Answer: No, bad idea! Here's why: Drops are determined by, let's call it "active party size." Your active party size is determined by presence in the "area of interest" or, for simplicity, the enlarged aggro bubble. So a monster isn't going to say "Hey, back there at the entrance, this Ele has 7 other friends, I shall therefore drop a generous drop appropriate for an 8-member party!" No, the monster is going to say, "What is this guy nuts, trying to solo me?" No, seriously, the monster is going to say "Huh, one guy, my loot is therefore appropriate for a one-person party." And he will drop a smaller reward based on that assessment.
The problem--the "gotcha" is--all the gold that the monsters drop will be split between the full 8-member party, even if the other 7 Henchies and Heroes are off having a picnic with the Res Shrine Priest and aren't lifting a finger in battle.
So while it's creative to think of staking non-combatant party members outside the combat zone, you're only shooting yourself in the foot.

Oh, so even when they're off map they still get drops...wow, ANet really knows how to nerf stuff. Oh well, chest running is ftw.

55hp also works, goes even faster than normal... It's honestly rly good with 55ing nowon... i took down all trolls in under 10 sec, balth aura, symbol of wrath and shield of judgement with mantra of resolve on.

Do they even drop anything stuff anymore?

Darn, ANet thought of everything. Guess when I did that hench flagging trick the other day I only imagined better drops.
The trolls still work for the exp farming, though.

True, while they don't drop the greatest stuff, some people do enjoy farming them, I just posted to say that an old build that no longer works does.
And thats not true about the majority farming for XP, a year ago they had much better drops, and I could easily make 10k an hour if I was lucky. Harder work than most things like UW and stuff, but hey it was fun.
But of course as many people have mentioned in this thread, the drops just aren't as good anymore, and the merchant whites that made most of the money drop 1/8th as much.
Perhaps someone can create a solo hard mode build, I was really close to killing most of them in hard mode with THIS build.

I die running to the cave on HM (I use the olde Prophecies-only skills one, which is pretty similar and still very effective).
Of course I can probably tweak it somehow. It's the avicara that kill.
