For a stranger, I will ask for the money back of the key/pick, and to identify the item if it's a gold. I wouldn't keep the item though regardless what the stat would be.

To sum up, I feel no need to be nice, but I try to be honorable. I am not charity, I am not giving out any freebies or providing services for free, though I wouldn't cheat or exploit others either.

First, my merchant sense wouldn't tingle, my "oh man, I need to tell them" sense would tingle. Then I tell them, not to be a hero, but because I hate scammers and I especially hate scammers that take advantage of new people.

After my first trip to Pre-Searing Ascalon and visiting a Dye trader, I spent many a time with another character back in Pre doing this very thing, and even implored Anet to update Pre with a valid Dye trader to avoid the scams.
