Utopia Game?
Shane Postus
Hey. ive been reading (and experiencing) issues of the declining quality of high-tier PvP in Guild Wars, and i myself have always found GW PvE to be subpar. I have some pretty decent ideas (i think) that probably couldnt be implemented but i think its nice to throw out ideas to make your perfect game.
3 Areas of play each with different requirements, objectives, and boundaries.
Area 1: General PvE
Sounds like its title, its PvE... you kill monsters and AI, make some money, upgrade. Whats my biggest gripe about GW PvE? Theres a lack of things to do. Not in the sense that you cant go do something, but its all the same and its all essentially pointless. Youre farming for endless hours to buy armor that rarely looks better than the "affordable" version (maybe its just me but i can hardly ever distinguish a person w/ FoW from a person w/ 1.5k). I propose this: No level cap and increasingly BETTER (not just better looking) armor and weapons. Bet this had been said before but i think that you should have goals in PvE that can never really be accomplished so when youre running through sorrows furnace you can say: "only 10k more xp until my atk strength levels!". Also tradeskills are cool. No limit on the tradeskills either. If they have 10 different trades you should be able to learn all 10 if you put the time into it. Just something to break up the monotomy of monster bashing. Now obviously you wouldnt get more attribute points but if youre a warrior your auto attacks could increase w/ levels, spellcasters could have their spells amplified/ other effects with high levels.
Now going along with this would be quests. These quests would get harder according to your level and would have requirements. Something along the lines of level 45 cooking, 50 magic, 50 strength, and *insert previous quest* must be completed. There could be ministories in the quests and they could give grand rewards for incentives (unlike the ones now).
Area 2: Competetive PvP
This is what we have now and call the arenas (and GvG). Different arenas where balanced PvP can take place. Everything that we have now is implemented (level cap, nearly unlimited access to all skills, PvP char customization, etc). Most games that have great PvE lack here. There needs to be a balanced PvP where time investment isnt the determining factor. Perhaps spice it up by adding rewards? Gold instead of faction perhaps?
Area 3: "Casual PvP"
I like the idea of unorganized, free-for-all pvp perhaps in the middle of the 3 PvE worlds. Something like the Fight Pits where you bring your PvE chars (no level caps, uber-1337 armor/weps, etc) and just battle. There could be objectives, but no defined teams or anything. Perhaps segregate zones of battle depending on level. Like lvl 20 (minimum lvl to enter) to lvl 30's fight in one instanced zone (as many people can be in there as they want, along the lines of 20 vs 20 ideally, but nothing definate), 30-40's in another, etc... This kind of pvp is casual. you click enter and you start fighting. You can have team strategies (however primitive), or it could be a 1v1 fest. Id like to incorporate a risk/reward system into this too. Maybe something like armor loss/gain, corpse looting, etc. I think PvP is more fun when you have everything (or a lot anyways) to lose and just as much to gain.
Well this would be my ideal picture of GW. maybe you guys like it too and it could get incorporated into GW2... or even add your own ideas.

Do you realy want another ORPG that has cooking and dusting and every thing you don't need to fight Abbadon or Lich Lords
People already wine about grind and adding all the crap RS has would make it worse
One of the reasons i play GW is it simple style. You pick up a sword you slash things or a bow and shoot things. You don't have to go mine the ore then find a smelter then a blacksmith. Or spend years lvl'ing those until you can make the item you want
i agree on no level cap but it raises two major balance issues so maybe just for cosmetics as longs as idiots don't think it's a mesure of skill and discriminate like at pre-searing "LFP Charr hunt lvl 10+" ok fair enogh party sive is only 2 and you don't want a lvl 4 covering you. But once everyone is off starters and into lvl 20 turf any additional lvls that are purely a mark of time spent should not be considered eg "LFP MISSION MASTERS lvl 134+ only"
1) +20 (?) max health per level would make you unstoppable at high level
2) 12 for every attribute would make some proffesions more powerful than others
But on the flip side devout PvE'ers should be rewarded with more than just a skill point
And before the PvP communtity rants at me you should be rewarded with . . with . . no actully you already have enough rewards
Sorry if you enjoy PvP, WoW or RS and this seems harsh but it's just my opinion

Muaha ha ha! I can cook crumpets! Feel my wrath Lich Lord!!
Anyway I really like the guild wars style of not having to grind attributes and skills like that, I'm pretty sure this is meant to be a casual online game, so adding more grind would be rather silly

IIRC GW PvP != time invested = win, unless you're shooting for rank 9&other titles.
You can win a championship if you only played for a week....

No thanks, I do enough cooking, cleaning and work at home I don't need it in a game as well. If I wanted that I would play WoW.

there will never be a utopia game...people always find something to complain about.

There can be a game that is perfect to a certain group of players, but just try and stop the other groups from coming and whining about things they dont like, it wont work. There will always be a problem with a game for some of its players.
But Guild Wars 2 might be a big problem if its like WoW because it caters to a completely diffrent type of player, so making a game in WoW's image would alienate most of the players so i dont think A-net will do that, they have brains.
That said i dont think its smart if Guild Wars takes a radicly diffrent course, and if GW2 dous just that they should definetly keep paying good attention to GW 1.

I play GW not WoW for 3 main reasons
1st - GW i cant start and play i don't need to mess around riding flying things at 50 silver a go to travel
2nd - WoW having cooking and blacksmithing ... that you can only do two of mean you miss a huge amount of content
3rd - no monthly fees.
Anet = nice Blizzard = robbers

Aussie Boy
Starts toasting hot sticky pop tarts to chuck at Charr mobs
maybe they will start eating them and get distracted long enough for me to take em all out in one go.
Anyway I do hope it keeps bits of GW1 aspects game play leveling etc etc and not be drastically diff to it or not similar to Wow grinding and other games.
Just have to wait and see i guess

These belong in the GW 2 Suggestion Thread in Sardelac Sanitarium. Almost everything you posted here WILL BE in Guild Wars 2. Please read the forum subtitiles...
One reason I play Guild Wars is because I'm not overwhelmed by tradeskills to stay competitive and in the game. It looks like ArenaNet may have some similar ideas... I just hope they get rid of them.
Anyway, it sounds like you're trying to make a WoW if not restating what will be in Guild Wars 2. If you can afford WoW, go play that. It pretty much has all you want.

Am I the only one old enough to remember that UTOPIA game, on the intellivision I think....the first god game I can think of. You had your little island and were racing against the competing island....balancing your crops against industry...quelling rebellions......just when things were going well a hurricane would come through and wipe you out.
Good times...
Good times...

Now that that's outta the way...
The general PvE is something that they're going to implement in Guild Wars 2. They've already stated that they won't raise the level cap in GW1. As to trade skills, not sure. Normal tradeskills sounds lame, but a blacksmithing skill would be pretty tight, or something more innovative. I guess it depends.
PvP as it is is pretty decent, but not neccesarily my forte'. Maybe GW2 will introduce more skillbased combat rather than skills/build based. Only time will tell.
Now about the free-for-all PvP: Not in GW1. The way it's set up is build balanced, not 1v1 balanced. Not sure if they'll make it such in GW2. Again, only time will tell.
As for your ideal picture, it doesn't sound like you're going to be disappointed when GW2 arrives, heh.
