There are no expansion packs to GW as each chapter is a stand alone game meaning you don't have to buy all 3 of the chapters. This is unless you want all 3 chapters then go out and buy all 3 of them.

If you want to be able to compete in pvp effectively, all three chapters are almost essential. Though there are pvp-only versions of the game, if thats definately what you are going for, which are cheaper than the full versions. Having all three chapters will allow you to have access to all the classes and skills. If you are not necessarily interested in pvp or just want to check out one chapter and go from there you should check out this thread here:

Guild Wars is an on-line game. There are currently three parts to it. The original Guild Wars (now called Prophecies) and two additional chapters, Factions and Nightfall.
Standalone means that you can purchase any one of the chapters, register it, download the client and play the game for that area. If you buy a second chapter, you have the choice of linking it to your first one by just adding the access key at the log-in screen or you can choose to register it separately.
Linking it allows you to take a character back and forth between the two chapters. Same with the third chapter. An expansion requires you to already own the original game; these chapters have no such requirement.
Each chapter has it's own beginner area, a story-line and PvE quest/mission series. Guild Wars PvP is universal and requires only one chapter to compete with players from any chapter.

What you need to get started:
EITHER - Guild Wars: Prophecies (the original GW)
OR - Guild Wars: factions
OR - Guild Wars: Nightfall (lastest chapter)
Check out the link that Xavier posted for the pros and cons of each chapter.
