Character Screen
savage vapor 33
Was just reading through riverside and noticed a "remember the good ol days thread," and thought how could Anet combine old with New?
If some of you remember the character selection screen housed your characters in front of a burning crackling fire, that i think signified the burning fire by the weaponsmith in ascalon. All of them would be present, no stupid boxes with just their faces. When you picked one they walked towards you, and it was pretty cool.
How about Anet brings that back, but adds a little bit more to it. Instead of a fire, its your guild hall, or somewhere else interesting. When you click your character of your choice, they either do a funny or any type of emote. /salute, /bow, /wave, /dance, or something interesting.
Your thoughts??

Good idea, however I would prefer being able to choose our own background in the character select scene, otherwise if some were forced to have the original, they would moan and groan. Good idea on the walk forward/emotes thing.

I remember the little encampment with the fire. I'd forgotten that your character ran towards the camera when selected. I do miss that one.
Having a selectable login would be nice. I think Anet may be more interested in keeping the current release splashed across that pane though

Everybody suggests it, and I'm always for it. I miss Ye Olde Prophecies screen!
The emote idea is good, too.

I would love to be able to choose which screen I used. Sadly, I came in right when Factions was launched, so I never saw the above mentioned display of firey-goodness. But boy it sure sounds nifty

Just before Nightfall came out (when they 'redecorated' the client Elona-style), I was personally both excited, but also a bit miffed. Why? Because I got into GW when Factions came out, so I was quite fond of being greeted by the 'Welcome to Cantha' tune and the Asian-esque backdrop. When this was changed without asking, the first thing that popped into my head was "Hey! Wouldn't a client with a campaign-specific background selector be sweetass!" I posted it on my guilds forum, they liked the idea also. I didn't pursue the idea further because I was always reading/hearing about complaints that anet doesn't listen to us...
But anyhoo, further on from that, I also thought that considering many people take character screenies on the select screen, it would be a great addition to be able to select different famous background scenes from each campaign, 'pose' your character/use emotes, select which armor they wear & which weapon they wield, show/hide their mask/helm/weapon/cape etc etc. So basically turn it into a mini photolab! Probably a dumb idea, but I thought 'd share it while the thought was alive... =o)
Like a few previous posters, I too missed out on all select screen versions prior to Factions, and would love to be able to have the option of experiencing those...

I haven't been around long enough in GW to have seen that interface (for me it was always the square boxes).
I do remember a very similar character selection screen in Diablo 2 however. That version wasn't for selecting ur character but for selected which class you were going to play. I remember how whne u selected a class the char would walk fwd and do their particular emote (warrior would walk and roar at you, sorc would step fwd and cast lightning over her head, etc.)
The version in GW sounds very similar to this and I would certainly enjoy something like this... it would add alot of flair to the character selection.

Except, instead of the traditional burning fire, we should have a different kind of screen depending on which campaign your character is in, and separate screens to access characters that are currently in a different campaign.

also /signed for the selectable backgrounds - would be nice to have one for each area of the game (e.g Ascalon, North/South Shiverpeaks, Istan, Kourna, Battle Isles etc)

Those were the best....the crackling fire....running towards....real homish...never got old....
But NOW theres just peoples heads in boxes that stand in front of a cave. Yeah....it sucks. I want to bring back the old days, the running, the crackling fires, the encampments....I LOVED THAT!

I missed the camp fire screen, as when I started in March last year they had the characters standing on a column in front of a light blue sea. A couple of days later they changed it to the darker blue sea with the whale that spouted, and I miss seeing that.
I would like it to be that when you select a character in one of the boxes at the bottom of the screen, the background and music changes to whatever campaign that character comes from. Alternatively, it changes to whatever the background and music was at the time when the character as created.

Unfortunately game development exists in a world where resources (including time) are limited and budgetted according to a process of expected benefits and opportunity costs. Something would only really stand to waste those resources on a function that works perfectly to expectations when there are other more pressing features and functionalities that require attention.
Nostalgia is fine, but putting it ahead of useful updates would be silly.

If, one day I start Guild Wars to see they made an option to change back to the camp, I'll cry out of happiness for sure. I really hope that GWEN will make some nostalgic changes, which would be logical since you also return to Tyria.
Btw, there have been so many topics about this, and everyone signs it every time. Arenanet people check here too, so why don't they change anything? I dont think it will be much of an effort, and many people will be happy with it. At least post a reply here for example.

All in all, it is certainly not a huge task, and would make so many people incredibly happy. If they can make up happy doing something so utterly simple I think it would be worth it.

This suggestion has been posted MULTIPLE times. Galie has even responded to it. The official a.net response? It is not technicially possible anymore. The character selection page has been updated repeated to include new features, as such, the old pages are not compatiable anymore (region selection link for GW betas in China, links to the GW store, ability to add access keys for multiple campaigns, having more then 4 characters on an account, etc). Again, the official explination by a.net as to why this can't be done is because the old log in page does NOT support the current features in the game.
Do some more research next time before assuming that "it would be really easy to do." This has been brought up on multiple occassions on this site before and the explination I have given has been put on most of them (in fact, one such post is less then a dozen posts down at the time of this writing).

I think it's a great idea and and i've got a great suggestion concerning the background:
i'm thinking of a kind of never ending battle in the background which your character is looking down uppon from a high point, for Tyrian chars it should be the Ascalonians defending the Great Northern Wall against the Charr,
for the Elonian chars maybe a battle against Corsairs/Kournans,
and for the Canthans, a battle against the Afflicted. But your side should ALWAYS be defending.

I just was thinking about that the other day.
And i wouldn't mind either if they would let you put in order your characters by age, the oldest first of course (something that i find really logic by i guess they don't)

Savage, I did not mean that there are multiple responses by a.net (they have better things to do then read these forums all day). What I mean is, this has been suggested MULTIPLE times and once Gaile officially responded to it. I've spent the last 15 miniutes trying to find that post, but since I'm on 56k, search is pretty dang slow. Like, its taken my 4 miniutes just to load one search page. Since I don't know wheter the post I'm looking for called it a login page, log in page, log-in page, character screen, character selection screen, loading screen, start page, start screen, sign in screen, etc I have a lot of search variations to run. As soon as I find it, I'll post it.
Please do not be so quick to dismiss a forum regular just because you don't want to believe him.
*forget it, I'm sure some forum regulars who read Galie's post will agree with me though, if they even bother to read this except to scream "use search noob" and close this thread*
