You should of skipped Factions and gone straight to Nightfall (for the heroes, and it's just better), but maybe it was on sale, or at the Flea Market. But anyway...

As you now know, Assassin and Ritualist are the 2 new classes in Factions.

Assassins, for reasons that aren't quite clear, got a reputation for dieing too often and being less effective (in PvE - i dunno bout PvP). Some skill changes since then have made the Assassin better, but you may still have problems getting into PUGs as one. But it's a fun Hack'n'slash class like a Warrior (but NOT a tank)

Ritualists have a variety of different builds which concentrate on different attributes and skill sets. You should have an easy time getting into PUGs as a Rit.

Of the core classes, each has there own speciality. I find most Necro builds to be a little boring to play (make minions, heal minions, make more minions - spam orders, spam orders, spam orders - etc). I haven't played my Necro since getting Olias.
Mesmer, despite what some people say, I find to be a lot of fun, with an Illusion/Domination mix of degen, interupt, etc. My Mesmer is one of my favourite classes to play (along with Ranger, Warrior, and Dervish)
Elementalist - every one loves the smell of Meteor Shower in the morning. I like to play as a water magic based ele too.
Warrior - most people run some sort of Tank build, but a more generalized Hack'n'slash build is more fun.
Monk - mostly used as a healer/protector. You don't see many Smiting monks around - I don't think they are as effective as other damage dealers. I haven't used my monk since getting Tahikora.

The new Template function makes it a lot easier to experiment with different builds.

Lately I've been playing mostly my Ranger - with Olias (MM), Jin, Margrid, and some henchies, I have my own little self-contained B/P group.

Your Ranger will still do well, especially in Factions where a lot of afflicted and other stuff bunch up, find my Barrage Ranger very effective in Factions.

The favs are still Warrior/Monk and maybe Necro, everything else is not so popula for groups.

A lot of people play without PUGs now, purely 3 Heroes and the rest Henchies (I know I do).
