksii
WoW got server maintenance too. I can't understand why GW don't. I would really help.
Yanman.be
Because GW uses several servers. WoW uses 1 server for everyone(realm).
GW can take a server down, but not an entire cluster of servers.

I think it's due to the Free UW/FoW access weekend, most Americans want to take advantage of this, thus more people online and playing than usual, since you guys rarely have the favor.

As such, it doesn't need server maintainance, since there is no global world data.
The only instances which live for extended periods of time are the district 1 of outposts.
What I find funny about this, is that everyone hates server maintainance. And here's a game that has 0 downtime, and it's not good again.
iokomo
No No Ivy, it has been like that since Nightfall came out. I remember the first day when I was roaming with my noob lvl in Nightfall and I was laggin in pve so bad that I died all the time.
I really hope they do some server maintenance or get new servers or so, because I am not gonna take this any longer.

The lag is terrible this weekend. I havent been able to get much playing time in because of it. But I was told its not ANet's nor the weekend event's fault.
Admael
It was lagging for me after Nightfall was released, but I guess anet weren't as prepared as they thought for the launch, a week after I've notice that my ping has increased to 80-150ms.
With the exceptions of occasional spikes, I'm not seeing any lag. I'm from Northern California.

<---Not getting any lag at all. Not during the weekend, not when NF came out.
Only problem is rubberbanding but, thats something different entirely.

I'm a european player, norwegian actually. And I play on US servers because the EU ones are CRAPTASTIC!
Praise yourself with the ones you have, theyre 10 times better then EU ones......

And on a sidenote GW uses server clusters (or something) so they restart servers in a cycle. I think they have 28 (?) servers for EU, dunno about US. And lag is still better then WoW...
evil joo
I have been noticing the major lagg on the US servers as well ...
What is going on & please fix

I'm on Euro servers and the ping has gone terrible in the last month or so. The perf monitor is almost constantly orange these days. 180ms-340ms seems the norm of late.

There are a lot of misconceptions about the server in this thread. Everybody, if you want to learn a bit more about how GW servers work, read these articles:
http://exe.gotfrag.com/portal/story/32316/?spage=2
http://www.gamesindustry.biz/content_page.php?aid=14931
When you've understood that there isn't one server, but a whole server farm, try to read up about internet connections in general. Lag can be caused anywhere between server and client. The server may be perfectly okay, including his internet connection, but if the peering between the server and your ISP is bad, or any major backbone between the two is choking, you're f*cked.
Actually, the number of server boxes is much larger, and the number is adapted dynamically depending on load. Read the two links I posted above.

I'm in Chicago, IL, USA, and I never have any trouble with lag. I'm on a Comcast cable connection (about 6 megabit downstream). That doesn't even really matter, though. Guild Wars doesn't need a lot of bandwidth. What you folks are experiencing is latency, which is most likely caused by a routing issue...not the server. My ping ranges from about 60ms to 350ms, BTW.
As far as the US having favor...well...pretty much every time the mood strikes me to hit FoW or UW the US has favor, so I don't know what you're talking about. Perhaps it's because when you're online in China we yanks are all sleeping, eh?

Think it can be the server. I usually have no lag issues during the day, but after 10pm till about 2am, I start getting ping spikes up to 10k.
Maybe too many people hit the servers at peak hours??

I'm on 56k...yeah, that's right, -dialup-. And I rarely experience noticible lag unless the servers are packed (weekends, event weekends, primetime during the day, afternoon to early evening on weekdays), and even then it's hardly "unplayable". GW definatly manages bandwidth well; I'd say 90% of the time I play it's perfectly fine. And my ping averages 250ms-380ms...occasionally peaks to 400ms+, but that's not that often. And it's still playable.
If you ask me, I think some people have gotten spoiled by broadband. >_> "Ohnoes, my ping is over 80ms! WTF"
And yes, I am in the US. Illinois, to be exact. I'm not saying people arn't experiencing worse latency issues than I do, but I also don't think it's anything on Anet's part.
There are a thousand things that could happen inbetween your computer and the Anet server which could cause lag.
