Guild Wars Community's lifespan
MonkeysAteMe
Hello, I am considering purchasing Guild Wars, but I am wary to buy this game so long after its release. What do you guys think is the projected lifespan of this game's online community? I would rather not buy a game and have the community disolve in a couple of months.
Also, which version do you suggest getting? I am leaning towards prophecies.
Thank you.

Well it certainly won't dissolve within the span of a few months, I can tell you! lol
There will be a final expansion coming out later this year, and after that it is almost another full year before we will start to think about GW2. I'd say that gives you plenty of time to go crazy.
I'd agree with Prophecies. It just makes more sense to start at the beginning.

This game will last a pretty long time. People still play it steadily and most people are excited for the expansion that is coming out in a couple of months.
GW1 might be ending within a year or two though. GW2 is coming out and most people are going to switch over to it.
Prophecies: good to start. Slow leverl and step by step instructions on how to play the game
Factions: easy to level. long "noob" island. Introduces Elite missions with 12 man parties.
Nightfall: Pretty good for begiiners. Heros to help you along the way. Best green weapons to farm (in my opinion).

I also only started playing a few weeks ago and I really think it's worth it. We've still got Eye of the North coming out in August I think (may be wrong) and then a long time before Guild Wars 2. Even with the release of GW 2 many players may stay with the original Guild Wars. Plus the price will probably fall which will lead to many new Guild Wars players.
For me, it's a nice way to get ready for Guild Wars 2.
I started with Nightfall which is the only campaign I have so far and I think it was a good choice. As Stiltzkin mentioned, it's a good campaign for beginners. The heroes help a lot. Plus find a nice friendly guild, which can be done easily from GW Guru. It's amazing how big a difference nice friendly people can make to a game.
I'd say go with Prophecies or Nightfall. This community will still last a long while and it's well worth the expense.

The community will be active for a long time from now, I think.
I see a lot of starting people and many people still enjoy the game.
Excisting players create new characters and play those.

all games are cool , and as for longevity , You ONLY buy the game 1ce , its not like your spending (au) $ 80 and then $15 - 20 per month and dying in a battle and having ppl steal your good items and armor 8)

The lack of a monthly fee really adds fire to GW's burning community.
Why, people still mod MARIO BROS. Essentially GW has plenty of life left. ANet says they will continue to support it "until there is no point in doing so any further". GW's fate is up to the people. If people remain loyal to it, it will live on.
I vote you get Prophecies. As the original, it is the downright best and easiest to get into. It also doesn't rush you through the early levels like Factions does, and has a pretty strong story. If you have a thing against traditional medieval stuff (mind that Factions = asian theme, Nightfall = african theme), go Nightfall. It adds "heroes", which are fully controllable computer party members, and is pretty good in general.

Heros are a BRILLIANT addition , especialy being able to customise them into what YOU want and even tell them WHEN to use them , instead of USLESS skills that some henchies seem to want to use , especialy at stupid times .. ie . you have 4 monks in your team and your hench warior uses his / her 1 and only rez sig , while the other monks are rezzing the fallen party member... {henchmen need brains}..

The guild wars' community lifespan is very close to it's end. When Fury and Warhammer 40K online come out will be the official time of its death.

Fury .... Another game you Buy and BUY and BUY and BUY and BUY and Buy and BUY and BUY and BUY and BUY and Buy and BUY and BUY and BUY and BUY and Buy and BUY and BUY and BUY and BUY and Buy and BUY and BUY and BUY and BUY and Buy and BUY and BUY and BUY and BUY and Buy and BUY and BUY and BUY and BUY and BUY .... I think you get the point . .. I prefer to buy a game 1ce ONLY .
Thomas.knbk
Yes I get your point.
Unfortunately (I mean that cause I think gw is a great game), it's not very important what you think. What the majority of the pvp community thinks is what makes or breaks that community. And sadly, the majority a)has already left or b)has announced their soon-to-come leaving.

Lol. Sorry Thomas, but the PvP community is a minority of the game. I really don't believe that they "control" anything. Its the 10 year old gamers who dance in Kamadon that are the majority of the population (unforunately).

@OP - everyone has an opinion. Here's mine.
1. GW community is going strong. The high GW forum memberships and postings show that.
2. GW is no where near it's end yet. It went retail two years ago and new people continue to buy the game(s) and enter the community.
3. People leaving? This happens with every game - You get bored; you want the latest; you get angry over a change, etc. But people keep coming back, as demonstrated in just this forum site. We have forum members who have deleted all their characters and uninstalled the game, only to come back again (some more than once).
With no monthly subscription, you have nothing to lose. A non-online game will cost as much and not last as long.

Ya PvP is definetly NOT the majority in Guild Wars.
As for which campaign to buy, definetely go with prophecies. Factions isn't a bad choice either, but Prophecies eases you into the game slower and teches you thing better. Nightfall is nice for the heroes but they aren't that useful until you have skills unlocked for them(fyi, heroes can use ANY skills you have unlocked on your account), therefore minimalizing their effectiveness when starting with Nightfall as your first campaign. Although, getting to areas where elites(good elites at that) are is a lot quicker in Nightfall(and Factions for that matter) than in prophecies.

Hell, I'm an avid PvPer myself, and I'm far from quitting the game. GW is different enough from the rest of the MMO market that it doesn't really need to worry about games stealing it's playerbase. WoW is the game that will likely take a severe hit from newer PvP oriented games.

I only pay for a game 1ce, not evrey month ...
Sir Green Aluminum
Were they top players because they were your friends? With a prize tournament I don't the "top" players would quit. But www.mmorpg.com rated guild wars as one of the most popular games (dependent on the people who visit their site) and I stopped playing for a while and went to other mmo's before, but always come back. I think guild wars killed other MMO's for me because I now hate grinding even though I used to play Lineage II! I won't mind the grinding in GW2 probably, I assume it'll be as easy to max lv as WoW if there is one like in GW2.
Conclusion: GW funz.

Correct, but if you bought the new campaign every time it came out, I think it whittled down to about 11-12 dollars per month. That was awhile go, and It's actually being made up now w/ the development of GW2 and GW:EN so it's probably at about 6 dollars per month you're paying right now, if you started when the game came out.
Still a Heck of A lot cheaper than WoW, so I'm happy. Anet also did a smart move because they made the market available to Younger players. If you think about it, any who is not old enough to use a credit card (I.E. Me) and wants to play an MMORPG. He looks at WoW and asks his parents if he could pay 15$ every month in order to play, but he doesn't make that much money, and his mom & pop won't pay for it. So he saves up and buys GW, Cheers!

lol avenge ... but also , its not a matter of being too young either , I dont believe in credit cards > I'll be usless with it , I'd spend and spend (mainly on new chars slots.) { I wish they'd make pay pal an option.} but even so if they charge for a game , then a monthly fee , thats messed up if you ask me ..
