PVP Help

A noob question about PVP, and please don’t tell me the wiki is my friend or to use search. I’m at work at the moment and cant access the wiki, and I don’t have time to use the search.

I’ve been playing GW for 17 odd months now but (with the exception of the short area between pre and post in Prophecies) I’ve never had a go at PVP. I consider myself pretty experienced player having taken 5 characters through all 3 chapters however I’ve not really got any idea where to start on the PVP front.

I’ve been reading the forums regarding the maturity levels in RA but would like to try and steer clear of this (being in my early 30’s I feel I’m above this) as I don’t want to hear about who did what to whoever and how emo’s all suck and are whatever.

Is there a better place to start my PVP journey or am I destined to join teams full of poorly balances players / skills.

well i was in the same boat you are....AB is a good place to get a taste for PVP although that can have its own grief with it etc... best thing to do tho is play RA until you get your 5 in a row...then u unlock Team Arena's spend some time in there get some friends etc...then when u win atleast 5 total in TA you can move on to HA but i suggest staying in TA until you are more comfortable with PVP...and gain some friends etc....also you can Always GVG with your guild if its into that ....but RA is a good place to test builds etc....and you can always try the International Dists if your home dists are rather hrmmm disappointing...atleast thats where I normally play at.

RA isnt all bad, yah there is n00bs but theres n00bs in GVG'/HA/PVE. i started in HA, chuck a build together that u think works go it a few times if it doesnt work. change it about a bit. u wont aways get a monk in urteam, soemtimes u dont. i ve won 14 on the torot, most flawlwss, even agaisnt 2 monsk teams, with a rit, spirt spammer, ele, sin and warrior. u can try TA but i find that a dead place tbh. HA is nice but pug groups r hard to come buy some times and grinding UW till rank 3 is hard, im still 70 fame away but ur make it eventualy.

Well, just switch all-chat off and you'll be save in RA .

Anyway, it's a good training ground just to start off. The level may not be the best but it will teach you the basics. After that, go to TA or get in a GvG guild to be honest. HA is a good option too, I just don't like it

The times I played RA there were not that many people with bad language.
Sure I've had some flames when my monk did not do what they wanted and we lost, but that's part of the game.
And you can turn of local and team chat if you really want to.
I tend to do TA with people I know, but have had some good times with random teams.
Sure you'll find inbalanced or crap builds, but at the same time you can find teams that are good.
I'd say RA for initial experience and build test, TA with known builds and known people (or teams where the skills strengthen each other).
If you have a guild that does PvP, check them out.
They might want to help you with TA or even invite you in GvG / HA.

As much as I'd like to say just avoid RA forever it is a decent place to go and get a feel for how the skills on a bar work together and how to use them in different cases when you don't have the resources of a large friends list or good guild. If you have these later things, just get to TA/HA and then play with guildies/friends and spend as little time in RA as possible. You'll learn more from getting a chance to play in a more orgnaized fashion with a pre-formed team on TS/Vent then you will on a random group tossed into the fray of RA. If you must RA, turnallchat off, and on occasion when needed teamchat. I'm generally a pretty reasonable and level headed person, but RA can bring out the worst in me sometimes.

Its hard to underemphasize the importantce of the "Guild" part of Guildwars. If you really want to get into PvP you need to have other people to do it with. If you're guild is currently PvE and no one can be convinced to try PvPing with you, then really if you are serious about getting into PvP you're going to be better off going with a PvP guild. It makes life much much easier. I'm not saying you can't just get to HA on your own and build up a contact list by pugging over time, its just the harder way to go imo.

Although RA has kinda childish attitudes, the experienced learned there is invaluable to learning about placement, kiting, using res sigs, and other HA basics.

If you are serious about getting into PvP, you don't have to start at Random Arenas. If you are totally new to the PvP side of GW and don't know anything really about PvP, you can always warm up with Zaishen Challenge and Zaishen Elite. You go against henchie teams and is sort of the first step. Though its not really much of a challenge, you can learn a little bit from it which will carry over. I also suggest that if you have a good guild or know anybody that does quite a bit of PvP, to get a couple of them together and do a guild scrimmage. If you are able, try to get a 4v4 thing going. You will learn a lot that way as well. Its a good way to learn fundamentals, test some builds, get constructive criticism, and get better. If you feel comfortable, you can try RA and/or TA. If in RA, just have fun and do some more learning. In RA, you can't always depend on your team to help you out. It is just the way it is. I think its a good place to also test builds, improve on kiting skills, and more fundamentals. When you get to TA, I would recommend that you do it with friends or guildies for awhile. I would go with a build that you feel comfortable running. This is a good place to work on communication, since that is one of the most important elements to PvP. A lot of teams suceed and fail because of communication. You'll also be able to work together as a team for the first time. I think builds should compliment each other. It's usually not a place a place to test builds. And then finally....if you happen to get to HA and want to do that...I would definitely recommend doing it with friends and guildies. There is the whole "rank discrimination" going on so a lot of PvP players may not let you in their group unless you have a certain rank. Don't let that discourage you though. HA is complex and requires a lot of strategy and thought-out builds. The same also goes for GvG (which I won't get into). Of course you won't be a better play SOLELY by doing this. Doing some research on the metagame, builds, strategies/tactics/know-hows is also just as important. Whenever you get some time, I recommend you take some time to doing plenty of research.


So in a nutshell:

Research -->Guild Scrimmages + Zaishen Challenge --> Zaishen Elite --> Random Arenas ---> Team Arenas --> HA
