Anyone getting reduced frame rate post update?
TyrianFury
Hi all
Since the update last night I am suffering a massive drop in frame rate when playing Guild Wars. I used to get between 50-70 fps without any troubled and now I'm lucky to scrape 20. The update has made the game virtually un-playable.
Is anyone else having a similar experience?

nope, but theres like a thin line at the bottom of my screen that constantly flashes all the time. I don't think it's tied to my graphics because I've reduced it to nothing and it was still there :S
People who usually suffer from FPS end up reinstalling GW. I don't know of anything else.

Shader effects went completely moo for me.
After the update they no longer show even though they're activated. Plus the framerate dropped by 40 FPS. It was completely fine before the update... hmm.
/edit:
I wonder if there is some problem with the Shaders that cause such a loss in FPS.

My fps is pretty much as steady as it always has been, but during fighting there are annoyingly often moments when the picture freezes for about a second. Gets a bit annoying when I try to lure and it freezes right after I fire the arrow.
This hasn't been happening to me before the latest update.

I just don't get how this could of happened with the update. Was playing for a few hours yesterday afternoon, apart from dying a DoA a few times the game was running fine. Logged on last night after the update and now the game runs now at a snail pace.
I'm guesssing the audio codecs upgrade my be the cause since I'm using on board sound with the default Vista driver, but all was fine before
All my other games run fine
These are my PC's spec
Windows Vista Business 64-bit

Seems to run better than ever, but also have that flashing line at the bottom of my screen, it's only on title screen and character select though.

my gw is running fantastic today, better than it has ever run before! That line is annoying though. Does the line ever change size for you guys? My line seemed to get thicker. :S
Also my fps is down quite a lot =[

I haven't noticed a drop in framerate, but i HAVE noticed that the game feels a little heavy when moving the camera around, its not as snappy as it used to be
beanerman_99
YES. Last night I was getting horrible lag, stalls and rubberbanding while capping Elites in Shiverpeaks. It lasted about a half and hour then began to run smoother. Not sure if it was just a hiccup or what.
TyrianFury
Tried the latest sound and graphics drivers, still no improvement, re-installing the game. I run the game on max setting and have done so for over a year. When I disable antialiasing the frame rate picks up but as I said I have had it it set to 4x for ages without any problems.

So glad its not just me. Yeh Im getting exactly the same. I used to get 60FPS in fact I was last night, but now this morning and throughout the day im getting 20fps outside and it drops to 13-15 regularly at outposts/cities etc.
Im running Windows Vista with latest updates installed before logging off last night (could be problem)
Amd Athlon 64 X2 3800+
1gb Ram
160gb HDD
Asus Nvidia Geforce 7600GT 256mb
Onboard Realtek high definition audio codec

Still no luck, re-installed guild wars after defragging my HDD and still no joy 13fps oh joy. If I turn off antialiasing I get 60 fps but I used to get this with 4x switched on on both Windows xp and Vista which I have been using with GW since December.
Is this caused by the recent game update or something else as it only started with the game update?

On my machine i've always ran at an average of 15fps, so hearing someone say 20fps is "virtually un-playable" is quite strange

Note that I'm not using onboard audio. This can really make a difference in some games. This certainly sounds like an audio issue to me...seeing as how they've made a major update to the audio engine in the last update it would make sense. Can you guys tell us what type of audio hardware you have, how recently you updated your audio driver, and what OS you're using?

Well, on this machine which is the only one I play GW on, usually, played the game well before the update. Now, though, I seem to be lagging every couple of seconds, and then it's fine again for about 10 seconds, then another lag burst. And sometimes the sound starts sounding echo-y, sounding again and again really quickly. Nothing about my machine has changed...
Squalus the Ipno
same problem here, Vista geforge mobile go 7600GT 256MB.......after update if i enable antialising cannot play.......think problems between graphics driver GW and vista....

As I said had the game on max settings before, 4x antialiasing and no problems until the 05/04/07 update.
I have an ausus nforce 4 sli motherboard with onboard sound, no problems with sound just graphics since the update. Maybe there is now a conflict, I just hope arena net see this thread and can shed light on the matter.
About to do a system restore to see if that fixes my problem.
If anyone else plays on Windows Vista 64 let me know if you have similar issues.
Thanks all

I have tried the command line options to force the old directsond method but this still won't fix the problem.

Is it just me that has noticed that about 3 people are saying they are having the same problem and they all have a 7600 nVidia graphics card? Granted it could be that they all have onboard sound... Interestingly, the AA setting is affecting the frames per second, so it might be graphics related. But then again the audio subsystem was just updated, not the graphics. Thus, it could be hypothesized that there could be a link between the 7600 and the audio update.
Also, I have a X800XT and am running onboard audio with no problems.

Hmm seems to be Vista, my PC runs just fine with XP Media Center and my laptop also has no problem with it. That runs on XP Pro. Both have no screenfreezes or whatever. Just my PCs FPS is 75-90ish depends where I hang out. Laptop is a bit slower with 40-50 and also tends to lag a bit due to my wireless modem I guess. Sound causes no problem anymore, before this last update it was just weird. Sometimes...
I'll try logging at my friends place, hes running Vista with the same specs as my PC, but I'm pretty sure it's a Vista thing. I'm just not in a change hype... Microsoft never gets his stuff right, and I'm not replacing something that's working as a charm.

