yet again it does not take a genius to figure out the trade spam is hindering the social/multiplayer aspect of the game and needs sorting.
caring that much about gw money and spendin hours spammin local chats is whats sad.

I do.....u still see trade spam whatver district u choose.(theres also an example in this thread about a district 3 episode) .
if theres more than 20-30 ppl whoever's got somethin to sell will see an opportunity for a sale and theres a likelihood he will start spammin . (u might be able to start a conversation but be prepared to be interrupted by spam at any time).

again.....I do. what pushed me to complain on a community forum was being interrupted yet again durin a conversation in kodash bazaar! (i have many screenshots of spam in kodash bazar ...wanna have a look? 12 pages of it!)

i had hours upon hours of conversation in wow without ever seein trace of trade spam.( i left the game cos it was just a chatbox with some gfx)
and rule n.1 of software . nothing is impossible. finding solutions to problems is what its all about. Anet probelm solving has been poor......the solutions they came up with were unsuccesful.(and tbh they were bad ideas from the start).

the gw community is not any worse nor any better than any other community....and its ironic how any gw community thread turns into a discussion on trade spam .....yet ppl seem reluctant to address the real problem directly.I have an idea why.

I would like to share my opinion on this topic. Im relatively a new player to GW, I began with Propecies 4 months ago as a casual player after two years of playing Lineage II on L2extreme servers (which has been closed by FBI btw, but thats other story).
And I can tell you there is another effect which should be in mind - when the devs would add something like auction house or similar (maybe some kind of private stores, where you could setup your own store with limited number of items in towns...like on Lineage), we would face the problems with the economics - and be sure this could ruin the entire game - the prices of items would fluctuate due the updates/changes of the game and a new players could find themselfs in a game, where they couldnt buy a simple weapon because of its price.
Game economics could become very unstable and the devs might find a way how to regulate it. As for the Lineage II - there have been problems from the beginning with this.
I dont want to say that I dont want some kind of trading system, I have a lot of things that I want to sell and only possibility how to do that is to spam trade chanel or post it here on guru. I would be very carefull about the choosing the system. Its not so simple as it looks like.
You can disagree on this, but thats my opinion based on previous expiriences with MMORPG economics.

It's the community's fault for causing the trade spam in the first place - lots of impatient people trying to get their message across by typing in both general and trade chat. And please don't say that nothing has been done, Anet have made two attempts to resolve the matter:

1. WTB and WTS as a starter text will automatically show up in spam
2. The insertion of the "search" feature

Try not to counter my arguments, everyone already understands that both of these - though effective as they may be, have done little to resolve the amount of spam.... why? Community got around it, surprise.

No... and I don't think you do either. I'm not too sure how relevant this is to the topic of your thread, but I for one continued to play, along with hundreds of thousands of others, who continued on to play past Kamadan, which, I think had very interesting beginner quests. Noob is such a derogatory term...

Frankly, you're just as likely to be shut down by rude assed people, because there are almost as many as there are Trade Spammers and AFK'ers. But the rest of your argument makes no sense. First you say that you have NO interaction with the community, and then you 'luckily' find a guild, and then you have a random conversation with someone, and then you get trade spam? Where does the 'no' interaction fit in with your argument?

Moving on. Traders have learned enough to know the following guidelines to become a good trader:

1: Trade in major cities,
2: Trade in multiple major cities,
3: Trade multiple times in the Trade chat to make your trade more noticeable,
4: Simultaneously trade in General chat to overcompass your pitch to as many as possible,
5: Use symbols in your text to make it stand out more.

My question to you is this. If the traders have been following these guidelines, where the most important starts from top to bottom - how does a single physical location improve trading, where, in this current state of "trade spam" you can (just as easily) affect more people if you just follow the above? Granted, you can finally have a single place to spam away your wares, but anything that is less effective than its original construction, and that alone wont be enough to kill out trade spam completely.

The community started the trouble because Anet lacked the primal facilities to accomodate the problem that has occured. The current problem now is that regardless of what Anet have done to resolve the matter, it has made no difference at all. I woudn't be surprised if the level of trade spam continued on even when/if Anet decide to open up a TradeHouse in the future - it would be the wasted efforts of Anet for a great feature that people would say that they use, but don't really use it.

They have tried countless things to prevent spamming....

• Filtering messages starting with "<WTB>" and "<WTS>" in the chat window.
• Limiting how many times you can post to the chat window in a set amount of time.
• The part search and trade feature.

Other then those, there isnt alot more you can do. And both of those restrictions got abused, ignored or people found a way round it.

The problem is caused by the mentality of the players not by Anet not trying to solve the issue. They have tried and they cant fix it. The problem will only stop when people learn some manors.

Look at other games like WoW and they have the exact same problems.

You cant restrict what people say in an online game, or you start to alienate people and they feel like their being controlled.

And too many restrictions can have knock on effects.

