Coming back after years of WoW. Pointers?

Hello all:

I bought GW (Prophecies) when it first came out. I have a level 5 Necromancer / Ranger named Evil Peppard. I stopped playing shortly after I got GW and got hooked on Wow for over two and half years.

Although I still love WoW and the Guild I am in, I am getting a little burned out on WoW and wanted to come back to GW.

I have been all over this section of the Forum doing research, but I had one main question: Will it be easy to pick back up in GW after being away for so long? My main concern is there may not be many people playing Prophecies anymore and I don't want to get stuck trying to level and reacquaint myself with the game, only to find myself having no one to play with (or, heaven forbid, only a bunch of 10 year olds).

I also never got into a Guild in GW when I played before. I'll refer to the Guild Recruitment section of this Forum but, I presume getting into a Guild in GW is just as important as it was to be in a Guild in WoW for gameplay, guidance, etc.?

Being only level 5, you should not have any problems picking back up, and there are still alot of players in prophecies if you need help.
As for guilds, you dont need them, but they make the game alot funner.

Try to go hunting charr in pre-searing for the charr bag.
It's worth 5K but to some people it's worth 20K.
Depending on how desprate thay are to get it.

I think you might have your numbers confused since GW wont have even been live for 2 years 'til Saturday, or Friday for preorders O.o

Well i had the same 'problem' as you a few weeks ago. Although i was a old Veteran GW player, and had casually pvp d during that time. I think you will have no trouble getting adjusted (hardest bit is remembering the diffrent controls.) in fact i would say you probably have it easier, because for you guild wars is almost completely new, and the blissful ignorance about any game, is the best bit about it. If your having trouble trying to get used to it, or find yourself disliking it, then if you have a close real life friend who will buy the game, then it makes it so much more enjoyable, and is really the only way i like playing new games, especially if your on a free internet phone to them.

Salvage ALOT! You'll need the items to make some of the new armor out there if you get some more GW games.Try to make a minion master because you can create a little army everyone likes!

There are lots of people now in Tyria, now when Hard Mode came out, finding people to play shouldn't be a problem, especially in the evening.

It might be a bit difficult to get used to the joy of not paying monthly to play a game, but otherwise you should be fine.

Just a few words to let you know that I am in exactly the same situation right now.
I played GW from the initial day and had a great guild and spent many enjoyable hours until I got well and truly hooked on the Blizzard WoW addiction.
I have 2 lvl70 chars and 4 others in mid 60s.
I spent months in the BGs to attain Rank 13 " Field Marshal"
Spent countless hours inside caves being wiped by bosses and re trying time and time again.

Then Blizzaed sold out everyone to amass its true identity of business comes first.
Free WoW in Sunday newspapers, every game shop has free monthly trials and now the game for me is well and truly dead.
The community , which we all know is virtually the lifeblood of every game has become a school playground with countless pety immature leet speaking conversations.
The whole entity of "World of Warcraft" is now a 10-15 year old bunk off school and play in the online world and annoy every mature gamer with constant barage of abuse.
I have re - installed the original GW and Factions, and immidiately it feels a more mature and helpfull environment.
The graphics are way , way above the cartoon stuff of WoW and the combat system has evolved immensely since I was last on.
Yes , I do see some WoW additions like the scrolling combat text, but that is where to me the simularities end.
Dont get me wrong , I aint a WoW basher. The game is and always has been an awesome achievement, but who wants to spend all day at work and come home to relax and only to be surrounded by whinging, leet speaking, arguing little brats all evening.
I am just hoping that my return feelings are not to be dampened by the same style community as WoW.
So far I dont see it and fingers crossed I wont see it.
Lets face it every mmorpg is all about one thing...."community".
It can be the behemoth thats WoW with its massive support and huge fan base .
But does that make for enjoyement?
I am a person who actually enjoys helping others out. From being a Clan leader in Cod to a GM in GW originally.
And looking at the environment on my return , I am very pleased to say it looks like its a grand farewell to my toon chars in the kiddy "World of Kidcraft".

Thanks for taking the time to write all this. I have to agree with you. I have a level 70 Warlock in WOW, along with a 64 Priest and a 60 Paladin. I have spent time in BG's and ground away at gaining "Rep". I have been irritated countless times with all the obvious kids (and immature adults) in game. Smart ass remarks, flaming, etc.

