Good evening folks. A friend of mine's husband is deployed and won't be back for about 8 more months, and his wife wants to play her own account on GW..I seen to remember a "add another user" tab when the game was installed. Is it possible for her to add her own account on the same computer, I realize she will probably have to "buy" the new key..but how would she go about doing it? if it's even possible, she doesn't have to have a completely different machine does she? Anyway, thanks for the help!

buy game and set up new account under different email address.

after installing copy that huge GW file from the present account replacing the installed file to save a ton of download updates time.

if hubby has a lappy they can play together or chat as someone i know who just back did.

hope this helps.

the account is server side so you can play on any pc it is installed

Copying files, installing more then one copy wtf?

1. If she already has an account, at the login screen; replace the e-mail adress of her husbands account with hers and login.

2. Otherwise she can click on "create new account..." and follow the procedure there. After the account has been setup, do as per 1.

Edit: alternatively; it's possible to create a shortcut, specifically for her account as wel as the regular one ( which would be her husbands) add the parameters -email=<[email protected]> -password=<passwordhere>
For details on the parameters, I think those are stickied someplace...found 'em
edit: corrected the parameters to contain "=" as per the link above

that is to save time if another pc is used.

disregard if the same pc is used

you cant replace one email with one in use..........sheesh

she wants her own account so obviously she does not have one

and if she has an account why should she log into her husbands?

you need an unused new key to set up an account

as per 1 see above why that is impossible

and they stopped using *-email* command years ago

I think the OP was pretty clear the same machine was to be used.

At the login screen where it says "Account Name" the field contains the email adress for the account you're trying to login to. Change this field to read the email adress for any other account you'd like to log in to.
Surely you're not suggesting that people with multiple account have to have multiple installed copies of GW? because this is blatantly untrue.

No shit, sherlock... err I mean: correct, that is true. Should the person in question desire her own account, and apparently this is so, she'd have to get a new unused key. The OP realizes this as well.

Oh Really? Are you sure? Maybe my machine has it's date set to years ago then, because as of 3 minutes ago this still works...

ny misunderstanding there as i thought you were refering to changing the account email not just logging in.

as i have multiple accounts i use a shortcuts for each and obviously 1 copy of data.

no problem with this

i will have to check on *-email=* as many people have reported it deactivated since the early days.

if reactivated i thank you for the info as changing my 24 character alpha/numeric at my isp is a pain when i swap.

And the only need to have 2 copies installed on the comp is to run dual accounts on the same comp.

i am still getting the same invalid message the later posters to that thread reported.
if you are using the -email= command to go between different accounts how are you doing it as a lot of people would benefit by knowing.

I'll try to explain it as clearly as I can...

* My Dad has an account on his computer with 3 versions of Guild Wars.

* I want to create a separate account for myself on his computer, b/c I just got Prophecies.

* Obviously, he'd be pretty... displeased... if his account got deleted and he lost all his stuff.

If I just go to Add Account in his already installed version of Guild Wars (at the log in screen), will I be able to have my own account (with 4 character slots) and he'll be able to keep all of his versions on his account? Please help. All of these answers are complicated and confusing, and I don't want to make a really bad mistake...

Seems I owe you an apology here. I checked my shortcut and found out I (quite emberassingly) made a typo in my e-mail adress I have only one account, and what confounds me is that on one machine (the one I tried this one) my client actually inserts the (correct) email adress/account name instead of whatever i put behind the "email=" parameter. Even when the "remember my account name" box isn't checked?! On my other machine I was unable to recreate this behaviour e.g. the Account name field is empty if "remember my..." isn't checked and I get the same "invalid..." eror message you say you recieve. So In the end I guess the "email=" thing doesn't work. I do find it strange that on one machine my account name seems to be stored somewhere (in gw.dat?) and not on the other...

I think the answers provided above are about as clear and concise as they get... Why don't you ask your dad to help you setup your account? With all three chapters under his belt this should prove a trivial task for him

Wtf, you two are making it much more complicated than it has to be.

First off: If you want two separate accounts, with Different characters. Then you need to have two different access keys & Emails.

Is true as long as you own 2 DIFFERENT Access Keys and Emails.

Second off: You definitely don't need to install the game twice in order to play two different accounts on the same computer. The only reason for two install, would be to run dual accounts on the same computer, as already stated:

To clear up the mud of this thread:

1. YES, you can start a second account on a computer that already has an account on it. The reason is that all of the account information is preserved server side. So creating an account on your dad's computer will not affect his account in any way.

2. When you CREATE your new account, you will need to use a different e-mail address than the existing account. (the email address is the account name.)

3. You do NOT need to have 2 copies of GW loaded on to the same computer. All you have to do is log in using your e-mail & PW and viola! you'll be playing on your account. You can also access your account using any computer that has GW on it. (because all of the account specific stuff is server side)

My brother has 2 accounts on his computer (pre slot purchase option), and only 1 copy of GW on it. when I go to visit, I can access my account and play to my heart's content on his computer.

cd keys aren't connected to the installation, just to the account so no problems with playing on the same computer. were you worried about issues from other games that tied installation to cd keys (such as d2 or starcraft)? you'll have no worries of that kind here. heh i use my 2 computers to access my 7 accounts.

Playing GW is just like using the forums. Once GW has been installed on the computer once, anyone with an account can use it. Every user has their own password and email (username) that connects to their own account (their own characters, items, progress in game, etc). It's like logging into the forums here - you log in with your own password and username, post something, check your PM, whatever, and log out when you're not using it anymore. Then your friend logs in with their own account from the same computer and posts stuff on the forums without touching the previous person's account at all.

There is no need to re-install the game, or worry that you'll erase another account by making one of your own. The GW client can even be downloaded from their website for free. All that matters is that you make your own account by using your own account key, email and password.

As per the guildwiki game updates page The -email command was put back in. My proposed method of making specific shortcuts to quickly access different accounts now actually works

all she needs is another key.
I play on my hubbys computer sometimes (like when mine died last weekend) and all I do is change the email ....everything else is already there since I already have a very active account.....
so op just get another copy...put in a different email address than your spouse uses (this may be difficult if you have all the email for both of you sent to the same email addy....not sure how they work that then)
and when my brother in law broke his one computer he had gw on another so he was able to play......its all linked to the email address. As long as the client exists on the other computer you can play it on whichever computer you wish (like was mentioned if your hubby has a laptop he can load the disk he has on it and play overseas with you....its great fun to play gw together!)
