Can't connect in Vista anymore.
Cyclades of Knossos
The latest update has baffled me.
When I turn the game on in Vista, it tells me it doesn't have permission to write to the gw folder.
I've run gw.exe as administrator, and taken ownership and it makes no difference - I can't connect to the server. I'm locked out of the game.
Anyone have any idea what I need to do?

Is User Account Control on or off? I know there was a problem with Adobe Reader 8.0 where you couldn't install it with User Account Control off because it would mess up the permissions for writing to and reading out of the temp directories. Is it possible that your UAC is effecting your writing permissions for the GW folder?

Technical issue, not a game bug. I have moved the thread to the appropriate forum.
Hope you get it figured out.

Oh sorry. Didn't realize I put it in the wrong forum. Thanks for moving it.
Thanks for the UAC advice. tried it both on and off but no luck.
I'm signed is as administrator, btw.
All previous updates worked without a hitch. I'll keep playing with it, but Vista just seems to want to do what it feels like, when it wants. There's no logic to it.

I don't have Guild Wars yet, should arrive tomorrow, but I had a problem like this with STALKER. And I sorted it by doing this:
Go to the location where Guild Wars is installed, normally C:\Program Files and right click on the GW folder and go to properties. You should see a box that has a tick or a square in it called 'Read Only.' Untick it so that there is no tick or square in it, so that its empty.
Now it might work, thats the only advice I can give as I don't have the game :P

Thanks for the tip. Tried it. No luck.
However all is not lost because I finally solved the problem!
I uninstalled GW and reinstalled it again.
Problem gone.
Pain in the backside, but hey, it's a solution.

Oki Im a bit late to the party but that was exactely what I was going to advise you to do.
Maybe it would be in the interest of GWGuru that a general GW vs Vista thread is made and stickied.
Id like to start one but I admit I have NO technical fancypants words to back up what Im saying.
Its basically - New OS system? Back up your photos/etc, format your HDD and start from fresh.

I've had this happen before (in XP); I believe what happens is that something gets messed up in the dat file. The reinstall did it for me, too, and no problems since.

Actually the only program that worked well with my new Vista up grade install was Guild Wars. To any one thinking of upgrading to vista I would say wait, let it mature a bit because right now it just sucks.....

happened to be like 4-5 times and i reinstalled this is on xp

Direct X 10 most likely has a good 7 months to go before its actually needed.
