I have been playing Guild Wars for about 18 months now without a problem.
I have all 3 campaigns, Prophecies, Faction and Nightfall.
Friday morning, I got the following message when I tried to connect, "The installer could not write Guild Wars to the specified directory. Please check that you have administrative access, that you have permission to install ..."
COULD THIS BE THE REASON WHY:
When I was playing Thursday night I got the usual message that "a new build of Guild Wars was available, to exit the game and return". I played on for a while and then exited the game. As I was tired I shut down my PC without restarting the game. Could this be the reason for the problem?
Please help.
The installer could not write to Guild wars...

Open your firewall configuration and remove any GW program entries.
Then deactivate your anti-virus software and double-click Gw.exe. Download the update and give Gw.exe the necessary rights your firewall software is asking for.
GW should start properly now.
You can reactivate your anti-virus software afterwards.
Edit: And next time, deactivate your anti-virus software before downloading any GW updates. That's how it works for me, anyway.

No dice. I tried to uninstall like the link above stated, that didn't help either. Thank you for the help though. I submitted a ticket to tech help, wish me luck.

I've heard some reports that the latest build of GW sometimes has issues with Spybot, specifically the Tea Timer. If you have Spybot installed turn off the Tea Timer.

Yep, Spybot was the problem in my case and it works fine after you take out teatimer.
