Lawby's D/Me solo FoW - Obsidian Shard Magnet
lawby
Hi guys, this is my first guide =)
After doing chest runs a while ago and watching the solo warrior farming FoW i was fascinated by the mechanics of it. Although it worked, it seemed painfully slow, so i decided to create a build that would speedily clear out the beach and the whole spider cave.
Note: I created with guide with experienced players in mind, so elementary knowledge is assumed. (As well as basic FoW knowledge)
I suggest you read this http://gw.gamewikis.org/wiki/Build:W..._Spider_Farmer
before trying my build. (although it is for warrior, the principles are the same)
Skills
1. Physical Resistance
2. Pious Haste
3. Vow of Silence [E]
4. Channeling
5. Mystic Regeneration
6. Mystic Vigor
7. Victorious Sweep
8. Chilling Victory
Attributes
Inspiration Magic: 5
Scythe Mastery: 12
Earth Prayers: 9 + 3 + 1 = 13
Mysticism: 8 + 1
Equipment
Although you can use any equipment, this is what i prefer and recommend.
-Any Dervish armor with 70 armor fitted with full Windwalkers insignia.
- Superior Earth Prayers, 2 runes of attunement and a rune of minor mysticism.
-Zealous Scythe of Enchanting (20%)
-OPTIONAL: some kind of pulling bow
-OPTIONAL: Bring some keys.
The Mechanics/How to use the build
The build is simple, it takes advantage of the Dervish's Scythe to strike 3 foes and simple AoE attacks to deal damage. The main difference in this build is its ability to survive against skales and other annoying spellcasters through the use of Vow of Silence. So when running to the beach, cast Pious Haste and VoS together to make the run there MUCH easier.
Firstly, run to the beach, if you are unsure how to, go back up and read the link i posted. (Remember to use VoS to get past spellcasters, cast Mystic Regeneration if you need some healing)
When you fight Snarling Driftwoods, follow these steps:
1. Put up Physical Resistance, followed by channeling, mystic regeneration, and mystic vigor.
2. When swinging at mobs, ensure that you are always striking 3 foes to maximize energy/hp gain and damage.
3. Spam your scythe attacks till they die.
When fighting dryders:
1. Keep up mystic regen and VoS to protect it from enchantment ripping.
2. Go nuts on it with your scythe.
3. When you feel it has less health than you, it is not necessary to keep enchants up as you can gain health through Victorious Sweep.
REMEMBER: Watch mob patrols carefully, do not bite off more than you can chew.
Once your done with the initial beach area, its time to go to the spider cave. Outside the cave should be 4 dryers. Getting your aggro bubble in range of them will cause Spiders to spawn. Try to pull the dryders out one at a time without getting your bubble near their initial location, and kill them. When the spiders do come down run back out the cave, and carefully pull groups out one at a time. NOTE: A fair few spiders will spawn and come out of the cave entrance. So be careful.
When fighting Spiders:
1. Cast all your enchants (except VoS) and physical resistance. You must have Mystic Regeneration on always to counter the effects of poison from spiders.
2. If the spiders are spread out cleverly move around till they bunch up. I find it difficult to get all 3 together sometimes, so 2 is good enough.
3. Get busy on them with your scythe. (they may use healing spring but this is only their means of prolonging their imminent death.)
When you have cleared the spiders at the mouth of the cave, take out any dryders that you havent already killed.
IMPORTANT: Dryders that reside within the cave will always spawn spiders when you come within aggro range. With this knowledge in mind, deliberately aggro them (with VoS), and run away quickly, then proceed to pull the spiders out.
OPTIONAL: It is possible to kill Shadow Beasts that you might encounter simply by casting enchants followed by VoS. This protects you from the nasty Spiteful Spirit skill.
When youve cleared everything within the limitations of this build, do a happy dance in amongst some friendly shadow warriors or something.
Limitations of this build:
- Pesky spellcasters
- This build can easily take on 2 groups of driftwoods.
- At absolute maximum 2 groups of spiders, and only when they are relatively close together.
- Try to take on no more than 1 dryder at a time, at most 2.
So to Recap:
Make sure that you keep right away from skales at all times. When running through them cast VoS
-Physical Resistance should always be kept up when engaging melee/ranged foes. Same goes to Mystic regen and vigor. Channeling should be cast first to reap the benefits of less energy cost from enchants you cast after it.
-Make sure your hitting 3 foes as much as possible.
-Watch Patrols carefully.
-Be smart, if you know that your enchants have been ripped/interupted and your taking substantial damage, haul your backside out of there and try again. Patience is the key.
Thanks alot i hope to add pics and vids soon.

