Is it worth it to be nice?

I am usually polite, but by no means nice. Every once in a while, I meet someone pretty cool, through standard gameplay, but by default, I more or less hate everyone, and regard them as idiots. I am seldom wrong.

About like me, except I gave up on being polite because it just gets stepped on.

This is the only possible answer to that pseudointellectual babble. Thank you. I was just about to make the mistake of putting thought behind a reply to that mess.


Now, I shall contribute my thoughts to this thread. For the sake of everyone else's sanity, I'll have to avoid writing a several-page essay, here. Bear with me if my post is not clear.

Now, it's true that you should not be nice and expect anything in return. But if you ask me, you also shouldn't go out of your way to be nice. You cannot be nice at all times, and you should not make sacrifices to be nice. If you are, then yes, people are going to take advantage of that. The only real measure of kindness that I see is how many opportunities you take to share your excess wealth or spare time. If you have extra gold, it's great to give to the needy. You're not going to miss it. That is a gesture of kindness. If you idle away these opportunities, then that is a waste. If you have the spare time that you do not feel like spending on yourself, then be progressive! Use that to help someone else.

Conversely, you do not need opportunities to be rude or hurtful. It can happen at any time, really. And it really does happen far too often. All it takes is... Willingness to harm others, I suppose? Lacking any remorse? I'm not even sure what you need to be one of these people. I honestly cannot even begin to imagine what they're thinking. I hate to throw around insults, so I shall not press the issue farther.
The point is, rude people disgust me. They just seem to go out of their way to make life miserable for others. It reminds me of a post I once read where someone was angry at his girlfriend because she yelled at him. What for? He spit his gum into a fountain (coin-tossing, not drinking) at a mall. I mean, what the Hell was going through that guy's head? What suddenly possessed him to do that? Why would HE be angry because his girlfriend was offended at HIS disregard for... Argh, God knows what. Gah.

Now I have something to reiterate. It's true that you shouldn't be nice to expect something in return. But as an added thought, you also shouldn't be rude and not expect consequences for your actions.

That is the problem with the internet, there is no chance of consequences. Called someone the worst possible name you could? Put them on ignore, and guess what? No consequences. Yelled at your team and ragequit during the mission? Set status to Do Not Disturb, no consequences! Not pay someone for a run? Who cares, what are they going to do? Tell their friends?

There is no consequence to being rude and obnoxious.

That being said, I try not to be mean, but I tend to be sarcastic and cynical when I give help. Thats my way of giving help and advice
Sometimes I will go to nooby land and hand out a few free items and a few thousand gold. The problem with this though, is you do not know who is lying and acting new and who is actually new.

One thing that really ticks me off though is when I am helping someone with a mission and they are drawing on the map and telling me where to go. That quickly sends me into the furious state.

I suppose I didn't get to that point. Something else I would have brought up. Ah, well, thank you for bringing that up. It's already well past midnight, and today has been my first day of nothing but thankless Monking through impossible odds, 60% Death Penalties and needless Tyrian bonuses. My brain has turned to mush for the time being.

I play with PuGs alot, and tho things usually start out business, if you have a mature attitude and are calm in the face of adversity, almost all people of various levels of maturity will start to warm up to you.

I gift is not a gift when you add expectations.

The greatest reward for giving is feeling good about yourself. But you have to set limits. It is in no way required of you to give anything to anybody. My advice though is to give to people who are not asking.
To me people who ask for material things in-game are not worthy of receiving a gift. They are beggars because they are lazy and don't have the patience to earn the sword or whatever it is they want.

Give to those who don't expect it. If they want to sell it then you still helped them just in an indirect way.

No, just ignore the squealing 14-year-olds who can't be bothered to go out and earn it. Just give randomly when you feel like giving...I usually look for guildless characters btw.

There is nothing wrong with saying no sometimes, and that isn't being mean, just open and honest. Still, being nice to other players is something worth doing, and having the patience required sometimes makes it a sacrifice, but it also makes you a better person so the gain is worth the effort.

ill keep it simple, no. and if someone is being overly nice, theyre probably some type of online predator/pedophile.

When talking to someone for the first time it would be advised not to expect anyone with any amount of gray mass, this way youl never get disapointed. Its easier to first observe, then decide for yourself if your going to give it a shot at a conversation.

