why do male players make female toons?
i always viewed this game as a roleplay fantasy type thing. like my toon was an extension of virtual self kind of thing so i never made a female toon. but recently i made a female elem and set her up to look like my girlfriend and named her my gf's name. my friend saw it and said im a homosexual because i made a girl toon. and it means i secretly want to be a girl. i def know for a fact its not true for me, but is it true for the other guys?

Most of my characters are male, but I did make my warrior female because the male warriors look a bit oafish for my liking, especially in Gladiator's armour. I'm finding it a little disturbing to be chatted up in game based on the fact that my avatar is attractive, though... Sometimes even telling them that I'm actually a man with a beard doesn't put them off.

I found funny that in the Nightfall CE behind the scenes DVD, one of the Anet devs said he plays girls to look at the butts too >_<

I have an even ratio of male and female characters. I pick gender based on armor, really. If I like the female armor better, I'll make it female, and vice versa.
It's really quite ridiculous the things people think when they see a man playing a female character.

Truthfully I did find it a bit disturbing when I started to play the game; all those fellows walking and running about as gals. But then, I looked into making a Dervish. Those guys are kind of ugly! I didn't make my Female character becuase I wanted to look at her behind all the time, I did it becuase I wanted a good looking character. the Male Dervishes all look kind of weird, and frankly, it seemed a shame to waste the opprotunity for such a good looking character. Now she's the only character I take to parties and such.
Also, I buy armor that covers them appropriately, none of that Elementalist undie armor for me!
And also, this may sound a bit weird, but...
Since the news about GW2 coming out, I'm kind of making an equal balance between my Male and Female characters. Sort of playing matchmaker so it makes sense that they have relatives in my GW2 game. Creepy, ain't it?

As a writer in my spare time, I look at it the same way I look at characters in a novel: characters.
I'm not playing myself (playing a game is enough for "getting away from reality"), I'm playing someone who, in my mind, I devise at least a small amount of backstory/personality for. So male, female, they are extensions of my psyche (in which all persons carry male and female traits), not the digital equivalent.

why's it weird to recreate my gf? she doesnt play or anything. and jus laughs at me when i say, oh im getting ectos tonight. so i made an asian female ele named Steph the nurse cus my gf name is steph and shes a nurse and i use her to farm ectos.

Although many of the female characters in the game are actually female (I get asked all the time if I am really a girl, *checking parts*...yeppers, I am a girl...) I know many guys that have made female characters...none of them are "gay". After many attempts at a male Rit, my boyfriend made a female. I asked him why, his response was "If I have to wear a dress, I might as well be a girl." Other male friends playing female characters agree that if they have to look at the back side of a character, they would rather look at a female butt. IMO people that throw the "gay" word around have their own issues...but that is a completely different topic

My reasons are going to be different from others. But my main one is because of the dance emote.
I have a female Ranger, War, Elm, Necro, Paragon, Dervish and mesmer.
I picked the female ranger for the way she holds the bow when in combat.
I really dislike the male dances for all of the other classes I mentioned.
Seriously, this is a fantasy world right? Do I really want to do the same dances in a virtual world as I do in real life?

I spend a good 40-120 hours/character. So the average amount of time I spend playing is worth the output of people thinking I'm really a female. Some of the dances are worth the output also .

A lot of young men are insecure about their own sexuality. The teenage years can be rough, and it somehow makes boys feel better about themselves if they can create a rigid set of rules that "prove" that they are what they say they are and stick to those rules. It's a classic defense mechanism that stems from inexperience. Hopefully they'll grow up someday and learn how silly that is.

the extension of self comment was interesting... I totally agree with it. I think that's what most girls do when they create characters. They will create characters with the idea that they are playing, a reality which is destroyed if they have a male toon.
Men on the other hand seem to distance themselves a little more from their gaming. They don't see the character as themselves but someone they're controlling, and if they'd prefer to look at a woman then by all means, go for it.

anyways, as a straight guy i like male character, because i feel a little strange playing a female. and the male armors are almost all nicer, and bigger/more visible. but i see where you guys are coming from wanting to watch a female toon, i just dont pay that much attention to my character's butt.

Almost all of my characters are female. I play this game so much, might as well be looking at something kinda hot while I'm running through Tyria/Cantha/Elona.

just as a test my friend and i made female toons to see how long until one of us got harrassed for being a chick toon or getting a cyber request/flirt.. we didn't even make it out of pre-searing. and in post we got to piken square before a flirt conversation started..

But I have been thinking of making a female necro after Anet did that April fools day gender change joke

I was planning to make a female warrior too but I have no more character slots so I'll have to wait!Anyways like most people have said before, I rather look at a females butt while I play rather than males so that's why I started to make female characters.

I have to admit I find that idea a bit weird too, but I don't think it makes you into any kind of superfreak. Now that I'm on European servers, I find that people are much more open to the concept of a male playing on a female character (among other things). Frankly, the average maturity of people on American Servers is very low, probably because of the higher number of younger players.

lol this thread made me smile and I'm not even have a coffee yet. One of my character is a female warrior, out of nine slots, the rest are guys. Why female warrior? cus the male counterpart look fat, giant bicep, jar head. So I made a female one and I enjoy looking at her behind from time to time.
All in all a guy (14-whatever age) would rather looks at boobs and butt while he's playing a game, look around from FF12 to Tomb Rider, you'll see what I mean. And if a person wants to play for the other team or play for both team, then its his/her choices. This is a free world (well almost).
As for me I like a woman and I like her real, thank you very much.
