[Problem] The Chat Comes Back Onscreen When You Zone

(Sorry - no pics, but I'm sure you all know what I'm talking about.)

Is this a bug or an intended feature of the new update?

Since the update a few days ago, whenever you zone into a new area your recent chatlog comes back onscreen. Even if it's chat that was given minutes ago (and since faded out into your 'log'), it still reappears if it fits into your chat window once you zone. This is pretty annoying, especially in some PvE areas where mobs are right outside the door. Extra text in my face, for seemingly no reason at all. If it's in my log, I can just scroll up in my chat window to read whatever I need. Please don't make it reappear like this. Some of us have extended the chat window and it gets very distracting, especially when we have to fight/avoid those right-outside-the-portal mobs.

I like it, and the majority of my alliance does too. It's a convenient way of seeing messages you missed while zoning.

^Uh.. i don't think you get msgs when you're in the middle of zoning still, that is still an issue (i can test it even..), It's rather an annoyance.. and if it is intended then it looks pretty sloppy, I hope It's changed back.

What, you can't take a few messages on your screen when you load? Your saying that because of a few sentences, you can't attack the monsters near you. Seems pretty sad to me. Seriously, how's it stopping you?

Like Brianna said, you don't get messages while in the middle of zoning.
They probably just aren't seeing them while the have the map open to pick where to zone or the loading screen hasn't fully went away.

I found it annoying. My chat box takes up a good portion on my left side of the screen. If I wanted to reread something I could simply open the window and scroll up.

If you don't like your chatbox why does it take up a good portion of your screen? Make it smaller then...

At the "no messages when zoning" thing...Sometimes when zoning it can take a while for the map to load in which one can see the world, but not their character and can't move. During that time messages are received (and this I know for a fact as it happens often to me).

I honestly don't get the big deal. You say that those few sentences hinder you in battle, so do you turn off chat during battle? If not, what's the difference between those few messages and the ones received during battle? If you turn your chat off during battle, why not turn it off just before you zone? (considering that fact that you say you get no messages during the loading process..)

It's definitely a help to me...I don't get the big deal about a few messages on your screen when you load onto a map...wtf?

I have my chat window expanded for when I'm buying/selling in town. It's very helpful in the big spamming districts.

For all you people who are in disbelief that I can't stand having the chat thrown back in my face every time i zone into an area:

Why can't you stand to just scroll up in your chat window and read the text that you missed manually?

ANet doesn't need to force the issue on us. When I'm in town I read everything that's put in chat anyways. Please revert this back to the way it was, or give us an option to choose. I don't want the chat to come back when I zone into an exploreable area. This isn't new chat that got posted while I was in the process of zoning. Often times - ie. in the slower-spamming towns - it's very old snippets of chat text (minutes old!) that I don't need to see anymore... thrown back into my face for no reason at all. This isn't a few lines either. Because I have my chat window extended for the buying/selling, I get almost my whole left side of the screen's worth of messages re-spammed.

The difference between old chat messages and new ones is just that. I don't want to have to keep looking at the same ones every single time I load somewhere. If I want to see all the messages I'd just leave my chat window open. I don't see it as a hinderance so much as just pretty damn annoying.

And yeah, you can get whispers while you're loading. I have no problem with that. Is handy, especially when you're a trader.
Honestly, who gets the same volume of whispers as they do in local/guild/team/alliance?

This is a fine example of ignorance in the Guild Wars community.

I'm a trader and a farmer. I need that much chat log open. Like any farmer, I zone a lot, having old chat logs appear every time I zone becomes rather annoying. I can make the chatbox smaller, but I am a trader also, I need that much of the chatbox because when people are spamming, I don't like scrolling on the default 3-4 (I forget) lined box.

Well you can say, I can switch the box small when I'm farming and open switch it larger when I'm trading? That's quite a hassle, and they way they had it before all the GUI updates worked perfect, I don't know why they changed it without consideration of the minor community that took advantage of it.

First thing I looked for was a new checkbox in the main options screen... oh well. I'm hoping they either revert it (doubtful) or add the option to have it the way it was (possible).

