The Paragon Basics

Always glad to assist a project worth being done... and this one is definitely worth it.

Even if Frenzy and Flail are debated, Aggressive Refrain is hands down, the BEST IAS currently in the game. Its high energy cost makes it quite exclusive, and the shout recharge makes it for limited useage, yet when applied by a Paragon or a warrior who builds adrenaline and runs through shouts in rapid fashion, it is unstoppable.
[skill=big]Aggressive Refrain[/skill]
In the case of the warrior, I would stick with previously mentioned warrior based IAS, since they work well, though flawed and moderately debilitating. However, the paragon's IAS should have no challengers. Adrenaline can be built by all, and Flail has little setbacks for a Paragon, since their is little movement, yet, AR is still better for its overall energy cost/duration ratio.
Just my 2 cents on Paragons and IAS useage.

And I just made a paragon 3 days ago.
Im having lots of fun with him. It is that good.
Some builds with FA and AR and GFTE are awesome with an olias jagged bones/animate dead minions.
You got to see it, try putting that build on morghan and an olias with the build and see how easy you tear the mobs apart, im LOVING IT.

One good secondary class skill that youve missed out on for a paragon is Signet of Removal. It works very well on a support para for some inexpensive condition + hex removal. Just throw in a prot monk along side it to provide the enchants.
This is my favorite para bar as I run Searing flames + critical barragers in PVE:
[skill]Anthem of envy[/skill][skill]"go for the eyes!"[/skill][skill]"find their weakness!"[/skill][skill]Signet of removal[/skill][skill]"They're on fire!"[/skill][skill]"stand your ground!"[/skill][skill]"fall back!"[/skill][skill]signet of return[/skill]
It adds fantastic support, buffing both the offence and defence of the team. Depending on the area im playing, I swap the elite for any out of cautery signet, expel hexes or charge (mostly is time restrained missions).

Very nice guide!
I especially like the Splintered Spear build.

I apologize in advance. I just finished the MCAT and don't feel like trying to figure out how to put nice pretty skill links and whatnot in this post.
I just wanted to say that I recently got NF and began a paragon. She is to around lvl 15 and I have often referred to this thread as it includes some very useful information. For no apparent reason I made a P/E because the Steam ontop of the burning seemed like a nice synergy to me. As such I have been examining the "Steaming Striker" build quoted in the first post of this thread.
I've yet to try this build but I was already considering some possible changes and was wondering if you (clawofcrimson) could suggest gear (pve and pvp if the build can be used for both).
Mainly, I thought it would be nice to achieve 12 leadership (for the added second of burning on Anthem of Flame) and possibly drop Blazing Spear and maybe replace it with Merciless Spear. Wondering what you think of this and how you would pursue it (if it is a change worth making).
I originally had a much longer post imagined but I decided to err on the side of parsimony and let everyone figure out all the nice possible combos that would be available with such changes to the build and whatnot.
Thank you for your time,
Towski

Very good guide for general purpose PvE paragons. Can help people get started and have an idea of what types of builds they can run well on the paragon with pretty nice descriptions on some skills. PvP paragons probably wouldn't look here for much insight, so I wouldn't be too worried about the lack of depth and accuracy for how these skills affect PvP.

my only complaint is that the spear attacks cause Heks Rampage to end early. Couldnt that be replaced with Call of haste to help the pet attack faster for more damage?

Very Nice! Well worked on!

Clawofcrimson Great Job on the first post in this thread, I know that took a long time and effort on your part and I commend you on a job well done m8
I'm happy to see someone put up a positive note for the Paragon class being one myself all I ever see on the forums from people is flaming about this great class.
Also glad to see that after reading your guide that people are willing to give the Paragon another shot, heck they are so diverse there is no reason not to have at least one slot filled with a Paragon even if you are hammering away at something LOL.
I myself have quite a few builds to add to this topic for the Paragon and maybe even some tactics on certin missions while being a Paragon.
Once again Great job Clawofcrimson and keep on the great work m8

thank you for your time invested in this great guide.
A good example of what exp players (with time) should follow.

[card]barbed spear[/card][card]blazing spear[/card][card]Stunning strike[/card] [card]steam[/card][card]anthem of flame[/card][card]Aggressive Refrain[/card][card]leader's comfort[/card][card]signet of return[/card]
11 +1+3 spear mastery
10 water magic
10 +1 leadership.
The two most powerful shutdown conditions in the game can be acheived with this build. Although you can still wield a max shield, you will only get 8AL out of it. Take advatage of the + damage of steam as well. Well I would have a hard time getting rid of blazing spear because of its reliability to apply burning... If you have a warrior on you, a quick two skill combo can put blind on him... but let me play around with the build and see what can be done.

you can play around with the build how you like... I thought hecket's was a better choice than 'tiger's fury' and 'call of haste' because of the main focus of the build. ..... to apply pressure. The attack skills in the build don't really do damage, so spiking them down with a combo isn't really necessary. I usually use the skills like this.
hecket's (build adrenaline..and wait for pet to engage), barbed, poison, ...heckets ,barbed, poison, blazing, merciless ..etc...

Feel free to post any builds you have found useful.

