Secondary Profession for a Ranger?
Silver Spangle
Hi I'm a bit of a newbie at Guild Wars.
I've been playing for a while as a ranger with some mesner skills. But I was wondering if you had any reccomendations for a secondary profession. I have seen a lot of people saying monk or elementalist for a ranger. What do you think?

Too many to decide from examples below
1. Ranger/Necromancer the touch ranger (touch skills from necro class mix well with expertise)
2. Ranger/Warrior the bunny thumper (hammer skills that keep your opponent on the ground mixed with increased attack speed)
3. Ranger/Monk (basic ranger but a resurrection spell)
4. Ranger/Paragon (Barraging Go for the eye’s Spammer)
5. Ranger/Ritualist (Splinter Barrager)
6. Ranger/Elementalist (conjure flame as an example to increase damage output)
Personally Ranger / Ritualist is my favorite for a big damage (Splinter Weapon Spell mixed with Barrage is really deadly in PVE)

Thanks for the advice. I think I will just have to experiment and see what works best.

My advice: pick up assorted skills from ALL secondaries. Flexibility is what the ranger is best at.
For solo adventuring a hard (re-useable) resurrection skill is nice, so monk (Rebirth, Resurrection, Restore Life, Resurrection Chant etc...), Ritualist (Flesh of My Flesh, Death Pact Signet, Lively Was Naomi etc...) or even Paragon (the Signet of Return- it's in the primary, but it'll still bring folks back to life, just make sure you use it when no enemies are in range, since it will give very little health and energy) can be handy. Ritualist is a really nice option, since Death Pact Signet is pretty strong in PvE and there are several skills that synergise well with rangering (Splinter Weapon, Brutal Weapon, Nightmare Weapon) and you get reduced spirit costs too.
I'd say start by picking up the skills that you commonly see from other professions, and gradually expand it so you can play the common builds dipping into other professions - conjure elements, judge's insight, splinter weapon, touching and so on. My ranger has over 1000 skill now, and is closing in on having every skill in game available - by no means necessary, but it's nice to be able to play anything.

Assuming you have all three campaigns
Monk, because Mending Touch combined with Troll and Natural Stride makes you invincible.

umm... I think echo mending still beats troll and natural stride, but admittedly it's close, lol.
Ranger assassin is even fun. The most often used templates for my ranger (hes got 8.5 million xp now) at least profession wise nowadays are
PVE: R/Rit, R/P, R/Mo, R/D(runner), R/X (yeah, beastmastery roxors especially in realm of torment)
PVP: (depends on format substantially)
R/W, R/Rt, R/Mo (heh mending touch ftw), R/N (I like mark of pain in AB on MM's - almost as much as splinter weapon), R/Mes(epidemic alone is worth it), R/A, R/X (yeah, beastmastery roxors in arenas too)

Ranger's Expertise skill can be applied to any class that uses Attack skills. There are some pretty mean R/A Exhaust/Interrupt/Deny builds out there. Seriously, though... whichever one you think can offer you the best synergy for your chosen Ranger skills/attributes should be the one to use. Don't force yourself to "stick with" a certain secondary profession.
Once you pay the 500g for a profession, or complete the quest for it (Prophecies), it's free to switch amongst them on your Skills/Attributes (hit K) interface.
Also... I thought that Ranger's Expertise only applied to a Ranger's Nature Rituals, and not a Ritualist's Binding Rituals. I could be wrong.

you are, it applies

It most definitely affects binding rituals. Unfortunately, rangers don't get the health boost (Spawning Power) that makes some of them worthwhile, but it can be handy to put 25 cost spirits down cheaply.

Sweet. I'm guessing that R/Rt is a popular "Spirit Spammer" combo, then? I'm fairly new to the world of Ritualists, having only recently bought factions.
