Objects flickering at distance post update
Vel
I am noticing this after installing the whole update with -image option. The objects flicker and then when I adjust the camera, they become alright again. Mostly happens if I turn around quick and settles after the move the mouse to change camera. Also noticing hall of mirrors (HOM) effect in several areas with brown surfaces, like walls. Piken walls are changing colors as well.
I have ruled out video card as I have tried with differnt sets of cards 2x6600GTs. Same issue. Reinstalled drivers and directx..still have same issue. However, I don't have any problems in playing LOTR Online or Half Life2. So, I am wondering if this is somethign to do with new update and SLi? I am wondering if this is caused by triple-buffering in game engine.
Anyone noticing or facing such issues. Any idea how to fix them?

I've experienced similar issues, GeForce 6600GT, single card...so I don't think it's SLI related. Example: At a specific camera angle and specific distance, a Nightfall "gate" effect will show through rocks obscuring it...among other minor glitches.
If it's related to the other glitches (the flickering sliver of the taskbar or desktop on the edge(s) ), then I'd wager it's an issue with Nvidia drivers that the latest update introduced.

Made a Video of the problem...I am ABSOLUTELY sure that it has nothing to do with my graphics card as I have faced this with my SLI setup with 2x7900GTs and also with 2x 6600GTs. And absolutely no problems of artifacts or any other issues with other games with either cards.
I have independently tested each card and problem persisted. So, it is nothing to do with SLi.
Here's a link to the video showing the problem...

Any ideas...?

Funny thing for me is that the update fixed my flickering objects in the distance problem.
Has to do with z-buffering I believe. Before the update, whenever I stood outside Shing Jea Monastery and looked out to the distant mountains and buildings in the distance, the trees and buildings would flicker in and out like my perspective was changing a lot.
I now, no longer have this problem. So, something was changed that made an improvement for me and a detriment for others.

I two am having this problem running with 2 eVGA GeForce 7600GS each with 512mb of ram. I'm noticing a pattern in this thread, people with ATI cards are not having problems now and those with nVidia cards are.

I still get the flicker at a distance now and then, but it's not as pronounced as it was before the recent updates.

It never happened before w/ my setup. now, it is just impossible to deal with. Can you all please open bug reports with NCSoft so they notice and take care of this problem?

I'm not sure where this was posted, but I found it in another thread on these forums. This is the DirectX Runtime updates for April 2007.
After installation I noticed not as many places were flickering as before. Others might want to try and see if they have any luck at reducing the flickering... hopefully this gets fixed soon.
Side note... After installing the new runtime updates I have noticed increased frame rate. Mainly in explorable areas, where there aren't as many people running around, but the increased performance is there.

I've run into the same problem as well in FoW, Pongmei Valley, and Piken Square. It will be fine when entering the zone, but as I spend more time in a zone the flickering becomes worse.
I've also found that some of the objects that flicker seem to take on different models. An example would be the trees and plants in Pongmei Valley. After I get far enough away to trigger the flickering, all of the trees turn into Mursaat Portals and sometimes Canthan buildings.
I'm on an nVidia 7800 GT 256MB SLI setup.

I have exactly the same flickering/transforming with distanced objects, not just in towns and outposts but throughout the whole game.
I have a 7950gx2 running latest nvidia drivers on windows x64, and pre-update have never had any issues. Now its just irritating-plus my frame rate has dropped from 60+ to mid 40 and below.
I have also tested it on another machine running windows xp pro and a geforce 5200 (again nvidia) with no flickering, but very frequent choppy framerate lag when turning camera-no problems on that machine either pre-update.
Please fix ANET!

I have the exact same problem. My machine: Athlon 64 3500+ / 2 GB Ram / nVidia 6800 GT x2 in SLi / running the most recent nVidia drivers (Forceware 93.71)
Never had an issue before the April 5th update and it's driving me insane. As I move my character closer to the point where distant objects (like buildings) go from the 2D drawing to a 3D model (hard to explain... hopefully that makes sense to you guys), the flickering will stop for that particular building.
Help! Or Fix! Or both!

I'm currently having the exact same issue as everyone else, I will apply the April DirectX Redist to see if it helps me. Running Guild wars on an A64 x2 4400+ and dual 7900 GT's.

Funny enough, I had this flickering distance problems for ages, about 7-8 months. I used to it now lol. Nothing I do will get rid of it, so I just kinda live with it. I think the problem started when I switch to SLI, can't be certain but my girlfriend's pc with single card never have this problem.
I'm running geforce 7900 gtx SLI, 2 cards never have that much impact in games. But I need them for rendering in Premiere and Directors, Illustrator seem to work a lot faster with 2 cards as well.

Same problem WITH Ati x600.

I run with SLi (as you'll see in my post above, I have the same issue as you guys), but even disabled (and running off of one card) I get the same graphical glitch. I've been in touch with NCSoft's tech support (as Vel in Post#9 suggested) and though they weren't able to address the issue, they were certainly apologetic and informed me that they plan to work on it to be patched.
My suggestion to all of you experiencing this: use Vel's link (link here) to submit a report/question to their technical support. The more people they know are having this problem, the more likely it'll get fixed in a timely fashion.

