Okay so I have a decent gaming notebook that I've been playing Guild Wars on for about a year now. During then I have always used the application Xfire.
Well about two weeks ago I started getting strange FPS, strange lag, and weird stuttering problems with Guild Wars and EVERY other game I was playing.
So I took care of the usual suspects first:
1. Ran spyware/adaware/virus scans
2. Used my registry optimizer
3. Defragmented
4. Checked my router and connection settings
5. Checked my CPU temperature
and even after that, I still got these strange FPS spikes (I'd have 80 FPS in a town, and then every 30-60 seconds it'd stutter down to 1 then repeat the process)
So then I assumed that it might be my connection. I did speed tests, tested for packet loss, all that crap... nada, nothing. My connection tested fine, and I was able to ping servers.
So I thought I had tried everything, and I never suspected that Xfire was the culprit. I closed down absolutely everything except Guild Wars, Ventrilo, and my antivirus suite and closed Xfire down.
so after running Guild Wars without Xfire... what do you know... ran smooth as glass for HOURS.
then I tried running Guild Wars again with Xfire.... lag problems returned.
Bottom line... Xfire may be the cause of your lag/FPS problems. It most certainly was for me. I find this very disappointing as Xfire is one of my favorite messengers.
I find this so odd because I've been running Guild Wars with Xfire perfectly since Guild Wars launched.... what's up here? Either way, Xfire is coming off my system for now

1) Are you sure you have a decent rig? I know people who have said this and have 500mhz cpus and expecting god like fps
2)How long have you had this laptop? Performance on laptops tend to go down after a year or 2
3)Guild wars has been updated alot since it was released and is more demanding, Check your cpu usage with and without GW open because mine (with firefox open, no other background tasks) is 30% and with xfire 40% so xfire isn't causing my lag.

I'm using Vista Ultimate... but if I run GW without Xfire I get no problems, once and a while when I run it with Xfire I get exceptions from GW and it will shut the game down and I have to reboot the game.

I've had issues also. Never been a big Xfire user so getting rid of it wasn't a problem. Will most likely find that Xfire and Vista don't quite gel yet.

Xfire was very quick to get in bed with Vista and make sure it worked fine
however, only thing I and a few guildies have found recently (as all the guild is based around Xfire and forum usage, no matter what game they play) is that the ingame messaging thing isn't working in Guild Wars, but apparently this is something they are looking at
