Just reinstalled windows, and sound isnt working

due to a problematic program, i had to reinstall windows on my computer and lost all of my files

since then, everything works fine, except for my sound

i tried the trouble shooting process and everything is fine, sound driver, nothing is muted, and no problems playing stuff in windows media player. its just that the sound wont play

anyone have an idea whats wrong?

You need to install a sound card driver. To do this, you first need to find out what type of sound card you are using. You can use programs like Everest or Driver Genius to find that out. Once you find the sound card that you are using, I think you just use Google to find the appropriate sound card driver to install.

well, i had my computer scanned for drivers and i found this

when i try to "Reinstall or Upgrade" the SoundMAX driver with a driver that i found online, i get



i tried the Sound Blaster driver, and it hasnt done much

what motherboard are you using? if you do a start>run>dxdiag and copy/paste your "system model" into google, the manufacturer's webpage should show up in the first couple results. then just download the drivers from their site.

Try alternately disabling either the SoundMax or Creative drivers. Also, have you re-installed DirectX 9.0c? I'd try that at least.

Another thing you might try: Run gw.exe -sndwinmm
From what I remember, this bypasses the DirectX audio drivers and uses that vanilla ones. You might have a bit more audio latency, but it could work.

I'd double-check to make sure there's nothing silly going on by hitting the "Reset Settings" button in the GW control panel. It could be that the internal settings are messed up, and that should correct them (and raise the volume bars) if they are indeed wonky.

Also, make sure the Windows Control Panel is set correctly for your speaker type. I've noticed that GW tends to me more finicky about that since the audio system update.

If you installed both sets of drivers it's possible that Windows is using one device or the other and not both. Which sound device do you have your speakers plugged into? I'd suggest plugging into the Sound Blaster and disabling your SoundMax device from your BIOS setup. Then go into Control Panel --> Sounds and Audio Devices --> Audio and make sure that the Sound Blaster device is set as your default Sound Playback device.
