i was questing outside of shing jae monastery when i noticed a NPC named Mei Ling. For anybody who doesn't know who mei ling is, she's a character from metal gear solid and metal gear 2.

OMJG, there's a Armor Crafter in Kaineng Center named Kakumei, THAT MUST RESEMBLE THE GURU POSTE, BECAUSE ORIENTAL NAMES ARE NOT UNIQUE!!!!

Sigh.

i must be unique because...
1. I'm not an asshole (least when nobody else is one)
2. I'm not an expert on oriental names.
3. I can spell the word "Post"
4. My caps lock isn't broken, and I don't leave it on.
edit: thank you Avarre

Wow!!! Give the guy a break. He found something he thought was cool and wanted to share it. Yes Cantha is oriental, Yes Mei Ling is a common name but jeese... Let him have his moment of Zen and say thank you for sharing... no need to bash the poor guy.
Not saying he is a "Noob" but the one thing I hate in this game worse than "noobs" is the "experts" who belittle others. Get off the computer for a bit and go take a walk. (and not to your local comic book store)

It's pretty fun to see where they get the names from for their NPC's..
Several (if not all?) of Akira Kurosawa's "The 7 Samurai" (#10 on IMDB movie top 250) samurai's can be found through out Cantha

I didn't play the game much, don't have the patience to watch all those movies. But is she the one who says: "I cant believe i am being complemented by the famous solid snake", or am i mixing things up?

She's the one you talk with to save your game over the Codec.

That name could be a reference to metal gear as there are a lot of references to movies, other games etc. in GW. A good example is the boss Enadiz the Hard Headed. Enadiz reads Zidane backwards so the reference is kinda obvious form there. This might not be a reference to metal gear solid too. No way to know for sure.

TO continue Zinger's talk about kakumei (Revolution for those who dont know) : I also found that a skill trainer named, i think, Okane (money) and a guy in maatu keep(sp?) just at the frontier of Kaineng (the city-state, not the game-wise capital) with an actual word as name, can't remember what unfortunately.
And No, it'S probably intended. Yes some of them may be accident but they probably not made up every single name, they have an entire world to fill with esater eggs. And if you ask me, kakumei seems too long and doesn't sound classic enough to be made out of pure luck.

Quite an exaggeration wouldn't you say?
It's almost like saying half the people in America have the name John (or whatever).

It's a common exaggeration, we all know he didn't mean it litterally, but just to stress it's a common name.
But while we're at it, I'm sure people would appreciate any explanations of the names of the game's NPCs. There are sure to be tons of in-jokes that the westerners fail to see.

every thing in GW has its place on Guild Wars Wiki... and if something will have somekind of previous reference... they WILL say what the reference is... for instance... ALOT of bosses are references to Dungeons and Dragons and/or Diablo....

I agree that the majority of NPC and boss names allude to real-life characters and people. Some of them seem like they could reference several different characters (i.e. Mei Ling was also the girl "with green eyes" from Big Trouble in Little China).