I've had a similar problem, and addressed it with my alliance, who took it 50/50, which sort of seems to be the general consensus around here. And as a farmer and trader myself, seeing "Mountain Troll dropped a Mountain Troll Tusk." and "You pick up the Mountain Troll Tusk." a few dozen times after every single zone, even with all of my chat closed, gets darned annoying. Please ANet, revert it to the old method, since then you could at least open and close your chat box whenever you needed, as oppossed to being forced to see old messages.

Tell you what then, hang out somewhere until there is just some jerk cussing out other people in all chat, then zone out. Do you like having to read that idiot's chat again, and again, and again? If you do, then you must act just like that kinda jerk. Me, I don't want to read it the 1st time, let along everytime I zone. I also tend to stay in International districts to minimize lag so I can see that same chat literally hours later. It's not fun.

That chat log popping up after you zone got someone a free trip to the Ruins of Sermia. When I saw the request, I zoned back in for him.

I hardly find it to be annoying or a bad thing.

Firstly, personally insulting someone over their opinion reflects your personality, and leads to suggest that you may in fact be the "jerk" you are describing.

I don't experience "jerks cussing out other people in all chat" very often, and if I do I simply block the user. If their words are of such annoyance to you that seeing them for a second time would be worse than standing in a meteor shower then I honestly don't see why you don't block them.

Your statement also doesn't make sense, because you are suggesting that because you stay in International Districts, you don't see many messages in local chat, and as a result can see old messages "literally hours later." You also suggest, though, that you experience people spamming insults in local chat and that you don't want to see their messages. In summary, you are saying that you don't get messages in local chat but very often people are insulting others in that same chat. That doesn't make sense at all...

It's not as if the refreshed messages stay on screen forever. They fade out after a few seconds. For someone with the entire left-hand side of the screen covered in chat I can understand...but I'm sure the majority of us don't have such a large chat window.

If you don't get messages while zoning and your chat doesn't cover your entire screen, why even look at the chat box in the first place?

That's definately not true. I load slowly sometimes (30-45 seconds a map) and while half way through the load screen, I'll hear that familar *ding* sound. When I'm done zoning, a new PM will have reached me.

^ Ahem. i run 2 Games at once almost all the time, and heres a prime example of what happens: My Main account is sitting in my guild hall lets say, and my guild is chatting their heads off about random stuff, and i go to my other game to Map into Lions arch, and i read what they are saying on that second game and notice that some msgs seem out of place or random, Then i go back to look at my main account which is still idle and notice that i had missed a grip load of msgs while i had been zoning on my second account, i can even prove it.. if that is utterly necessary, but i would not lie about something such as this, it is indeed a problem, and i can to vouch for the fact that i hear Dings while zoning and when i load, i haven't gotten any msgs.Even sometimes i am talking to friends and i go to map to a different town, and by the time i zone they are talking about something else.. after lets say i asked them a question, this is because i missed their previous messages while zoning. And as for the chat log.. It was fine as it was before, like it had always been, the msgs reappearing after zoning even when you have your chat log down is a very big annoyance.. as exclaimed by the *majority* of the people in this thread.

You definitely DO get messages while zoning. I can think of twice when this has happened.

The first time I ever played Guild Wars, I had to download tons of files when entering Ascalon City. During this LONG process, I heard a ding, which I later found to be my friend.

Just during the last update, I was downloading the files when entering a map and I got the ding sound. Ten minutes later the files were done (10Kbps FTL) and I got to read the message. During that time though, the person who messaged my in-game asked me why I wasn't replying via Xfire. So that's all the proof you need that you can at least get PMs while zoning.

Yes, I found its an update. But I rather like it, since so often many people type an important message while I'm zoning, and when I fully load people are talking about else.

Also, I can't really tell but has anyone noticed different about the actual text? If you press the " ` " key (default) it brings up a scroll-able veresion of chat, and the text in that looks sharper somehow. Maybe it's the black outline around each letter? (Haven't noticed before)

I find it annoying....
character appears in say LA....does NOT have chat log up....runs out (or maps out) the chat log appears....runs to another gate, chat log appears again even though have never had it open.....I have it closed for a reason, I reallly DONT care about the chatting in towns usually so WHY should I have to see it again when I leave? (it also reshows what ever dropped again and that you picked it up, I dont need to see that all again and again).

Uh, if you read the very next post that I posted (#10) you'd see that I said getting whispers while loading is possible.
