GW2 is a fan-based game. Agree or Disagree
death fuzzy
After reading the stuff on GW2 on the site, Im beginning to think the fans are creating the new games (not that its a bad thing)
Take for example:
playable races?
no level cap?
I know these are just 2 things they mentioned, but what do you think?

Go to our sardelac sanitarium, youll find enough suggestions to make a whole game in there class concepts, game mechanics concepts, minigames, skills, everything.
i wouldnt be surprised at all...
i mean they already got us making weapons for them.......

I think many poeple wanted the ability to transfer into GW2... and they aren't giving us that option (the one I think should be there! rawr.), but mostly everything else, yes.
The don't want to taint GW1.

I'll agree, sure.

Rather than fan based, I would say marketing based. They went for what the masses said they wanted, each time they purchased a copy of WoW rather than GW.

This is really hard to disagree with. Whether they like it or not, Anet is making what most people want in an MMO, and they are doing this because the community has been asking for it.
EDIT:
Without fans, they have no market. So of course, it's both. You can't very well sell a game if nobody likes it.

That'd make it good business, not necessarily a fan driven game. I think GW1 is fan driven. I think GW2 is ANet's answer to WoW. For the most part I think the one thing that will end up hurting current GW players is the high level cap. There are people who are against it, people who don't care, and people who are for it. Amongst the people who are for it, all it will take is a few weeks of being behind the power curve before the forums flood with complaints.
Everything else about the game sounds great.

As for the topic at large, I only mildly agree. It's more like the company is making a game but asking their existing fanbase what would be nice to have. If they were just making it for the fans alone, then GW2 would be little more than yet another chapter to be added on to GW.

Yeah I think it's we had some doing with the features in GW 2. Nothing I said I wanted though, but I don't mind, I'm happy with most if not all of the new features. Anytime something is new, it's usually good with me.
Edge, I play a nasty grinding game. I don't complain on their forums, I just deal with it and don't play it if I'm bored, good suggestions for you all for the future. As long as you buy it..Anet's won. Hahahaha.

Whatever Anet comes up with, I'm with them 110%. Sure, there are people that disagree with what Anet brings up, and some that agree. Thats the way how it is. But know one thing, Anet is trying their very best to cater to all kinds of gamers, from the Hard-core to the Casual.
Me, I'd place myself in the casual/semi-hardcore GW's player category, and I do play games other than GW.
A little change can be good, but sometimes that not always the case as some players will most likely be disappointed. I say, people should give it a chance, give it time, beta won't be coming out until late 08' anyway.

If by "fan-based" you mean "designed to be popular", you're right, of course. NCsoft/ANet are running a business, and GW is a commercial product. They'd be stupid not to design the game in such a way to maximise the popularity of the game, and consequently their sales.
And let me add: I don't see anything wrong about it. I trust that ANet are very much aware that a successful game must have both: Commonly accepted / well known / popular elements of the MMORPG genre (to make it easy for new players to switch), and innovative / new / distinct / unique features for GW. The combination is what makes a good game.

GW2 would be a fan-based game if they let you take your characters over. But thankfully you cant and we will all have to start afresh.
Anet had the sense to realise that if they let players take their characters over, then the entire community would want to control the project to better suit their existing characters.
But since they cant, and its completely under Anets control, they can create a whole new game and aim it at a new audience while still keeping their fan-base.
Anet will do the odd small thing to keep the fan-base around and lure them in, but I expect most of the game will be revamped to take advantage of new technologies and to learn from mistakes made in GW1.

If ANet would allow GW1 players to transfer too much stuff over to GW2 that would give the GW1 veterans a huge headstart, which might scare away some of the new beginners. I know that I'm always reluctant to start playing a game that has been out for a very long time, because I know that I'll probably be owned and belittled by all the l33t veteran players who have been playing the game since day one. I don't like to be a newb, and I don't like to be owned. I prefer to start playing a game when it's new, so that everybody is a newbie just like me.

I can't make an opinion on this yet. I haven't seen the finished product.

I'm already sick of the whining about "they won't let us transfer...", "they're copying WoW", "they don't listen to fans"....
I've read these forums over the past year and now that GW2 is coming out, I'm seeing things that people have asked about for a long time being implemented. How is that "not listening to fans" or "abandoning the true fans" or "trying to steal people from WoW"?
Get over it. They're building a game, that from the glimpses we've had, is built around the major suggestions (no, it's not all of them) that they've gotten from folks, but is still GW. People have been asking for jumping/climbing/swimming and playable races for a long time. I, for one, am glad to see that they're trying to build a richer game experience while maintaining the original vision of GW, which is to provide a fun game that you don't have to pay $150 a year, plus the cost of the game itself.
My point is that it's more than a year away from release, we've only seen a fraction of the plan and there could be a ton more to come, so let's just wait and see.

I'll second that.
People panic and say it's the end of the world and threaten to quit GW everytime a sequel is announced.
and yet the funny part is... they never do.

Of course GW2 is fan-based! Anet admits it. And it's not a bad thing...

At OP? - Huh?
From what I read in the articles, the dev been listening to what the bulk of the players want + all the things they learned as they went along and some of the stuff could not be implemented with gw1.
The Biggest issue was diffusion of all the players across the game vs the "concentration" when everyone was in one game.
I do remember in radio interview with the factions release about wanting to do jumping and 6 months after the original GW launch the idea about races is possible in the future - pre faction / nightfall.
From what I've been reading in the interview GW2 has my intrest and so far it's postive. And they said no monster hoard spawning, loot ganking, etc. vs the OMG GW2 forum with selected info....
I too had the OMG.. this sinking feeling but reading the inteview / gaile's clarifications, that's gone. It's going to be different but from what I read so far, not bad. Still need more information to determine.
