So all the AVG lovers here...

Do you use the free one? If so, how do keep it from running as slow as molasses? After I tried it, I told myself to never forget there's no such thing as a free lunch.

using common sense when downloading programs or opening emails has kept my system free of any form of malware since I started using computers some 15 years ago or so.
i dont even visit those sites let alone be stupid enough to download/run something from them.

i actually have an idea i am going to play a GW session before i log in.

i run the antispyware IN THE BACKGROUND while i still am doing what i was allready doing anyway.

i lose no GW playtime doing this.

i check the results and log in.

what have i lost by running it in the background before i was going to log in?

you obviously got the program you mentioned from somwhere...you know...the program you said your anti-spyware saved you from...

how long does it take to initiate the scan and actually run the scan in the background?

When I want to play GW I start it up...If I notice an update is up before I start it up I run an -image shortcut first...then startup GW and login.

When you want to play GW you start up your anti spyware...then wait an undetermined amount of time doing something other than what you wanted to do...which is play gw...when it's done you start up gw...apply any patches...then login

Maybe I should put it simpler...

At one point in time you make a decision to play gw...the time between that point and the point in time when you login is what you lose...it is actual play time you have lost since if you hadn't started up your anti-spyware program...you would be logging in and playing. Your ending time for playing isn't a factor since that is determined separately...so if you insert extra steps after making the decision and before logging in...you have shortened your play time.

we'll have to agree to disagree...I and other people in this thread...think this is overkill and thus retarded...you don't. Why not just accept the fact that we think it is overkill? Just look at it this way...your method should ensure you're protected.

hi pal

it takes a few minutes running in the background while i am doing something else like looking at bitchfests here.

so making a quick check before GW is retarded?

so be it
#1- My Hard drive is big and packed. I usually have a full 250. A scan can take me a good half an hour.
#2- Like stated, thats Overkill. Thats like 2-3 scans a day. Doing that means you have absolutely no trust in yourself. And if its family members, get them a crappy computer and isolate yourself from them!
#3- My Isp gives out Nortons to all its users but since its not the latest 360 version, Its slow as hell and thats why I use Avg. I think it goes faster if your drive is fragmented (Note your guildwars should go faster too with a defrag) and if you run Ccleaner alot (Cleans invalid registry entries, junk from FF, IE, other programs, etc and any temporary files)

i got it from a secondary link from an AP news story with no downloading of files on my part.

starting the scan is 2 clicks and the inteliscan takes about 2/3 minutes.

it finishes long before i finish what i ws working on or reading here.

note that on several times when i was away from the pc for a long time the deep scan turned up nothing the inteliscan missed

we can cheerfully agree to disagree but to me 2/3 minutes while i am doing something else is not a problem.

if i waited close to an hour on the deep scan i would question my sanity as well.

Well i guess when it is a matter of 2/3, its never a problem. Btw, what scanner do you use?

I have to stress that protection software (antivirus, anti trojan, anti spyware) are meant to protect against known and common malicious code. (not someone's private program aimed at taking your guild wars login)

If someone programs their own keylogger and disguises it as a keygen, it will MOST LIKELY not be detected by commercial scanners or protection tools.

It's a catch-up game of security software vendors adding more and more profiles of malicious code as the malicious coders create an unending amount of software to score them $$$ and cost you $$$.

DO NOT have a FALSE SENSE of SECURITY just because you have loads of anti-blah blah blah software packages.

Best protection is common sense... (don't download these things which are too good to be true)

I have been using Ubuntu (linux) for over 20 months, without using any form of antivirus or malware software. I've had no problems at all. Linux & Mac (BSD) amongst others don't have virus problems worth worrying about.

I setup my IP tables as an excellent firewall, which I really don't need behind a NAT router anyway.

Guild Wars plays wonderfully under Linux, via Cedega (costs a minimum $15 US for life-time legality of the version you downloaded), & fairly recently under the free Wine software.

As far as the type of program this thread is about, that just takes a tiny bit of common sense to protect the user.

I love how someone does the favor of trying to tell people (mostly gullible kids who won't read this anyway) about a scam then everyone moves to a debate of what anti-malware vendor is better. How I miss the insane asylum that is gwguru.

Amen to that, and if it is as you say then wouldn't people that check off to remember the account not be in danger? Seeing as how they don't have to enter the account name, the person would only have a password to go on, unless of course they typed out their email address to a friend or something along those lines.

the problem here is that many people made their account with their one and only i use it everywher email address.

EVEN TO REGISTER HERE/TGH/GWO/ETC

send the person a question by email instead of a PM and they reply without even thinking about it giving up the email just like that.

Lol nice snikerz, he was clearly not being serious. Ahh... I love it when people go pyshco on others and acuse them of being terrible human being who steal money from others based on no evidence what so ever. If anything, what you just posted constitues criminal liable (since you just accused somebody of theft and internet fruad in writing in a public space).

People still fall for the "I'm a Nigerian seeking to flee my country... send me 500 dollars and you'll end up with 5 milion" junk mail... so why wouldn't they fall for this, too?

Think of it this way: Take a look at how stupid the average person is, then realize that half of the world is dumber than that. (With thanks to George Carlin.)

looked like one pretty serious sentence to me, he didn't add any smilies to indicate it was sarcasm

as the people above me have said, it's easy to trick someone.

so anyone else who reads that sentence would think it was safe and download it, making shizno liable.

sarcastic or not, he was telling the people the file was ok to download in a unsarcastic way, i.e. he didn't use *sarcasm* tags or even a smilie to go with it.

so if he had been serious, hes out there to steal accounts, don't you think he would be out to steal money as well?.

Sarcasm is fine and dandy, linking to such crap on forums is not.

Yeah, anyone who falls for this crap does not deserve better, but you are also not bright enough to get the idea that what you did is a bannable offense.

People dumb enough to fall for this and dumb enough to fail to read the EULA deserve what they get IMO, they try to exploit the game which is against the EULA. Yes someone else was trying to give you an exploit, but you were the one trying to use that exploit which is still against the EULA.
