Why do ppl say hammers suk in PVE!??
Syanix
hello i started guild wars factions yesterday and i am completely new to the game. My friend gave me his account for free because he quit. I just want to state that why do ppl say hammers suck in pve? i have a gold hammer and i basically do tonnes of dmg and kill monsters very quickly and im just lvl 13. Atm i have full Leigionnares Ascalon armor(the shiny grey armor) and i have 350 hp. I basically never die when i am with henchmen and do alot of dmg. What is the reason for saying hammers are bad? you might be right but i dont think its that bad+ y does everyone use axes or swords? y no hammers involved? help would be good

Mostly because of the slow attack rate. You can do damage faster with the sword or axe.

Slower attack speed, ergo slower adrenaline gain
No adrenaline-based Deep Wound skill
up to 30 less health
at least 16 less armor
Crude Swing is gay (you only have Factions, so you wouldn't know, but still...)
You may use the hammer now at level 13 and get away with it because the game is easy, but when you get to higher level areas you'll either find yourself leaning towards one handed weapons or find yourself being peeled from the sidewalk more often than you care for. I'm not saying hammers are useless in PVE, but knockdowns are their big advantage and knockdowns are honestly more important in PVP.

Hammers don't suck in PvE.
However, the finesse and disruption that hammers bring to play aren't required in PvE, the raw damage available through Axe and Sword skills is generally of more use. Personally, I like running hammers, and if there's more than 1 warrior in a party, I'll let the other guy handle the aggro-ing and axe-ing that warriors usually do, while I go and keep a monk on its arse.

It basically comes down to this: Hammers provide control, and in PvE, why control when you can just D-Slash him in half? Damage > Control in PvE.

In addition to previous posts, a hammer is best used as a chain of skills. Your target will often be dead right after you get off your first attack or two. The hammer is great, most definately. However, it just isn't any better than the axe or sword in PvE. And it lowers your potential armor and health, important things for PvE.

Two builds I use almost all the time in PvE - OQcTEtJX3RUzVQLStvSAYCixBA, OQATE3JXtZ8NWALSNyihNAgxBA. The second inspired by somethin a guildie gave me when I asked for a PvE warr build. Consistent dmg in both, especially the first.

hammers aint weak..when used right hammers overcome axe and sword..most ppl think because of the small -16 armour that hammers suck..but really when used right hammers is devastating..

Hammers are great but I agree that in higher level areas, hammers can be a liability, especially in areas where the warrior needs to primarily stance so others can mop up mobs. If it wasn't for knockdown, hammers would never be used since thats their only advantage. I run all three weapon masteries with my war and outside AB I can't say I use hammers that often. They're definitely the most fun of war weapons to use though.

the only thing stopping me frm hitting foes with a giant stick is $ if i have the mursaat hammer i be hitting ard with 1
Bryant Again
Nothing sucks in PvE. Play how you like. Also, knockdown shuts down baddies nicely.
Also, I've found hammers much more effective in Hard Mode than most of my sword builds. Not as fun, though, so that's why I'm still D-slashing my way through it all, heh heh heh.

I've found the same as Bryant Again, that hammers are far more effective than swords in hard mode, but instead of finding them boring in comparison, I find it incredibly hard to swap back to swords now.
The disruption a hammer affords is addictive and surely one of the best things about being a warrior.
Yeah, not everything can be knocked down in PvE, but the vast majority of stuff can be, and once it's on its arse, it's pretty much gonna stay there for 7 seconds out of every 10
I even find axes less fun now.
I think I'm a KD addict.

Hammers have a higher base DPS than swords or axes, nad it only gets better under IAS.

That's only half the story. The other half is skills, and in that regard sword dps is the highest of all in pve.

earth shaker cant be interupted, unless your talking about one that you didnt KD, and the chances are he'll be wanding someone else with less armor.
Silly Warrior
People say they suck for a few of the following reasons:
The number of builds associated with hammers.
The skill and elite skill list of hammers.
The number of solo builds.
The versitility of the hammer builds, and the hammer in general.
Slow attack rate.
No extra bonus from shield/offhand.
Now of course they are quite useful, and in many cases other classes use them to deal large amounts of damage. Like the RaO build (Rampage as One), a Ranger/Warrior that uses a hammer and pets to knockdown and deal message amounts of damage fast with RaO.
There are plenty of good things about hammers.
Its totally subject to opinion, and if you don't like Hammers, don't use them. If you do like them, use them.
