Block ability to test UNID'd weapons (fix the bug)
Masseur
Equiping an UNID'd item should only be for viewing skin, it should not allow players to determine what mods, etc... are on the weapon before it's ID'd. There is a reason they are hiding it and making you use an ID kit to see the full capabilities of the item.
The only part of an UNID'd weapon a player should be able to tell is what is shown on the screen, req and dmg. Any inherent dmg mods, HP or other mods or inscriptions should not be able to be determined by equiping the item (and testing). So if the item has a HP+30 mod and I equip it, my HP shouldn't go up while it's UNID'd. Otherwise there is no purpose of ID'ing a weapon (purpose of Identifying is to make known what all the properties are), since it can be determined while it's still UNID'd.
This is just common sense and should be considered a bug that it allows you to know what the weapon is before ID'ing it. It also allows people to "scam" less knowledgeable players by selling an UNID'd item knowing it's crap, but leading them to believe it might be very nice. By "scam", I mean mislead intentionally.

This is something that's bugged me for a long time, and I really hope it gets fixed.

While I completely agree with you on the scamming issue, from a "realistic" (as realistic as the term can be used in a fantasy game) whether I _personally_ know the capabilities of an item or not, it would still work the same way.
After all, we are dealing with an "identification kit" not an "awakening kit" or some other sort of magical "on" switch for the item. An item still falls at a certain rate whether I can calculate its acceleration due to gravity or not.
But what about the scammers you say? Simple. Don't buy unidentified weapons. Unless of course you're trying to buy yourself the Wisdom title, and even then, go out and earn it, there are so many ways to get golds now.

this way the wisdom title will not be as easy to get (unids will cost more)

There is a simple solution to this that doesn't involve making mods "inactive". Just stop people from equipping unidentified items. If you're worried about freaking out RPers or something, just say "You can't equip the item because there is a chance it may be cursed." Simple, effective, and solves the problem.

There is really no reason to buy unid weapons unless you are going to a title, and it doesn't even really matter then.
/agree with Matter's post.

The only reason there is to buy an item that is not IDed is to gain points for the Wisdom title. If you wanted a sword with 15^50, and bought one that was unIDed, why should the sword have any better chance to have it? Just because the seller may have run tests to determine it was +5 energy, or 15^stance, doesn't mean you have a reason to complain as a buyer.
Damage mod is the hardest to determine however, and the easy parts to figure out are easy to replace. Only issue I see a problem with is unIDed armor. Salvage a gold armor and have it survive. You now have an unIDed armor and unIDed rune. That is 2 points on the Wisdom title for you, butfor scammers, it is money. They then sell the armor (with no rune) and the buyer gets nothing out of it. Sure, they get their point towards Wisdom title, but no rune. Granted, they wouldn't know what rune they would get, but if they find a Superior Vigor or Death, they make some money.
I simply don't buy unIDed stuff, and don't see why people should. Only titles seekers should be doing so, and they know their risks.

no real need to fix it really, why buy unid exept for the title? But making unid weaps uneqipable would fix it im sure.

You buy UNID'd items for the chance at getting a very nice item for much less than you would otherwise, title is secondary to most people. The seller is hoping you'll spend more on the chance at getting a better item. They might make more than if they ID it and it's not very good and then have to merchant it or sell for next to nothing.
I'm speaking of the general population of the game, not the title people and such.
But again, the point is, why are they UNID'd at all if you can see through that (to a point)? Why then not just drop ID'd already if you are not going to make it TRUELY UNID'd (not identifiable).

yah, I'm sure most people don't buy un-ided items for the sake of having a chance at getting a rare perfect item.. if they do, they're dumb or havent played the game much at all.
Every person u see spamming has tested mods on shields and weapons. The only reason people buy un-ided items is for the title.
IF you couldnt check them before selling then you'd see bunch of people spamming outrageous prices for unided items.

fix the bug?
i was going to type out a long paragraph explaining how ridiculous this is, but i cant be arsed, its not a bug, it can be used to scam, but to be honest who actually buys stuff unid unless theyre going for the wisdom title; in which case they dont give a shit about the item they just want the number to count.

From all the off topic posts, I can see it's hard to comprehend the concept. So it's up to the developers to either do something with this suggestion or not. Titles of course have nothing to do with the issue.
The issue boils down to why have UNID'd weapons if you can get around it? Simple, nothing further. Either make them so they are truely unidentifiable or don't have UNID'd weapons anymore. But that's logic, can't always have that I suppose.

why have them if you dont have to id them hum... idk do you want to spend 6 hours finding out if its 15^50 or 15 vs hexed foes..... i dont so i just id them.
iding is important cause its easy enough to find out what they do. if you want to spend all that time finding out what it does more power to ya but most of use dont. so this is not an issue....
in fact i would be ticked off if they did change this cause then all your doing is narrowing options and making the game way to liner to be fun to play...

It's a bit too late for this now... The prices on most items are already destroyed. The market is down... Ecto is practically worthless... A Dwarwen Axe with 15^50 can be bought for 100k+20ecto or lower....I cant sell a perfect req 11 Mursaat hammer for more than 70k, when it's "real" price always was at least double that.... Need I say more?
Even if what you want was done, it would no longer make any big difference.
Most importantly, I don't think it can be done at all since they'd pretty much have to redo half of the game code to stop the testing of items.
I think it's good that you can test items because selling unided junk is a scam. And anyone who buys unided crap is a noob unless they are doing it for wisdom title. I dont sell unided crap anymore, but when I did, every time I sold something unided, I told my buyer he was a nub, so that he feels stupid, and angry. He will then learn his lesson and there's a good chance he wont buy unided crap again. (making the guild wars community a better place, one less nub at a time)

if you find someone selling mass unids at a time, many of them don't bother taking the time to test as that would just slow them down too much.

If I buy UNID's it would be for title only. And if you *really really* think you can get nice items this way.. buy them UNID and test them youself, then sell the unwanted ones to someone who just cares about title. Win win.
Masseur
Well, you all know that items can be tested. And you all only buy UNID's for the title. But I'm talking about the general population of the game, they don't know it can be done, they buy them for the possibility of getting a good item for a cheap price. So it doesn't matter that they are ignorant to what is being done or anything else that has been said in here. I'm just wondering why is there such a think as UNID'd weapons if they aren't really UNID'd. If it was truely UNID'd, then if it was a sword and you see it saying req 9 and 11-22 dmg, when you equip it, that is all that you can see. It gives that type of dmg when hitting things, it wouldn't up your HP if it did secretly have a HP+ mod on it, etc... Defeats the whole purpose of being UNID'd.
So talk about titles and such are meaningless to this discussion, just wondering if we can block anything that isn't shown on the screen or block the ability of equiping UNID'd weapons, that's all. Discussions other than that are off topic and are counter productive.

it'll work for me either way as if they change it where you can't test, unid prices will go up. if they don't, well it'll be how it is now so its fine.
and for my previous statement, it does take a long time to find good items. when i was buying unids for the title i would probably get a good item or a rare skin that was inscribable or perfect stats every 50-75 unids or so.

Not being able to see/use items because they're UNID is a bit flawed. It's like having an unknown liquid.. drink it and risk getting poisoned even though it was UNID, while you could still by trial/error or other means figure out what it would be.
Anyway, Enko is right. If you couldn't equip or test UNID items, prices would go up so it would be ok anyway.

I've played the game since 1 month after it came out and I had no idea you could test rares beforehand. I also don't think everyone spamming to sell has tested the items as i *have* gotten perfect fortitude and energy mods on unids before.