Same issue here, SLIed 7900GTOs.
Have a friend who's getting it too.
By the way, I found that rolling back to the 91.47 drivers got rid of it. I'm currently running 93.71s again though.

Here are some observations w/ 93.71 drivers:
1. Single GPU >>> Less Flickering. Almost none.
2. Windowed mode with SLi >> Zero flickering.
What has become quite apparent now is that for some reason with the updates SLi facility is causing issues. There is NO benefit of using SLi on GW as it does not take any advantage at all. At least that's what my observation is.

Weird... I'll have to try it windowed tonight and see how it does. However, when I disable SLi I still have flicker. Whether or not it was less of a problem, I didn't notice.

Guys-update EVERYTHING including bios.
That should help.
Try messing with your cards options also to see what happens.
Im running on a 3ghz P4 with HT and a Ati 9600XT and I get 40+FPS easy.Without graphic problems.

Same problem - but with 8800GTX SLI. I am convinced it's the latest forceware though - the flickering started when I updated that, not when GW last updated.

But, flickering galore and its so annoying!!
- Vel

I've been using the Forceware driver that was released in November of 2006 (I installed it in January after the Wintersday events). From that time until April, I never experienced a single flickering problem that we're all describing. I hadn't changed anything on the system and then suddenly, now I'm experiencing it and have been since the beginning of April. The only significant change to either my system or to the game in that time period (from January until now) has really only been the April 5th update. I'm getting used to it after seeing it for two weeks, but it's annoying.

I also have an annoying issue where objects on the screen are blocky and blury until I get VERY close to them. I have 2 Geforce 7800 GT's running SLI mode, an AMD X2 CPU, 2 gig DDR2 ram all running on a M2N32-SLI Deluxe board. I have the graphic options maxxed out. This is annoying when playing the game, I hope Anet or Nvidia comes up with a fix soon!!!!!

Both my SLI desktop and my single GPU laptop are having flickering issues recently.

I kinda fixed mine a little. I brought the PC outside and cleaned the dust out. With the dust gone and better cooling able to reach the cpu and the gpu my flickering is gone. I still have the issue of world objects being all fuzzy, then just popping up in full graphic detail. To me it's an LOD issue that Anet needs to adress and not a hardware issue with my PC. I run Oblivion on this PC as well and i have the graphics on Max settings with HDR and I don't get any objects popping up and that's what leads me to think it's a GW issue with LOD and how it handles it.
Vel
It is quite annoying that ANET support keeps telling me ...do that do this and it is quite clear that they are throwing stones in the dark. They have no clue what they did to mess it up for NVIDIA users. However, what's really annoying is that they want ME to troubleshoot the problem for them. I am the end user. I patiently waited and followed their directions for over 12 days now; quite pointless actually. If it were a problem with only my PC oe my setup I would have done all the troubleshooting I needed to do but, it is quite clear it is a problem with NVIDIA cards running DirectX v9.0c. in SLi or not in SLi. I gave them the link to this thread also. But, all in vain. ANET support should go buy a couple cards (if you don't have them...well duh!) and try out instead of telling me to troubleshoot for you. WTH really!
At any rate, cleaning the GPU will be a good idea.

My Flickering is back!!!! >.< I think my next step is to remove my vid drivers and try different versions until I find one that works. Anyone know how many versions back we can go before SLI is not supported?? Current version is 93.71 and was released Nov 2 2006.

I believe this is definitely an anti-aliasing problem. I've come to the conclusion if I set my "SLI rendering mode" to "SLI Anti-aliasing" the flicker is gone. The only problem is I take a big hit in performance, down about 20fps from my usually 50 to 60. But still, 30fps fluid motion is better than the flickering any day!

OK, I hate to throw a monkey wrench into your chatting, but I and my wife both have the same issue. I use a Geforce 6800GT (256mb) while she used a Geforce 6200OC (256mb). We have the flickering, the strange objects that transmute them selves into trees or what ever as you get closer. We both have Althon 64 3200+ procs on a GA-K8U-939 (AGP only). We are both using video driver version: 81.98 as it has always performed the best for the 6xxx series cards.
Lastly, like you it started after the April 5th update.

But it has to be an anti-aliasing problem. Given that people in different threads on different boards have said that it goes away when you switch the AA levels and I can assure that when set to "SLI Anti-aliasing" the problem is gone. A.net needs to look at anti-aliasing in regards to this problem.

Update - Wednesday April 18
* Enabled the Russian language option.
* Fixed a performance issue with anti-aliasing on nVidia cards and Windows Vista.
However, that did not fix anything. Also, I wonder why post April 18th Update I don't see the SLi load balancing bar anymore even when it is enabled in NVIDIA Control Panel. Anyone knows?

As the update messed up AA, SLI owners are sorta left with 2 choices SLi8 or SLi16. SLi16 is an overkill with a HUGE performance drop.
