Health and Magic points question!!
Bain_Belar
Hi All,
I'm new to the board. I have a question concerning GW Prophecy edition. I searched the board before I posted this. I hope this is the right area to post this!
When I'm doing a quest and my character - party dies, I understand that you loose health and magic points(and xp to?). But, as you redo the quest you gain them back eventually. Depending where your xp are(eg: close to leveling up), health and magic points may increase above what you originally had.
Here's the problem, situation and or difficulty I'm having. Let's say I finish my Northern Wall quest. My character - party has died but, I've regained my health and magic points and even have more of those then when I started. The game goes to another quest and I loose all of those health and magic points that I had earned. The game goes back to what health and magic points I had before I completed the Northern Wall quest(which is lower than what I earned). Is this a bug? If so, is there a patch for it?
Sincerely,
Bain

It's the way the game is designed, this is an effect that does not happen in pre-searing ascalon, but everywhere else in the game, when you die, you get a "death penalty", which reduces your health and magic by increments of 15% for each death, with a maximum of 60% (note, exp is remained untouched). You can find your current death penalty (often called DP for short) at the top left of the screen. The way to work off DP is to either go into a town, or to fight and kill monsters. I forget the exact amount of exp needed to remove 1% of DP, but I don't remember it being too terribly high.
Another effect you witnessed is something called a morale boost, which actually increases your health and magic by 2% increments (with a 10% maximum). This can be gotten in some missions by destroying a specific target, or in any area by killing a mob boss (the enemies with the colored auras). This effect is also reset when entering a town.
So in short, it's a feature, not a bug

Most people call it dp and morale. Dp (death penalty) lowers health and energy if you have been killed. It lowers by 15% at a time (max 60%). Once you enter an outpost or city your dp and morale will go away. Morale you gain after you kill a boss or do something else you gain a 2% morale boost (max 10%). YOu lose 0 exp.
Etta
It's not a bug, when you get kill you will receive a death panalty (Dp) which lower your total % of HP & enegry. Kill once = -15% dp, twice = -30%dp and so on max dp is -60%. You can get rid of it by killing enermies, zone into towns, use a certain items.
As for the bonus Hp & energy, that's call moral boost,+2% on the top left hand of the screen. Max moral you can have is +10% to your total Hp & Mp.
You gain them by, killing a monster bosses (color enermy), finish certain objective in the mission, and those bonus like its counterpart will be lost when you enter a town or outpost.
edit: lol 2 posts before me already! nvm

I think you may be missing what I'm intending(no offense intended). Let's say I regain my DP and got a morale boost of 6% but, haven't leveled up and I finished my quest. Then the game takes me to my next mission - quest and I loose all of the 6% morale boost back to where I was before I finished the quest. Does that help clarify what I'm asking?

Hi Bain,
When you are doing a quest and you're character dies, you incur what is know as death penalty (DP) which reduces your maximum Health and Energy by 15% for each time you have died to a maximum of 60% --if you die twice in rapid succession, however, this does not count toward DP. You do not lose XP for dying. Any death penalty you incur can be "worked off" by killing monsters, completing quests or zoning to a town or outpost.
The opposite of a death penalty is a Morale Boost (MB) which, like DP, is a temporary effect you most often get for completing mission goals or killing a boss monster. Morale boost is capped at 10% bonus to maximum Health and Energy. This most likely explains your having more health and energy in the mission and then losing this health and energy in town.
An Example (Hypothetical):
I am level 20 (so cant gain more levels). I have 100 health and 100 Energy. I die once, incurring a 15% DP, bringing my Health and Energy to 85. I then complete a quest, removing all my death penalty -my health and energy is now 100. I find a boss and kill him, giving me a 2% morale boost, bringing my health and energy to 102.
I zone into a town and my health and energy go back to their normal levels - 100 each.
Hope that helps.

Ok first, it's called energy, not magic.
What happens with the death penalty is that you lose some points in health and energy but I'm pretty sure you don't lose exp points. As you kill bosses, you gain back the points you lost and your dp decreases. When you zone back into a town, the dp goes away entirely. If you zone to another area, it doesn't.
If you have no dp, and you kill a boss, you gain some extra health and energy but only while you are doing that mission/quest. Zoning in to town or another area, same effect as dp.
So you gain permanet health/energy by gaining exp and temporary for killing bosses, which go away when you zone in to a town.
One more thing. Anet fixes and downloads automatically any error's or bugs.
Hope this answers your question.

the thing is, I've lvl-ed up 2 lvls and my energy pts still remain the same no increase(and yeah I use my prayers etc)but, my Health pts increase
moriz
that's normal. energy does not increase, and you'll gain 20 hp every time you level up.
1 up and 2 down
That is because energy doesn't increase when you lvl, only health. To get higher energy get weapons that give better energy bonuses or get runes of attunement and attach them to your armor. Also later in the game you should be able to get a certain armor type that gives energy bonuses.

Thank You all for your input. This has helped me better understand the game!

To the OP: If you want to increase your energy pool you will need to either use runes or upgrade your equipped items to types that have an inherent energy bonus.
Also: Elementalists can increase their energy pool via their Primary Attribute of Energy Storage.
Also, don't forget to spend/distribute your attribute points that you gain when you level up.

All characters have an innate energy capacity of 20. This doesn't change based on level, but can be increased via certain armor pieces, weapons, weapon upgrades, or in the case of Elementalists, increasing the Energy Storage attribute. All standard Warrior armor provides no modifier to maximum energy (with the exception of Gladiator's Armor), while all Ranger armor sets provide +5 maximum energy, (with the exception of Druid's Armor, which provides +12). Most sets of spell caster armor provide +10 maximum energy (with the exception of Ascetic's Armor, Enchanter's Armor, and Scar Pattern Armor, each providing +17 energy). source |
