Due to the huge success of my previous idea , I have decided to invent some new system that will ease your average GW life.
I present you:
Recordable Games!

Imagine this:
  • You want to make a GW movie
  • You have no good capture software
  • You do not have a suitable place to host your movie
  • You don't need fancy video editing software
  • or your pc cannot handle big files ( if you have decent capture software that is )

Then here's the deal for you:
  1. You press "Record" through an in-game menu, or hotkey
  2. You play like you want to ( farming run, RA ownage, GvG, anything )
  3. You press "Stop". Your movie is now saved on your PC, in the format A.Net uses to save their observer mode games
  4. You can view your movie again by selecting it from the Movies menu. Much like the template menu and observer mode combined
  5. You will be brought to the instance where the battle was fought. Special camera options let you witness every split second of the action
  6. You can transfer your movies the same way you tranfser templates(In-game, forums, im's, emails etc.) *
  7. Voilà. A perfect way to an everlasting problem.

*I do not know how large these files are going to be. If they appear to be too large, it's probably better not to transfer them through GW's server ( However, how does observer mode work then? )

I hope this is going to be a good suggestion.

Any problems, ideas or remarks? Post them here.

I'd like a button in-game to make it all explode, and bring chaos and panic upon my opponents.
Anyway, nice idea, signed.

What about making it a GW only replay file? It would be a huge inconvenience to anyone who wants it given out to friends, but it could make it a lot smaller. Not sure how it'd work though. I was thinking GTA-style .rep system.

Anyway, signed, it could help farmers who want a small video or a hassle free video.

AkumaZ, that's exactly what I meant. A file with nothing but coordinates...much like obs mode would work now, but it's not streamed, it's read from a file.

option of storing games you observe would be nice also imo

Well that's one of the options: instead of "observing" the match, you would just download it and store it, and you can watch it later.

I like this idea.
Only thing is that we wouldn't really be able to "share" in-game would we?
But we can find alternative methods/

Well Gameshoes...you could be able to share it in-game, if the files are not to big ( no clue on this one ). It would work like Obs Mode. Instead of sending your coordinates to the server, you'd "broadcast" them to anyone viewing.

Anyway for actual reasons I don't think this is a good idea. While it would be a nice feature it would probably use way too much bandwidth and take a long time to implement such a feature. Simplely: Too much of an investment for Anet for not enough return.

Bandwidth issuses? Simple: Don't use bandwith. Use your own CPU to compile it in a replay format. Then send it through IM, e-mail or forums. No bandwidth lost by A.Net. ( I don't know how large an obs mode game would be )

I think this is a good idea, since things like Fraps and Gamecam lag up your game.

how i know what im talking about?

What is being asked here isn't any different from Game Cam or similar programs. Your gonna have to use a lot of power form your computer so those with a lower end computer are going to have a lot of trouble with any program that does the same thing.

In any case, Game Cam is the exact same thing that this person is asking for, they can just share files though rapidshare or megaupload or similar sites.

Well it is different; its not a movie file, what I understand you would be able to move around the camera and what not. So it is quite different; that is not to say it is different enough to be worth implementing. The point is your really need to say more that just 'Game Cam!' to make a valid point.

No it's not like GameCam or Fraps at all. Those programs record what you see on your screen. I want to record what happens in-game. Like observer mode. Obs Mode doesn't send images, it sends coordinates&skill usage.

So it's not GameCam at all: you will not get a movie file. You'd get like Movie1.obs and I don't think any media player can open that. You'd need Guild Wars. But the file size is MUCH smaller, and the quality of the "movie" is scaleable: What the end-user wants on his screen. Not some lame 640*480 blurry youtube vid. The real thing: [email protected] with full audio.

Offcourse, you cannot edit your movies. Maybe you can, if the .obs files were easy to read, comprehend&edit.

I don't know if it's practical or even technically possible to do what you propose, but it would be neat.

This is a great idea.

autosave + overwrite
+ give people the option of "save/start a new movie" when leaving an area etc.

So this is basically the same idea as Battle Recorder in Battlefield 2 / Battlefield 2142. Sounds interesting. I happen to know that many people who make videos for Battlefield use Battle Recorder so that they can attempt a stunt as many times as they want, but be able to go back and use a program like FRAPS to record the best of the takes.