Great guide, Clawofcrimson! Thank you for all your work and thoughtful information!
I've been playing a Paragon since I started Nightfall, and opted to make him a P/D - Agressive Refrain and GFTEs, coupled with good armor, makes him a pretty good rampager. (I've gone toe-to-toe with the Acolyte of Dwayna - after taking out the support units - and prevailed. Yes, with monk heroes to keep my butt alive. But, I've found it a useful build for farming greens. I managed to get Melandru's grip fairly easily with him!) Skuld
on that steam paragon you'll want a major leadership for for 3s burning

Yeah I might have to agree with you. I played around with Anthem of Flame (as my only chant and my only burning skill) the other day and found that I would often be waiting for it to recharge when I wanted to steam someone.
I found myself trying to balance the recharges of Anthem of Flame and Steam so that I would always Steam someone that I set on fire... This was kind of a pain in the ass. I do think that I may have found one interesting thing to add: The way the breakpoints for Blind duration on steam work, at 5-7 points, you get 7 seconds of blind; at 8-10 points, you get 8 seconds of blind. Thus, if one doesn't mind losing 8 points of cold damage per Steam cast, one can drop Water Magic from 10 to 8 and increase Leadership from 10 to 11. This allows a Leadership of 12 (and a 3 second burning anthem of flame) with only a minor rune. Just something to think about. One last thing, what gear (armor) would be best for this build (pve and pvp because I imagine that more hp would be better for pvp, though I could be wrong). Peace clawofcrimson

Peace yeah + hp is a good choice... otherwise I would just do centurions on chest and legs and radiant everywhere else. The adjustment to leadership is a good one... I will edit the original build. @sixofone I know what you mean... The 'focused swordsman' build can really be used with any secondary weapon... (just change the first 3 skills) However I would be careful about getting used to builds like that in pve... (if you were using a scythe that is) because once we want to try out pvp those builds are not accepted. (mostly because a primary dervish would probably to the same job better) ...but good job tanking dwayna. angeleyes
Great guide! I'm going to use this a lot of times ;-)

Thanks for the guide. This is awesome. I love being a Paragon and the concept of having a supportive role. Once I beat the missions I'd love to do an all Paragon group in the place you were talking about in your other post. P's are gonna take over!
sephiroth907
For the build that includes Blood is Power are you supposed to get adrenalin just through attacking with a spear (with no spear mastery) alown?
btw awesome guild clawofcrimson
^ you could use a wand as well... or just switch out the adrenal skills.
cyvil
Although my question applies to shouts in general, the Shouting Orders build (Damage Support P/N Order of Pain) is the build from which my question developed. There is some debate as to whether or not the "target ally" skills apply to minions. From the wiki description of "ally," it seems that all of the skills, aside from OoP are affected by any green symbols within range. Do these skills apply to/benfit from minions, pets and spirits?
clawofcrimson
'ALLY' is including minions as well (i.e. fall back will increase speed to and heal minions)
Llednar
While I do not agree with all of what was said in the guide, this post was still an informative read, I'd like to see some clean-up done, grammar check, punctuation, more PvE/PvP Build lables, etc...
clawofcrimson
Ya .... I am planning to do some clean up after the new updated skills stick...
Phantom Flux
I'm glad you've created this article. I've always been searching a way of making my paragon more fun that I try to make myself believe of it. Even in AB I've been finding the Paragon useless, especially if the only thing it can do is support a team that doesn't deserve any supporting. (EX: Team splitting up to fight mobs and be a bunch of Kelly Bundys.)

how effective is 25% IAS on a spear?

Thanks for the guide, very good and useful!

ty ty ty! for this guide Claw, just recreated my paragon and needet some advice, this really helped me out. Really great job!
Droz the Merciless
Interesting read. Like some of the others, I made a Paragon when NF first came out, then I just left him be. Your guide along with the prompting of one of my guild officers has inspired me to re-exam my Paragon, and all the uses I can put him to. Thank you.
Legolas The Ranger
GREAT POST, and nice builds, i'm looking forward to using those builds... , cya later
Banane-O-Man
Will this build work for PvE, it is a based adrenaline/sword p/w build. Well here it is.
12 Swordmanship 9+1 Motivation 9+1 Command {S}Dragon Slash (Elite) {S}Sun and Moon Slash {S}Standing Slash {M}Mending Refrain {C}Stand your Ground / Bladeturn Refrain {C}Go For the Eyes {M}Finale of Restoration Rez I didn't test it out yet but I think it has decent damage, some healing and 2 party buff, this is mostly a tank build that I though of. Can anyone think of a speed buff that would make this build more viable so you can hit faster and gain adrenaline faster too? PS: Paragons are Overpowerd ~.^ Tyler Carter
Im Very Impressed
Alana Gravebed
Awesome guide Claw, lots of work... that has changed my paragon status from Mule to playable.
I have a question for you, when paragons first came out ppl were saying they would be the best Droks runners... where are they?? we see Dervish a lot walking their way to droks. Is it not possible or too hard to run droks with a Paragon? Dean Harper
add this build to support builds:
http://www.pvxwiki.com/wiki/Build:P/W_Party_Support Spartian
Thks for all.
Any news for the new skills from eye of the north? Curassis Ilmensen
Very nice guide!
I already have a L20 Paragon, but besides disliking most of the available armours i am not going to play with him anymore until ANet gives them helmets!!!! Fighting with shield and spear? Design looking ancient? Where are the greak/roman/... style helmets? Kayu Ishida
Wow! I will definately work on my paragon now! I usually play a monk, so being a paragon will allow me to continue my roll as a party supporter, yet it will also give me a nice profession change to play around with. Thank you for posting this amazing thread!

Great review and build guide/analysis !
Made my 1st one today (as i just bought NightFall heh) before I even knew about your post. This will defiantly come in handy Regards MasterofDarknedd