On the other hand, I have been privileged to be part of a few great Guilds over the last 2.5 years and have met some very nice people.

I feel like I am ready for a break and fired up GW last night. Had to wait a bit since there were so many updates that needed to be downloaded, but had a great time exploring and not being bomarded in chat with spamming from gold farmers selling gold, flaming and all the other kindergarten crap in "barrens chat".

My next move is to continue getting re-acquianted with the game, then look for a good Guild to join.

Again, I appreciate your perspective and glad to know there are other WoW players wanting to make the move.

I started salvaging last night, but what do I do with the stuff? Do I take it to someone so they can craft some things for me?

The other problem I have is, it takes up so much bag space and all I have is a 20 slotter. Is there a bank (or similar) I can store these and other items? Right now, I have just been selling my salvaged material.

I will also do a search for "salvage" on this site.

Theres a collector(..or trader?) that gives you a bag pouch, that gives you an additional five slots. theres those charr bags (IMO, not worth it unless you're planning on being in pre-searing for ages) but when you get to post searing, theres storage and also, you can buy bags which give you another 5 inventory slots, which you can later upgrade to 10 slots with a rune of holding.. hope that helped.

EDIT: also, the materials you salvage can be used to create armour and weapons in post searing. (forgot to answer that)

May I ask, what is "pre searing" and "post searing"? Do I go "post searing" after achieving a certain level or something? I presume it refers to somehow completing the basics or something.

I strongly recommend finding a strong guild. Think of your guild as an extension of your friends list, with members you are (for the most part) familiar with, and members that frequently help you when you ask for advice or want information.

If your guild isn't doing that, then you aren't in the right one. It can be hard for newbies to pick up the game and get into a guild they like because many people don't have the patience to go back and do low level missions again, etc., but if you find the right one, your experience will be much better.

Also, don't purchase armor until you get to Droknar's Forge. It is a common mistake for people to craft armor. Don't do this, because max armor is right around the corner.

In addition to the above, don't get caught up in making money early in the game. Until you are an established level 20 character, you really don't need gold for much. If you get caught up farming, or attempting to, you will miss out on many aspects of the game. I recommend completing at least 3/4 of the campaign before resorting to farming, so as to experience it in full.

Bad advice imo; for someone's very first time through the game, they wont be able to swap over max weapons from other characters, have skills unlocked, or the expeirence to know how to get to Droknors until late in the game.

I remember for my first Phophecies character I bought armor a lot before I figured out where the better ones were on my next characters.

To the OP:
Buy armor as when you see it is 10-15 points above what you currently have.

Use guildwiki for facts or explainations on anything GW, it helps a lot.

In campaigns other than Prophecies it is necesarry to upgrade armor before getting to max. In Prophecies, as soon as one reached Beacons Perch they will see people spamming Droks runs. Asking any one of these people what is at Droks will grant the response "max armor."

If you had known there was the best armor in the game at a nearby place, would you have waited before upgrading your armor? If not, will just waste money, because the starter armor can easily get you up to Beacons Perch.

i'm only level 5, my friend is level 8, we just upgraded to krytan's armor..easy to get, and replaces the starter armor...looks better too

firstly, seeing as uve been wasting money for the past 2 years, you might have the compulsion to throw $15 bucks a month into the toilet. Resist! no but seriously, you'll be fine, after playing through prof all u can do thats high lvl is vanquish and guardian titles and Fow/UW, but itll be a while till then.

i'm new to the game, so i'm just reading it for the first time now, and just thought i would share some info, maybe get some useful info in return...

i could have easily just made a new post, but since most people will tell you to use the search feature instead of opening new posts, i guess you just cant make everyone happy...

lastly, i'm a former wow player also..i played about a year and a half, but stopped over a year ago when my babies were born...twin girls = no time for 40 man , 5 hour raids lol

I'd agree. Upgrading through the ranks of non-elite armor is not terribly expensive. Take every practical armor advantage you can get.

LOL....and now almost four years after the last post, I come back yet again to review posts I had previously written, and get reacquainted with the game.

My wife has now gotten into PC gaming, and we are really looking forward to GW2. We are currently playing Rift, but I picked up GW and all the expansions for both of us, so we'd have a secondary game, plus something to dabble in before GW2 releases.

The information in this thread is just as valuable to me now as it was all those years ago. I'm glad it is still here.
