Hi all

ive just started guild wars as a disillusioned WOW player and the change is refreshing ive picked a ranger because i liked the hunter in wow, what i want to know is that since there is no minimum range on bows in this game is it worth keeping a melee weapon to hand for up close? pulling with the bow then batterin em? and if so what do people recommend, 2 hand or 1hand and shield?

thx

No, you never need to swap to melee.

The only times you'd want a melee weapon on a ranger is if you made a ranger who was exclusively melee (R/W, R/D or R/A); one could in theory swap to a shield when kiting around, but it's seldom worth the bother.

Hunters are high DPS and easy soloers in WoW, rangers aren't in GW. They're more of a support/disruption class often; sure, they can deal some damage, and a barrage build isn't bad for some DPS against tightly packed enemies, but Rangers are more often used to spread conditions, to interrupt key skills and so on.

ok thx for the info wouldnt mind adding either a warrior or elementalist as a secondary, is it worth it? srry just one more thing, this is probably the noobiest question you'll hear for a while but in wow you right clicked a persons character portrait to whisper them, in gw is there a way to whisper without having to type in names first?

Farming works great with ranger

UW Solo, FoW Solo or Stance tanks with a scythe, works all nicely.

Sometimes it's useful to take Elementalist or Warrior as secondary, just about any secondary has some useful skills. Don't worry, if you don't like your forst choice, you can change it later on - and rangers are fine with just their own skills.

As far as I know, only if they're in the chat window already (after speaking), in the search window or in your friends list. I consider it a serious flaw.

Between the two, Warrior is the better choice, imo.

No, you have to type the name in. -_-

Quickshot/Needler will out-DPS anyone (for a single target of course) if they have a sundering hornbow

As for the question, if you are setup for melee then its good to pull with a bow and then switch to the melee once they come at you, but if you are setup for a bow then always keep the bow. If you are setup for both, then you may want to rethink some things, not the effective to mix

I have played ranger for 1 year and thats all i ever play. If u want to be effective with a bow u cant use a shield and one handed weapon, even as a warrior second. To hit the requirements for bow shields and axe or sword you wouldnt have any points left for expertise an thats what makes rangers so good. I keep a perf req9 tatooed scimitar on me to pull out at the end of a battle and finish them off. This of course doesnt do much unless im using my ritualist splinter weapon build. But its all i need to quench my melee urges.

Bows have a base DPS much lower than melee, and while you get preparations, they just don't compare to what you can get with melee. Melee weapon with a speed boost, a strong conjure elements and attack skills on top and you can churn out stupidly high DPS on a target. Yeah, bows can do ok, but the damage rate for melee weapons is higher as a base, is generally faster attacking (thus getting more benefit from bonuses like a conjure) and you can be spamming damage bonus skills on top of that (while the quickshot/needler only gets base damage plus the bonuses). Take a Moebius/Death Blossom and add a conjure elements to it and you're already getting super DPS.

I get that people like their rangers, but they're just not DPS kings.
