Which pet is the best?

Alright, I'm just looking for an idea of what pets someone thinks is the best. I would just like the pet you think is best then the reasons why. The main reason behind this board is because I have been through about 10 pets in the last week. I am unable to pick one and stick to it and I'm really quite desprate to find a pet. I'll take just about any pet, but I'm looking more at the group that grows in size over time. Anyone who can give me a hand I will be really thankful for.

the only difference between pets is the damage type (slashing, piercing, blunt). i beleive black bears have an attack skill which does no extra damage but triggers weapon spells and paragon shouts, not sure though. over all its just a matter of what you think looks cooler.

Bears do indeed use an attack skill called 'Brutal Mauling'. This attack skill, as said, does no additional damage and triggers every fourth attack. It does take longer for the bear to use the attack skill than it would for a normal attack, so the net result is that a bear will do less attacks in a period of time than any other pet, thus having a lower DPS. It has been found, however, that chants like Anthem of Flame will trigger from this skill, but most people don't find this reason enough to take a bear.

Brutal Mauling doesn't trigger paragon's shouts anymore. It's slower than a regular pet attack too.
So the answer is: It really makes no difference, except the bear is worse than all the others.

As had been said, the only real difference between pets is the type of damage they do. Bears are a little slower on DPS, but they are the largest and may make the best 'meat shield'. As far as pets that 'grow', check out GuildWiki to see which ones they are.

I've had many, many different pets (every cat, a wolf, strider, Moa, black Moa, spider, bear, etc.), but in the end I settled on a Lynx named Tigger Tu because he looks like one of my r/l pets, Tigger. (even more so than a Tiger, which is too orange.)

Btw, even 10k for a spider is ridiculous. Just go to the Underworld and get your own for free. During the last free-access-to-UW weekend, a Guildie and I (with Heroes) did the quest that gets you the spider several times (not that we wanted, or got, one). If you want to know the details of which quests to do, etc., just consult the aforementioned GuildWiki.

while I personally prefer a number of the other pets to the spider, I've helped guildies, friends, friends of guildies and total strangers get them. The easiest one to get will take 2-3 competent people perhaps 45 minutes, and of course more people can only speed things up.

Um, what's QFT?

Btw, even though I think 10k (or 25k) is a crazy price to pay for a spider, it is (as I often say) only "play money", so go for it.

I'll correct it slightly - it's a 4 adrenaline skill, so under normal circumstances is every 4th attack. If an enemy puts sooting images on the bear it'll never use it (yay!) and in Kourna all the archers using Infuriating Heat makes it use it more often, every second attack (boo!).

I've got a hyena atm after having a black moa, a tiger and a crab.

1st place: Hyena (they just look so tough and make funny noises)
2nd place: Dune Lizard
3rd place: a tie between the white tiger and the blue crab.

I know what cha mean, you have to either go all in or go home. Cause to make beast mastery even decent you need at least 10 points in it, and at least 3 skill slots used. Which can be a problem because it means that I have 0 in wilderness and all in beast, marks and expertise. Using Heal as one as my main heal atm...

Already said about what pet is the "best" so I dont want to repeat it.

Over 2 years and my ranger (my oldest character since the start of GW) and I still have my Melandru Stalker. I rarely see them since Nightfall with the other rangers I met... including crocodile

Well, in any case, you use the skill charm animal most of the time, but some animals require other things as well. You cannot "buy' a pet.

Guildwiki (the first one at least) is a great resource for pets if you don't want to go through the hassle of leveling them on your own. All my heroes have black moas. the quest was pretty easy to do in NM and its pretty simple to get to the moa time and again to charm it. The Black Moa comes to you at level 20 and is already a Dire pet which makes for pretty good damage if you want to run a pet build on heroes.

Most of my pve playable characters have elder pets, same as a PvP only character would get. You can get a list of elder pets off of wiki too. My most recent one was a white tiger for my monk. She likes it

I hope this information helps you in making your selection. THB, beyond the Elder/Dire/Hearty stuff, I don't see much difference in pets. I know different pets do different types of damage though. Some do piercing, so do slashing, etc.

don't spirders do posion or was that nerfed?

i had a bear and it did a critical hit with brutal mauling (forgot spelling).
pigs are by far the coolest, i havent seen a pig in ages. My best frind in RL has a pig in GW called bacon its awsome. since nobody chooses w/r as a profesion combo these days you don't get as many pets, when GW was in its early state you got alot of w/r with pets manly wolf. rangers all the way!

Anyways, I love my dire hyena! I had a dire spider before but that was boring so I got rid of it. Before that I had a crane, crab, bear, and wolf.

Do NOT get the bear, it's attack rate is slow unless you just want a big bear to be by your side just because it looks cool but that's a waste of 2 skill slots.

I like the crocodile too but I wanted a hyena instead.

Just get a pet that you think looks cool!

Black Widows are always level 20, and spawn with a random evolution. Black Moas have been observed with the properties of the Elder evolution. Besides that, I went for specific criteria:
A: The damage it dealt.
Seeing that I like to do PvP on my PvE Ranger, I wanted something that would do less uncommon damage. More people carry Shields versus Slashing. Elder Wolves, most prevalent Animal Companions in PvP matches deal Slashing damage. So if a noob wants to equip a +Slashing shield while I whack away, they aren't gaining any advantage versus the pet that I am using. Not like it matters anyway. Shields Up nerf doesn't help, and who wears Bonelace? Only problem is if I fought an opponent who faced an Assassin recently. Or know what damage the pet does, which leads to point D. Or if I'm using a Bow and the Pet, I'm particularly screwed.
B: If it seemed to grow or not.
Being dire, growth did not matter much, but I'd like a more compact pet so I don't run into it as often as a much larger pet.
C: Ease of capture
Face it, I don't use my pet in 80% of builds, so I don't want to spend hours upon hours just trying to capture it, then those extra hours training it for dire.
D: Being able to covet/shared skins
I don't really want a common pet (Wolves/Black Moa) or a pet that shares a skin with another (Lioness/Stalkers).
In the end, I just chose a Phoenix.

Pff, just hijack a trapper team with people that don't relaly know what they're doing and cap 1 yourself, thats what i did, all those months ago

The only real difference is that the pets that cause Piercing damage are most likely to have there damage reduced thanks to Shields Up and the Bear has the slowest attack speed. Other than that... take your pick.

I have a Dire Black Widow right now, got it half a year or so ago for 40k. Yes I know that may be a bit too much, but it took 3 tries to get a Dire to spawn.
Although I'm thinking of getting a Phoenix instead cause they look brighter instead of a dull black, fly (sorta), and make noises, and too many people have spiders.

I never get why people use Hearty Pets... if you take a pet you want it to do damage, not have some more health. No one will attack pets in PvP, and in PvE you want them to be attacked as they have a large array of great protection skills, so they should have lower health to be a more attractive target...

As shown in this thread, there is no BEST pet.

I personally went out and got a Spider from UW, but I just like the spider in general (what it looks like and the piercing damage).

All in all, its what YOU like the best. Dire, hearty etc... they all have pros and cons.

As far as WHICH to get, it can usually be a matter of which you think looks the cooliest, and which one you'd see yourself fighting alongside.

Go here: http://gw.gamewikis.org/wiki/Pet

And decide which you'd like to get, there is no best pet.
