Me and a friend were looking for something we could play together online and because he's such a miser we ended up opting for GW. (Seriously guys, most of us probably spend more than the equivalent of a monthly fee each day on lunch)
He stopped playing at lvl8 and it took me 11 characters to slow down

Considering how almost every reply here cites the lack of a monthly fee as an attraction you got to wonder if things would have lasted as far as Factions if there had been one. But that, and what drove me away from GW is for another thread.

-MtG-like skill system
-streaming updates (not Peer to Peer)
-no server "shards" or "worlds"
-server infrastructure
-lore
-art (full 3d)
-music by famed Elder scrolls oblivion guy (Jeremy Soule)
-no skill grind (the skills can be reset by attibutes)
-every class can use any weapon BUT needs investment in the attribute
-max armor --> vanity is the only cost, not max armor
-PvP characters instantly max level/stats
-missions/quests, not smacking mobs 50million times to level

1. I knew it was going to made by people who had left Blizzard. Blizzard has very high quality games so I knew GW would be as well. I was hoping that they had also learned what NOT to do by coming from Blizzard ie: not communitcating with the players at very well, not giving consistent updates, not listening to the community etc.

And I firmly believe that the Anet team has done extremely well at overcoming Blizzards shortcomings in these areas. They DO communicate with us extremely well, they DO give us timely updates (complain all you want about that but its true compared to other games), and they DO listen to the players and many times implement player suggestions. I mean if you really step back and look at the big picture, anet does GW very well indeed.

2. NO monthly fee is still a huge determining factor on my buying ANY new games.

3. I was very sick of playing Diablo 2 and wanted a new world to explore. I tried Titans Quests but it was just another point and click game like D2.

I remember back before Xmas 05, my brother was telling me about this game that had the best looking environment he'd ever seen in a game. So i went to his house and he show's me this game with the beautiful lush green landscape. He was telling about how he was having such trouble killing a bull in a lake. So he fire's up GW's and i was just blown away by the pre-searing ascalon. I'd never encountered an MMO before that and couldnt believe that all those blue dots were other players online, on just one server.

Next day if was off to town to buy my own copy. Looking back its sad to see the state of chat in towns now. Pre-searing ascalon used to be fun to hang around, now its full of little sh1ts talking [email protected], but thats another issue all together.

I liked that you were in a town or outpost with people from all over the world, but when you left you were alone or with a selct group. I refused to play things like WoW or Final Fantasy because you were always surrounded by other players, even though a friend was telling me how much fun it was. So Guild Wars gave me the best of both worlds.

D&D back in the early 80's, Baulders Gate on PS2 around 2000,Then I played anything from Forgotten Realm,FF 10 and FF10 1/2, NWN, civilation 3,Then Guild Wars.I have baught NWN 2 and a few rpgs but none of them are GOOD as GUILD WARS!

I think Blizzard help create the Baulders Gate Serise,so if the same people created Guild Wars, know wonder I love this game.

I'm actually getting sad when thinking about it.
Some mates and me were searching for a new game to play together. GW attracted our attention for several reasons....and most of them are not existant anymore, so are most of my mates in gw.

-No monthly fee (we did not have much cash two years ago)
-a large world with optional addons (that got changed to those wannabe "standalones")
-nice engine and not hardwarehungry
-almost no grind (was the fact until the dozens of "loot rebalances" and anti farming updates hit the game)
-a pve game with a pvp endgame, the game is now divided due to pvpcharacters
-the large creative potential of the game, but actually not much changed due to the "standalone policy"
-a nice ingamecommunity, and that changed also and not in a positive way.
-the possibility to play "alone with NPCs", if we want to or if nobody is available. That got greatly improved with NF but will be trashed with GW2 according to the information available.

The few of us who are left are currently just still playing to stay in contact, as we are now scattered all across the country.

Well I'd been into RPG's on the SNES and Playstation but never bothed with them on the PC. I was more into FPS and the odd strategy game. A couple of friends had been into the GW beta and kept raving about it, so I decided to pick it up a few weeks after release to see what the fuss was about. Having been an avid fan of the Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy series, to name a few, I found the Guild Wars story to be horrid, to say the least. Fortunately, the gameplay and social aspect was appealing enough to make me stick around. I still enjoy playing other games, but it's nice to have a game to fall back on, as there are not many others out there which can give hundreds or even thousands of hours of replay value.
