You could simply get them to run with u, stick them out of range and then unflag them back into range of xp, there is no advantage from doing this ur way than doing it normally.

Faer is right, it was placed in the game to prevent a much more serious bug. This is laughable, because heroes level ridiculously quickly anyway. I'm honestly curious how much time you spent doing this, because you could have spent it elsewhere.
The bug in question involved placing recall on a hero and then flagging the hero through a portal (the hero doesnt activate the portal, he just runs straight through), and then you stopped maintaining recall. You could then run around outside the level, gaining exploration titles without the hassle of enemies.
