No. There is a point to it. If a quest or mission is difficult, you can get someone to do it for you for a fee. If it takes a long time, or it's too difficult to get to a certain town/outpost, getting a run to the place would be useful.
For instance, many people do "desert tours" and run your character to each location, thus, all you have to do is beat the missions instead of trekking around unlocking everything.

First time through Prophecies you should play all the missions. But after you have been through the game a couple of times, you may find yourself wanting to skip certain parts of the game with a new character.
