PvE Normal: 4. Hard Mode: 3.

PvP: 3-4, depends on mood.

I mainly play PVE and I generally bring between 3-4 or 5 if I'm in a stupidly easy area

It's usually 3 but at most I only use 4 max attack skills. I prefer to play utility though so that may be where my habit stems from.

I couldn't give you an accurate recomendation for PvP, as I don't keep up with the "metagame." For PvE however...
Hammer - 4
I recommend [skill]Devastating Hammer[/skill][skill]Crushing Blow[/skill][skill]Fierce Blow[/skill][skill]Heavy Blow[/skill]
Sword - 4 (I'm not so large a fan of the sword)
I recommend [skill]Crippling Slash[/skill][skill]Gash[/skill][skill]Final Thrust[/skill][skill]Distracting Blow[/skill]
Axe - 3
I recommend [skill]Eviscerate[/skill][skill]Executioner's Strike[/skill] And the last is usually Distracting Blow, Disrupting Axe....Critical Chop...or Furious Axe.

along with FgJ thats all I need.

(note: I only use Wild Blow to beat the enemy out of its defensive stances so even though I have 4 attack skills on my bar I use one of those as utility
