Hi guys, I actually just started Guild Wars (Prophecies) and was having a little lag on music and sound. I ended up muting it because the choppiness was so irritating, which was really a shame because the music is really nice. So I decided to play around in Options for a moment to see if I could fix this little conundrum. Here's a very, very simple way to solve it (and now graphics and sound will run smoothly together):

1. Click "Menu" at the bottom left hand corner.

2. Click "Options".

3. Click "Graphics".

4. Look to the upper right hand area where it says "Refresh Rate".

5. The refresh rate allows the screen to fresh itself continuously so as to keep the graphics running smoothly (i.e. Leaves moving around need to move from frame to frame). Change this to a rate of about 75 Hz (this will refresh the screen fast enough but will not cause the image to bounce around as it might any faster).

5. Now you can adjust everything else to be as loud/high quality as you want without mishap!

This probably indicates that your system is low on resources for your sound. If you are using an integrated sound card, then lowering the graphics a bit might help. But this won't solve most of the sound problems people might get.

Im not sure how you managed to make the refresh rate fix your sound but kudos to you!

However most monitors run at a refresh rate of 60 (As does mine). I believe your issue was just a lack of system resources i guess.

Leave it at the Default, else you risk damaging your monitor.

If the system is using integrated sound and (probably) integrated video, then the CPU is doing it all. If its struggling because of one part its going to make other parts seem to lag too.

A little clarification about refresh rates: Only CRT monitors actually use refresh rates. For those of us with LCD monitors, we have refresh rates listed but they're there for compatibility purposes only. If you have an LCD its best left at 60hz... though it doesn't change anything tangible, it can cause issues with some games failing to start up.
