[skill]Defender's Zeal[/skill]
Currently, the only thing your rank in smiting does is affect the duration of this spell.
Now, this spell is kinda powerful, 2 energy ~1.5 seconds is a great bonus, but its not helpful in a smiting build that uses mostly signets.
My suggestion is to add a little damage to it.
Not a lot, just something inbetween [skill=text]Empathy[/skill] and [skill=text]Visions of Regret[/skill].
Maybe add ~30-70 damage. (30 @ 0 and 70 @12)
I think this would add something nice to Smiters who don't see much play.
Monk skill buff- Defender's Zeal
Puebert
Dr Strangelove
It's actually an extremely powerful skill as is, it's just stuck in a near-worthless line.
Skye Marin
Tie it to Divine Favour, then cut the duration by a quarter and/or double the recharge time.
MithranArkanere
What about making it to recharge itself for x seconds (based on divine favor) anytime the target takes physical damage?
takeo otoshi
I think adding damage to that skill would make it worse, because then the target would instantly stop attacking. It would only buff the skill for PvE.
Puebert
In PvP your target would stop attacking anyway so the monk doesn't gain more energy.

Since it doesn't heal the target taking the damage or prevent some damage or damage the attacker , no , the person would keep attacking, unless this has some really easy animation to spot.
You stop attacking when you see the person got PS on them cause that animation clearly lets you see what it is.Same for some other skills, i have never used this skill so i don't know its animation.

It owns Hard Mode so very much.
It can't work in PvP to be blunt. It's a hex, if you're bringing hexes you're going to bring a lot of hexes. In which case anything that you would cast Defender's Zeal on will be hit with Faintheartedness, Spirit/Price of Failure, then attacking against Aegis and block stances so the energy return will be pathetic. If you think it needs a buff, change it to attack, not hit, so it's triggering on every swing regardless of whether the attack is successful or not.
Animation concern, it's pretty obvious. Big sword appears above the caster and the target.

Ooops, ignore my stupid comment -_- for some reason i thought it was an enchantment put on the ally taking damage.

Well the skill sucks for two reasons. Dr. Strangelove already stated the first one. It's in a sucky line. It means putting points in Smite attribute before it is worth bringing, and Smite stinks.
Second, it's a hex spell. The purpose behind the hex spell is to ultimately help the monk with regenerating energy, but the more subtle disadvantage is the fact that you must cast it on an enemy. Might not seem like a big deal, but when you're already having to keep your players alive, finding an enemy target and casting a hex on him can be quite 'costly' time-wise. In pvp, it's practically suicide to take your eyes off the players for a second. I say stick to healing spells, kid.

It is a terrible skill concept and I don't think any buff will help this skill unless reworking it. Adding damage to it can't make it any better.
Heck, it is ELITE SMITING skill and for energy management ONLY, and it doesn't even make ANY HARM to opponent unless maybe make their monk spend 5e to remove it ( or don't they ?). And if you go smiting, there are many other much better skill for energy management ( Gole, AI,..), while this is an ELITE skill and you have to depend on your opponent's attack to gain energy.
Even if it is non-elite skill, I don't think people will use it ( unless to use it as a cover hex).
Oh, and I'm talking about PvP, ofc.
