Lockpick Retention Formula

Yes i'm aware its on Wiki, but would someone please care to give me the formula and explain it? I'm having a hard time following their explanation. I need to know how to figure your characters retention chances, and then to formulate the % chance to retain you need to have in order to break even (specifically the portion where you list how much you have to pay in order to accomplish this) Thanks
