Trained assists and zergs made quick work of any target, squishy or otherwise. This is where Guild Wars deviates from that old standard, which in my opinion is a good thing.
The idea had finally came of age, "Hey, people don't like dying in the blink of an eye all the time, without even having a chance...let's tone down the power of everything, drop the idea of mass crowd control, shorten the durations of effects/conditions and make a combat system that is built with checks and balances as a central governing philosophy..." yada yada...
So, Guild Wars style PvP was born, it may have flaws but it appears to me that fights aren't routinely over in 30 seconds.
I do wish the numbers of participants on the battle field were larger.
