Recently after the update that helped fix the cast animations of most elites and maybe even more, sounds stopped playing entirely from my character. This includes sound when taking hits, hexes cast on me, enchantments, and pretty much anything that involves sounds which involves sound.
Sounds still play normally when spells are cast by my heroes.
Anyone experiencing the same?

As for me, I have not experianced this anomaly. I'll try using some of my others skills to see if anything wierd pops up.

I feel utterly strange playing in mute mode (hard mode feature? ) It can't be my sound device cos everything plays fine: music, other sounds in GW, EVERYTHING.... but this.

That's quite odd. I've not had that problem, as far as I've noticed. Admittedly I'm not always the most observant though.
Now I'm going to have to check it out to make sure.

I usually have my music up so high I can't hear any of the sounds anyways (My RAs drop by every now and then and tell me to get a life and turn down my music at 4am in the morning after throwing bread at my face), but this feature would be both a blessing and a curse! No more Miniature Troll sounds when you have a party member who just won't stick it back in his inventory during a mission! Brilliant!

I'm one to talk, though, with my Kuunavang.

To the OP: Have you tried using the different audio switches now available? See if one of these command line switches changes your problem to any degree.
Command-line Options:
-sndasio : attempts to use an ASIO driver in software mode
-sndwinmm: attempts to use the Windows Multimedia audio driver in software mode
-dsound : forces use of old DirectSound software mixer.
Example: "C:\Program Files\Guild Wars\Gw.exe" -dsound
