A quick fix for factions
Shriketalon
So, you've saved the empire from Shiro. Everyone hails your valor, toasts your name, and generally thinks you are awesome. The Imperials celebrate your victory, even the Kurzicks and Luxons greet you as one of their own.
Then, one morning, you're touring the countryside, basking in that post-saving-the-empire glow. Slaying the last remains of the afflicted in a random province, you step into Harvest Temple for a quick merchant munch. You greet Martinus, ask to see his wares, to which he turns a harsh eye and speaks:
"If you're not a friend of the Luxon Armada, I have nothing to say to you."
"But, um, Elder Rhea said I could fight with you whenever I wished, and was welcome here. You know, for slaying Shiro?"
"Don't care. Bugger off."
........Yep, that's hero worship.
My suggestion is simple. Once a character completes Factions, he or she will no longer have to deal with the annoyance that is NPC blockout due to opposed faction. As it stands, if you have even a single point of Kurzick faction greater than Luxon, or vice versa, an entire region closes its merchant stalls, skill training dojos, and smithies. This means you have to warp to a friendlier location, sell your goods there, return to the previous outpost, then reconfigure your team, because all your henchies were dumped in the process.
It's not an incredible bother. But considering that it is merely an annoyance, there doesn't seem to be a reason to keep it around.
Thoughts?

Sounds good. Maybe require you to have a minimum separation level (eg if the separation level is 4k and you have 10k kurzick faction, you need at least 6k luxon faction for them to speak with you).

@bilateralrope: that bypasses the point of the faction system
However, after completing Factions you should be able to sell to Kurzick or Luxon

Yeah, I have to say that the NPCs in Factions are very rude. I wouldn't mind that changing a bit.

It's pretty annoying to have their petty feud still going on even though they did start getting along at the end of the game.

Factions works perfectly fine as it is.
If you have a problem with not being able to talk with one side because you chose the other side that's your problem.
Their feud runs long and deep, and I doubt the truce upon Shiro's death held for more than a few weeks, maybe only even long enough for the hangovers to wear off after the grand celebrations and arms to be picked up again.

I say we just kill the NPCS and steal the crap we need. They'll live.

/signed can't see the point in having the factions barrier after u finished the game.
Winterclaw
If you save cantha, including both sides of the dispute, they both should at least accept you. This could also give rise to a SF-style update where the player can do some quests to start to mend the ties between kurzicks and luxons.

Programatically, all they have to look for is if that char recieved an amulet of the mists from that endgame NPC. An alt solution would be look to see if that person has access to HM, but you can get that if you beat the game with only one char so that wouldn't be a perfect solution unless you wanted to reward people who've beat the game once.

I mean, wasn't that the whole point of the Factions storyline? Two feuding sides coming together to beat evil? If we've teamed to fight, we should at least get the courtesy of not being refused by merchants etc...

On a tangent overall, it would be nice if some aspects, even minor ones like outlined here, of the various campaigns recognized those who have completed the game (it might check on Protector for said campaign). That might be some changes/additions to what NPCs say, the aforementioned acceptance of the faction barrier, and/or a special area or set of post-campaign quests. It'd feel a bit more immersive.

It isn't so bad when you want to sell, just use GH. The problem is when you want to buy. Luxon/Kurzick keys, skills, etc.
Skills makes me the most irritated though. If the GH trainer isn't going to have useful skills to buy, then the "Ember Light Camp" of Cantha ought not to be subject to change of sides.

But the important luxon/kurzick only things should be kept exclusive to your true side. So thinks like Jade, Amber, Passage Scrolls, etc, are still locked to your true faction.

1) If it's a green drop weekend, i'd like the liberty to go for any green in the game, not just the one on "my side".
2) If a friend needs help on a mission or series of quests on the side i'm not fractioned with (by 3 pts), why should I have to leave the party at every outpost? I am a Protector of Cantha for dwayna's sake! Not a Protector of Side A/B.

At least give access to the basics, Storage and Merchant.

I'll just move the final trainer to Raisu Palace, where it should be.
And make the 'Alliegance titles' save you the trouble, once you max one alliegance title, NPCs of that title won't check your faction anymore...
Or maybe the farther from Harvest temple you are, the more level of each alliegance you need, so mission will require max, harvest temple will require the first tier, cities would require the penultimate one, etc...

/signed. I think it would be good, i find the faction barriers rather comical, the fact that you can bribe a luxon shrine. "Will 50 gold smooth things over, even though without me having killed Shiro you wouldn't be alive?"

factions points are broken anyway. Instead of the rudeness they could have just jacked up the prices on you. Which would make sence. But after you slay shiro you should walk up and they say "HEY ITS BOB! BOB KILLED SHIRO (and he takes enzite )How can I help you Bob?" Not "I will call the gaurds"
You know what i just whipped a giant dragon and shiros ass bring your punk ass gaurds......erm sorry.

the luxon/kurzick npc blockout was pretty damn stupid to begin with, but this is the least they could do.

This also blows for those who may like to craft armor designed by the 'opposing' side. Like many have said, we beat Shiro and saved BOTH sides asses, so they should BOTH accept us. We're not asking for Luxons and Kurzicks to forget their squabble and get along, we just want them to accept us PLAYERS that have defeated Shiro for them. Ungrateful sods... =oP

i'm quite tired of the ongoing feud as well, after i worked so hard to unite them! (8 times even!) i think i've earned the right to speak to a luxon merchant already.

I killed shiro for you, you better talk to me, and you better let me buy stuff from you, you ungrateful merchant and skill trader NPCs! You too, shrine priests, turn on that shrine for me, I killed shiro for you, and now I'm killing the monsters that are running around bothering you guys! Can a hero get some appreciation? XD
If ANet can tell when we've beaten the game on one character for our account to activate hard mode, that means they can tell which character beat the game, and therefore know whether or not any given character has beaten the game. I think the NPCs should be grateful to each character that has killed shiro and kept them all from getting killed by the plague, and they should let that character interact with the NPCs regardless of how many faction points with them we do or do not have at the moment.