Lets assume they only allowed you to post one line of text every 2 minutes in the chat window to prevent spamming. That would prevent people having long, indepth conversations.

Lets assume they added more filters to remove certain letter combinations. That would probably stop people typing certain acceptable, because they include filtered text.

Unless you want your liberties completely removed the chat facilities extremely restrictive or taken away, then just accept it. Ignore it. I've been playing for nearly 2 years and the spamming is annoying, but not bad enough that it angers me.

Plus Anet has far more important issues to worry about, other then spamming. Bugs fixes, special events and the development of expansions. Its no small task developing a game, advertising it, testing it, packaging it and selling it.

Spamming is going to take a low priority on that list.

Give them some credit for the large achievements they have made in 2 years, instead of picking at mcuh smaller issues like spamming.


Note: As for suggesting that alot of people quit nightfall due the huge impact of newbies spamming the game. I wasnt aware of this and I certainly didnt notice.

Was this just a nightfall problem? Did I miss some isolated incident?

Spamming in GWs is far worse in factions and prophercies. My god, if people couldnt handle it in NF, then they would be pulling their hair out in LA or Droks.

But get real mate. People dont quit a game just because of spamming issues. If you dont like spamming, then you simple ignore them, or you go to a quieter district or town. You dont go...

"arghhhhh im annoyed, im going to completely quit this game and never play it again"

...and cry like a child (well maybe you do if your a child or you have anger management issues?).

I have to say, I like the market-place atmosphere in Kamadan District 1. View it as a convenience because if you ever need something, someone in Kamadan is bound to have it. Similarly, it’s easy to sell goods. This argument has gone on for about 18 months when Lion’s Arch and Droknar’s Forge became spam-capitals of Tyria and all you can do is accept it. I have never found the need for socializing or chatting in a spam-city. Try Maguuma Stade.

not only theres a lot u can do....but there's also very little u can't do.

but I dont know how would I write a PM to someone when he has 32char long name broken into 3 parts into chatlog/partylog ... thats not the solution. And this wouldnt solve the problem, because there are programs like Perfect Keyboard/Girder with help of these you can make a simple makro that would write the sentences into chatlog - and it isnt so hard to use these programs ...

I'm sure I seen this idea somewhere before but I couldn't find it in Sadelac, the idea was to have a merchant only district. Not auction house, nor trade house but a whole town devoted to trading, all other funtions such as all chat, forming group, etc are disable.

The only 3 things enable are whisper, trade between 2 people option and wtb/wts spam, you go there to trade and nothing else. And you can call it Lion Arch Merchant Dis or whatever.

And the trade options of any kind will be disable in normal Lion Arch, the same goes for any major town.

I'm sure I saw this idea somewhere in guru.

copy and paste would only be disabled in local chat....so u could still copy and paste names elsewhere.
i dont know how practical it would be to use perfect keyboard in gw and how many ppl would bother researchin and using it ....i am sure it would be a bigger disncentive than any measure it has been introduced so far......cos it would make spammin at least require some effort.
this i just an idea (an obvious one) i came up when I opened this thread......there are 1000s of over ideas out there to limit spamming that just require some programming time. (the programmers so far have just taken the lazy route).

email providers did they just wait for people to change their manners in fighting spam? they introduced methods to limit it. its a programmer job.

I think the main diffirence with Nightfall compared to Factions & Prophecies is the fact that Kamadan is both the main traders outpost & the city you start out in.
Sure in Ascalon & Shin Jea there is also a lot of trading going on, but if you want to sell/buy stuff you go to a slightly higher level area: LA or Kaineng.
If you want to sell/buy things in Elona you go to Kamadan.

Now there are lots of ways how you can trade and/or communicate how it was intended to, but that is currently mainly done by the more advanced players, or the not "n00bz" if you will.
Of course a player who never played any GW before and ends up in Kamadan after doing that first easy mission, has no clue how it should be done, besides the "n00b" way. (Changing districts, using the appropriate channels etc)

I think that was also one of the big issues brought up in the first post, but mainly ignored by the rest of the replies;
The spamming, you'll get used to that once you progress in game, but most certainly not if you have absolutely no GW experience and no clue what to do and get dropped in Kamadan D1. Which is indeed a big flaw, it'd be better if Sunspear Sanctuary would be the main trading outpost. Or any other outpost where you must have completed at least some part of the game to reach as a first time player.

Trade spam does kill the community, whether you agree or not. When you've play other MMORPGs that allows you to set up personal stores, its simply unbearable. Turn off trade and local channels? Deal with it? How very helpful, easy for Anet too.

3 bloody campaigns already and coming to an end, want improved storage and trade system? Wait long long time, or go play another game.

They've tried filters and the search function. It's probably going to remain unfixed until GW2. You should find p2p interaction elsewhere besides "Local Chat." Join a bigger guild or post hear more often and build a friends list. As for your statistics: no they don't mean much in the grand scheme, but that in no way justifies or makes up for Mark Twains inability to write or think properly.
