I don't know how to ask arena.net directly so I posted this question here. It's about this new contest and I saw this rule:

============================
Eligibility (location): Entries will be accepted from residents of North America, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macau. (US Exceptions: the State of Rhode Island, Guam, Puerto Rico, U.S. territories, military installations and commonwealths. Canadian Exceptions: Quebec.) (Canadian residents will be required to answer an additional mathematical question in order to claim their prize.)
============================

I am from the Philippines and I think Philippines has more guildwars player compared to Taiwan but I just wondered why can't we enter this contest? Why is it restricted to those country only?

Secondly. What the heck is this?
"Canadian residents will be required to answer an additional mathematical question in order to claim their prize" - ROTFL

Asked same when there was Design a Weapon contest - it's something about canadian laws. I think these kind of stuff are considered in Canada as "lucky" games - not skill games -> you need to answer (simple) question in order to claim prize.

I tried to find info about it from wikipedia but my limited english didn't help me at all.

wtf lmao

I'm a Canadian in Quebec, and I'm tired of seeing Quebec left out. But what's with the math question? We don't all live in igloos drinking beer with polar bears and pet beavers.....

in Canada, only the gov't is allowed to have contests and pure luck for a prize, anyone else must make it into a game of skill and a fairly simple math question makes it just that.

From Return to Tyria Sweepstakes:
Quote:
5. ELIGIBILITY: This sweepstakes is open only to legal residents of the 50 United States, the District of Columbia and Canada, 13 years of age or older at the time of entry. Void in Guam, Puerto Rico, U.S. territories, military installations and commonwealths, the Province of Quebec and where prohibited by law. Employees of ArenaNet, Inc., and anyone working on the product, project or promotion, their respective parents companies, subsidiaries, advertising and promotional agencies and the immediate family members (parents, spouse, siblings, children) or anyone who lives in the same household of each (whether related or not) are not eligible. Entrants agree to be bound by the terms of these Official Rules and by the decisions of the judges, which are final and binding on all matters pertaining to this promotion.
Well... reading between the lines... Philippines isn't included in their eligibles list. Sad to say, I've wasted 3 CEs supporting the game and I'll still prolly buy the 4th CE but I can't join any of the events they run. Bad customer relations. =..=

It's not bad customer relations.

The Phillippines probably has some stupid law that makes it unfeasible to allow entrants from the country. Quebec has the same problem. Not to mention the stupid math question thing for Canadians.

Yeah, complain about your countries' laws, not a.net.

I am a Law Graduate and I don't see any law about internet contests. Maybe A.Net doesn't know that a country named Philippines even exist.

Well other than considering law in the matter, some other factors for leaving out the other areas would be the prize's shipping and handling, the liscence/permit for operating the sweepstakes on a global area. Those were some I got to figure out when it comes to running events which would require exchange. I'm sure everyone's familiar with TV programs like "The Price is Right" and "Wheel of Fortune".

A.net would prolly be booting the bill for the shipping and handling of every single prize out to every single winner and perhaps that may be the issue.

But since they said that "Any expenses not explicitly listed herein, including any applicable tax on the prize is the sole responsibility of the winner." Claiming the prize would and will be depending on what processes the winner will have to endure for himself.

Let's put it this way, say, I won the sweepstakes, I'm from Philippines, since a.net said I'd be the one to boot the additional bills and charges, it'd be up to me to provide those or I won't be able to claim my package. But since I can put up with the additional charges and expenses, I can prolly claim my prize. What chances does 1 have over 20,000+ or more entries right?

The good thing about opening it to all possible subscribers is that they don't get to feel left out and they get a fair shot on the events like everyone else. Even if its a 1 in a million shot chance, right?

I sent an enrty in for the Brand the Boss contest earlier today, but on reading this post went to check that UK entries were acceptable (which they are).

Anyway, on reading the rules thoroughly this time, I saw that:

1) You can only submit ONE monster name.
2) You must have the subject of your e-mail as "Brand the Bosses 2007 Contest"

I failed on both those counts, so my entry will be disqualified.

I just sent a second entry asking that they ignore my first, but suspect that I have blown my chances with this before I even start! LOL

That will teach me to read all the rules properly I guess.

So, if you are going to enter this competition, make sure that unlike me, you read all the rules first and dont submit more than one name.
