All of the above is a gift.
Most players are pretty happy with the extras, but some are not.
Please feel free to dismiss, ignore, diminish, or denigrate the event, the birthday gifts, or our explanation of these circumstances, as you wish.

This is probably the most insidious insult a service provider can say to his/her customer. Paraphrased, Anet is saying that the events they provide are "gifts" -- they did not have to do it. However, that is not a valid excuse for making a mistake while delivering the gift ... or ruining the gift itself.

It would be like a guy buying candies or flowers for his girlfriend. He doesn't have to do it. But if he does it, he better do it right. The candies should still be pretty and edible (not melted and rotten), or the flowers should be fresh (not wilted) ... and the thorns, if any, nibbed down.

And that example is not really appropriate because the relationship between the guy and the girl is based on love. Anet's relationship with us is _not_ based on love. We have a relationship based on greed. There's a good chance the girlfriend will forgive the guy for his shortcomings and take value in the intention of the gift. There's little room for forgiveness in a greed-based relationship.

You either deliver your "gift" in good condition, or you don't deliver it at all. Take the time and effort to produce a service with quality; otherwise, people will look to do their business elsewhere.

If you hate Anet's gifts to you so much you could always stop playing.

I would love to see you try to program something and have it released with absolutely zero bugs on the first try. The issue everyone was complaining about was the rollbacks and the loss of progress on the lucky/unlucky titles. those rollbacks were being caused by players using an exploit. no matter how good a programmer is, there are always people looking for holes in the code and they're usually found.

Your comparison to buying flowers or chocolate doesn't even work here at all. how much effort does it take to go to the store and buy flowers or chocolate? something that would be closer to a good example would be if you had to grow the flowers yourself or make the chocolate yourself.

Oh for goodness sakes. Stop compalining about something nice they did for the community! I am sure you are absolutely perfect and nothing you do ever runs anything but perfectly smooth. *rolls eyes* You have very unrealistic views of how things "should" be and how things really are in the world. I am really starting to wish people who post this kind of foolishness (and that is what it is) would just stop complaining or leave already.

I really hope they STOP giving events and gifts and START fixing the game. Gaile, the community is ungrateful for everything. So stop giving them gifts. The grateful people will be very happy that the game is being balanced and fixed while the ungratefuls will complain that they miss getting free minipets and holiday items.

How is the 'gift' of minipets not 'right'? Its not as if the Minipets do anything bad to you. OK, some people aren't happy with it obviously, but there are just as many who are.

You're saying that No gift is better than a bad gift. If you believe this, then stop whining and when you get your minipet, just bin it. ANet aren't going to give you a 'better' gift no matter how much you whine, so its 'No gift' or 'Bad gift'. Your choice.

Christ! If I am Anet, I'll pack my back and move to Tahiti and wish I never made this free online game ever again. Gaile was right, they didn't even have to care about all these events, updates, free stuffs but they did it. They're not perfect but right or wrong they did it anyway and asked nothing out of it. Jeez some people.

I guess the phrase "Never Look a Gift Horse in the Mouth" is unknown to you...

Honestly, Gaile saying that these events are "gifts" is being a bit exaggerated, IMO. A-Net is doing whatever they can to keep and expand their playerbase, in order to be able to sell GW:EN and GW2 when they come out. Events like this are keys to doing so...otherwise, the rate at which player attrition would occur would exponentially increase.

Since I'm not going anywhere anytime soon, these were "gifts" to me. But A-Net isn't being as charitable as Gaile would make it seem, IMO.

"Pre-nerf" is incorrect. It's pre-buff.

Great. another cheese and whine party.

Gaile makes a good point and conveys it as clear as day. Its extra content at no cost to us (financial or otherwise) that they are not obliged to put in - but they do. Personally, I believe that this was done with the intentions of pleasing people but, as with all events, keeps us interested and with the game. This is good business practice and I wouldn't condemn them for doing so. Neither should anybody else.

Mistakes happen. That's why most of us exist.

I think we can all see where this is going.

There's a lot of venting here which is fine but nothing to make an entire topic about. If you can think of something constructive to solve the issue with, and less accusation-based, feel free to share your thoughts but this isn't doing us any good.

And while I have your attention, please stop putting a sig in every one of your posts. The feature is disabled to registered users for a reason.

Thanks.