I'm always giving stuff away that I don't want or need(mostly in Kamadan) and I won't stop, live AND PLAY by example.

I take offense with your comment and all who do good things in game should also. I feel sad that you feel that way as it is a very jaded view of people as whole.

I want your friend! lol not because of her items, I have more junk than I already need, just because the person sounds like a real genuine nice person and fun to play with. Kudos to her.

But on the topic, I've stopped being genourous on online games as I just see majority if not most everyone looking after one thing, and thats themselves.

I'd say yes, it is worth it.

However, don't be too nice, you may look like an easy mark.

I've been nice to many people, and I've given about 5k, several free runs, several helps on missions and quests. End result...

2 very good friends, many appreciative complements, 1 green item (Yakslaper - way back before Factions).

From time to time, I'd chat with some of my new friends and we'd help each other out on missions or quests. Often we'd just chat about our days. The idea of playing GW is to get to know other people and interact. Henchies and Heros are there in case there is no one else around. Sometimes it is easier to hench, but being nice to others can net you some very good gains.

Yes, it is MORE than worth it - being nice is a foundation of a civil society. There is no reason for us NOT to be nice, other than our own intolerance.

Yes it is worth it to be nice. I would not have given him anything of value though. And he's not getting 70K for that weapon. If somebody payed 70K for that they are foolish. PMed you that price just to tick you off. Some 12 year olds just get there jollies out of pissing people off. It will always be this way. 12 year olds are very brave online cause they know they can get away with whatever they say cause they are not going to get a physical ass kicking.

If it brings peace to your soul, more power to you, but I am not accomplishing anything by being nice to random people on the internet.

I often give out mods and weps that i know i'm not going to use. but when i do i give them to guildies or to XXXXX under lvl XX. that way they aren't wasted by being merched and maybe someone can get something that will help them out in the early game.

this has only really backfired on me once.........i gave out free to a warrior under lvl 5 ebon sword hilt. guy came and got it then 2 seconds later was trying to sell it for 1k. i was extremely ticked off and he almost ruined it for everyone by being a greedy little piggy. but most ppl seem to really appreciate it so i still have giveaways at random times. just not as often now.

in response to OP yes it is worth it, because when i needed it someone helped me out and so it is worth it when you need it too.

I'm nice to people. I don't give freebies though. I'll sell things at a standard price, and if the person is polite or if I don't mind them I'll give em a discount. I'll help new players do some quests and give some advice. I don't expect anything in return, though in more than a few cases I'll get a PM from somebedy a month later thanking, and thats awesome.

Hell I gave a guildy a perfect sundering bow. He loved it and I even saw him using it still months later.


Of course if you give some random something dont expect much from it, I usually get to know someone before I do that.

I'll help most people with information. That, at least, is free. But for me to give my wealth to a stranger? It's rare. I'm far more likely to give my rare swords to friends that NEED it rather than some stranger who WANTS it. I don't help because I expect them to repay me. Personally, I'd rather give them their help and never hear from them again.

Is it worth it to help a stranger? In what sense? If you're expecting to have them in your debt, don't count on it. If you're expecting their sincere gratitude, don't count on that either. People help people that GENUINELY need help because they want to. Not to rub it in their faces. If you feel better about yourself for helping them, more power to you.

It's rarely worth the time of day giving stuff away because people are going to be using different stuff in a week anyway I find.

My two cents, if you* decide to be nice to people, be nice to them, the events that follows which may or may not happen after you are nice to them should not be taken into consideration. if you give something worth 100k to people, if they can sell it and get a 100k and consequently getting a very nice armor because you gave them something worth 100k, you should be happy that you help them get that armor, note you may or may not know it but you've made someone very happy i would think.

it is you*, and you only can decide to be nice to your fellow GW players or you want GW to be fill with unfriendliness.

*not indicating anyone by "you" just generally speaking.

Personally I'll help with any mission. I particularly like taking my Dervish into the Ascalon missions and helping people destroy them. It tickles me to see the mass damage on the weak enemies and I look like a god to new players,LoL. Now as far as loot goes I keep all the good skins, now if I find a low req, max damage weapon that is in a common skin I'll give it away in a heart beat even if it has +30 HP 15^50 and 20/20. The common skin won't give me enough money to even make it worthwhile to try to trade and the upgrades aren't worth salvaging most of the time.