But can you kill the skales.. That would be nice, so I can pay them back for some bad wa/Me runs
lawby
it may be possible to, but it may be difficult, i dont advise it as there is always a one second window between VoS casts
Blonde Warrior
Looks good, I will have to try this.
no damage tank

yes, but life siphon and life transfer both haver 1 sec or above casting time, so unless they cast as soon as VoS is down, ull be just fine
lawby
its not really necessary to kill them, so i wouldnt jeopardize the run trying to.
Kas
I once developed a similiar build based upon VoS with the Skaales in mind. The one second gap between VoS is not the problem, the real problem with the Skaales is that they do too much damage with normal wand attacks. So while your healing enchantments are up - no problem but once they run out your health starts to quickly drop. So basically it is hit and run, hit and run until you've worn the group down. Possible but time consuming and not worth it (Skaales seldomly drop anything at all).
/edit:
@No Damage Tank:
They also have Grenths Balance which sometimes can get through that one second cast. Luckily they only use it when they're low on HP and during that time, VoS should be up so you can net the kill.

I have been running the same kind of build with VoS on FoW Beach during the free UW and FoW week-end, and it is near impossible to kill the Skales. The problem is that you can take only one at the time, it is quite hard to pack them, and even if you can survive roughly during the fight, their Grenth's Balance is a killer!
I have also tried the Forest with this kind of build and it is doable, and VoS makes the run very handable!

It seems to me that your elite is only used for running is a waste. Especially when the run to the cave can be easily done without VoS.
Why not make the killing faster by using Wounding Strike or Reaper's Sweep?
Still a nice guide, detailed and straight to the point.

With VoS it is much more safer, with my build i can get farming 100% of the time whereas without VoS, a bad spawn can mean the end of a run before it even starts.
Moone
I agree with Anarion, that VoS is pretty much a wasted elite, though the main farm is the spiders in the cave
ps: no risk no fun :P

lawby
well, the way i see it is:
risk = die = waste of 1k = need to pay again to come back = farming flags triggered if die too often = no drops = sad farmer =(

You say your build is made with experienced players in mind, but the way I see it, experienced players should be able to make the run to the cave without VoS. IF you get hit with life transfer by the skales, it's not like you degen to death within seconds. You should be able to break aggro, and then your Mystic Regen + enchants should counter the degen.
I really do think another elite could make the killing faster for this run.

lennymon
just save experimenting with skales until you clear the cave, might get a few gems out of em, never know.
Haggard
Skales drop absolute rubbish. I used to kill them back when Rt/Me could solo the run, and they dropped worse than the dryders.
Evilsod
With the 1 second Rend Enchantments and 1/4 second Grenths Balance... on top of the 0% chance of a shard drop, why bother?
lawby
yes i know that VoS is used mainly for running, but like i said before a bad spawn of skales can kill you (another group of skales hanging near safe spot, initial skales are deeper in the beach than usual). I simply use it VoS make to get there much easier. From what i have observed passing shadow beasts and having SS cast on you can be really disrupt the run, causing you to take excessive damage, VoS eliminates this threat as well. And finally, the build is more than capable of wiping groups with sufficient speed so another damage skill is unnecessary, making the 100% chance of getting there a bonus. maybe its just me but i dont like some stupid skale ruining my run, so i dont like taking chances. Maybe if you guys gave the build a go you would see how safe it is.
Viet Spirit
Nice build thanks for sharing. Now I need to get my Dervish to Gate of Desolation to cap the elite. 1 more quest to go!
lennymon
oh, but wait, this just in, vow of silence is now 1/4s cast (or will be really soon)
drakun01
Which makes this build significantly better (I am not saying it was bad).

cool thats great news ^_^

So, anyone had time to try the Vow Of Silence on Scales?
I read what ppl used to said that they drop rubish... but i want to revenge my warrior. So many deaths because of those bad spawns...
Sadly (or maybe not ), with Easter coming i won't be able to play for a week... So, anyone tried it yet?

i just completed a few more runs with the new .25s VoS and i must say the build is even stronger now. As for the skales i havent tried it yet, will post results as soon as i do. have fun

Its all to necesary. Ever Tried a W/Mo or W/Me and got screwed over by the skales? Try it, if you haven't otherwise, you feel our pain.
lawby
the whole point of this build is to make avoiding the skales easier, ive never tried to kill them and always run past them. seeing as people say they dont drop anything worthwhile dont see why its necessary
lactatemike
After a TON of wasted gold for the entry fee I figured out that with good use of tactics and proper timing a tank with grenth's balance CAN kill the skales. On the other hand, they do consistently drop less valuable items than EVERYTHING else on the run.
Now I'll need to get my derv there, though, to make the spider runs just go by faster.
Thanks for sharing.

Bloodied Blade
The build should work...I had a guildy showing me a similar build a month ago or so. It was fairly successful, but there's a HUGE learning curve (at least on the build I saw, not sure about this one). I tagged along with a 2nd guildy and we 3 manned most of FoW...it was pretty nice.
master of cookies
ive been trying a similar build on my derv (no VoS but Balth instead) but i can never get into the cave, always seems scales get in the way. would someone mind showing me how sometime, i can call driftwoods and dryders on the beach easily but once i get near the cave i cant lure without luring scales!