I have had the same fps drop problem since the update. Used to have 4x antialiasing and highest graphic quality with around 40-50 fps. But now it drops to only 10. The strange thing is only some of my characters experienced this problem. If I log on to my warrior in ascalon city I have no problem at all. But at places like Kaineng city and Sun spear great hall it's a mess.
Try using the -dsound -mute command lines, didn't help. Disabling AA boosts fps to 40s but I simply can't play with those jagged edges.
PC stats:
Compal HGL-30
Core 2 Duo T7200
2 GB Ram
Vista 32 bits Home Premium
Nvidia GeForce Go 7600

Well im still having problems, I have reinstalled my G-card drivers and tried the -dsound but to no avail. -dsound did seem to improve my stuttery sound but my fps was still averaging around 13. This is all very well talking about it. But can we actually find a solution? I think its upto Anet in which case how can we bring it to their attention?
AMD athlon X2 64 3800+
1GB ram
Asus Nvidia Geforce 7600GT 256mb ram
160GB SATA HDD
Realtek onboard high definition audio codec
Windows Vista Home Premium (32-bit) w/ latest updates
Would the problem be solved if I stuffed in my old Soundblaster Audigy SE from my old comp? Thanks for help all
Someone on another forum is experiencing problems with a 7600GT as well. Are Anet actually doing anything about this? It worries me because so many people are fine with only a few having these problems is it enough for them to do summat?

Have you guys tried turning audio completely off? What's the switch again? Is it '-nosound'? That could be a telling test.
This does seem to be hitting Vista users...anyone seeing this in XP? I know that audio on Vista is going through some growing pains right now, but the antialiasing thing is throwing me off. Perhaps there is more than one issue here. Anyone care to sound off on the -nosound and Vista/XP issues so we can start a process of elimination?
Like I said, I'm seeing a slight decrease in performance, but nothing all that disrupting, so it's not a universal problem...I'm going to go see what happens when I turn off AA...

I have had still no joy with the -dsound and other mixes as suggested by Gail Gray. I really would like to know the cause of this and I hope arena net fix it soon. I really do not fancy paying £60.00 for a new soundcard.
It is strange about the graphics issue with anti-aliasing been the culprit. But like someone said the audio engine was updated and not the graphics. Besides the Gerforce 7600 gt 256 is a decent mid-range card that used to cope with 4x anti-aliasing no problem prior to the update.

I've contact Anet about this problem, and to my surprise, their reply was just as I expected...

Thank you for contacting Guild Wars Technical Support. Unfortunately, Windows Vista is not a supported operating system for Guild Wars. The only supported operating systems are Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows 98, and Windows ME. You might be able to play without any problems, but we cannot be sure how the game will work on an unsupported OS. This may change in the near future. You can look on the community boards and update notes for announcements when that will happen. You would need to switch to a supported OS for us to assist you with this issue. Please let us know if you have any further questions. Thank you, Guild Wars Technical Support |

Well I have run out of options, I have returned my pc to several restore points, re-installed GW 3 times, new and old drivers, even installed a new sound card which I borrowed (Sound Blaster Augidy 2) and still no luck.
I have disabled Vista aero desktop and tried all the command line codes to alter the sound mixer.
From what I have tried I can only see that the recent GW update has broken compatibility with windows vista as it was fine before. Everyone else with this issue seem to have nvidia cards and vista. AA cant be used without a massive decrease in preformance.
I know vista is not a supported OS but wasnt the update meant to make the game more compatible because of vista's audio architecture? What do buyers of new PCs do now since 95% of now ship with Vista.
If it isn't broken don't fix it ..............please anet can you take a look at this

My Framerate hasn't really been reduced, but my client has suddenly started to hog all my CPU processing space. Windows Task manager etc. are all showing the GW client taking anywhere from 80-100% of my total CPU usage. And when it reaches 100%, GW just freezes for a few seconds at a time... making most of the game extremely unplayable. I'm going to try reinstalling the client today, so let's see what happens...

In fact, in the last 10 minutes the problem has gotten worse than ever. GW is now completely unplayable for me, it spends more time stalling than running.
The only thing I've noticed, that I havn't seen mentioned here, is that it only seems to happen in combat areas.

Let's face it, something in the update went very wrong, and the only thing that will fix it is a patch from Anet.

I had my FPS increase by setting my graphics card for Application Controlled for AA and AF. Of course everything is maxed in the game, video wise...

I am still not seeing these issues, I have an ac 97 codec on my laptop and an nforce codec on my desktop. No issues with video either. I am running xp hom sp2 and media center roll up 2. If this is affecting primarily vista users, the problem may revolve around the fact that vista shipped with DX 10 and not 9. The engine and its associated modifications revolve around DX 9. I can only imagine how DX 10 works in association with hardware that by a majority is only able to be run in a compatibility mode by the Direct X 10 system.
Remember that most of the hardware that is available is not designed to directly interface with DX 10. The majority of available hardware is still only DX9 compliant.
