Has Anyone else done this, or am I insane?
B E A S T
Ok, Ive been playing Guild Wars for a little over 9 months now. It was the first MMO type game I'd ever tried, and to say the least, I still love the game.
Anyways, I've had one main character who took up 95% of my playing time. I finished Prophecies and had done some of Factions and almost all of Nightfall with it. Well, lately I was getting easily bugged by things such as my characters name and appereance, the type of 15k armor he had, just little things like that. So, last night, when I was extremely tired, I deleted it.
Almost 400 hours and 1 million Guild Wars gold down the drain.
So, after making a new character of the same class with a diffrent name and looks, I have to wonder...am I insane? Has anyone else ever had an experience remotley like this?
If so, please respond. My guild thinks I'm an idiot and I would pretty much have to agree.

I have rerolled characters, but would never reroll a main that has completed every game, has 15k armor, and 1 million gold (which btw, why not storage it?). But at the end of the day, it is a game. It is meant to be played and to have fun, not build a legend. If you enjoy remaking him, his new look and his new name, then who loses? Also, why not just make it in a different slot?

I had a monk who had completed the game and had FoW armor. I proceeded to delete him and remake with a new name only. No customized weps though. It was worth it though honestly. I couldn't stand the name of the first monk... *shivers with dread*

Why do you need an entire forum to tell you that you are an idiot? Closure?

Is that irony?

lol thats terrible dude Ive done dumb stuff like posting insane bids in the high end forum when im drunk to retract or delete the next day but never deleted a character, felt itd be a waste of time if i did.

You are not alone. I did reroll my main too an year ago, beacause of the name..

Some people like the new character feeling. The feeling you get when you start a game is something incredible, Pre-sear syndrome.
You can't get that feeling if your char is having help all along, it's gotta be a "I'm going it alone against all monsters" kinda thing.
I understand what you did, however I don't have the courage to do it myself

No, you are not insane.
I deleted my ele with 15k armor (before factions when I actually bought pieces 1 by 1, alternated between monk and this guy here) with black (expensive, even though I had found the bottle) gloves. This was because I wanted to make a mesmer and also wanted to keep my necro and warrior around (neither had 15k though).
I didn't like the feel of playing as an ele anyway so I guess it's about having fun playing with the char. I deleted said Mesmer half a year later because he didn't look like I wanted. Then I tried to make a new one and found I couldn't make a mesmer I liked. Now he just wears masks all the time.
Oh, btw... my avatar beats your avatar Beast

I think now with the ability to have so many slots its a bit silly, I don't delete characters unless they are new and i'm going for survivor.
Before the ability to get ectra slots it made sense to reroll if you wanted different characters, with 4 slots and 6 professions it was necessary. now with 8 slots minimum, and the ability to have more I don;t think anyone needs to reroll their main character,
dont even like the idea of rerolling a minor one as it prevents birthday presents on it
its a matter of choice though really, if you feel its stupid then it is, if you don;t care about the time and stuff then its not

No OP you are not insane, maybe a bit overzealous, but not insane.
Lots of people have deleted their main toons (seems mostly for the name, per this thread), and lots of people have deleted toons that have finished all three campaigns (for whatever reason)....so dont feel insane, now you have a chance to do it all over again and again.. (personally I just get more slots and ignore the toons I am unhappy with--or they become mules for everyone else's sh-- stuff) ...
as long as you kept the plat and such I would have no remorse.

They're valid enough reasons to delete a character. If you're not happy with him, his name, his armor, etc., why not? Do what makes the game enjoyable, regardless of what others think.
I deleted all eight of my PvE toons a few weeks ago, including my monk who had People Know Me, FoW armor and over eight million experience.

I have a mesmer... my fourth prophecies character. First one got deleted within a month, other two are still kicking, but this mesmer.... I really didn't like her face (when compared with the many optioins available, it just seemed so vacant). So, I made a new mesmer... but i didn't delete the old one. Not until I got the new one to some place I was happy with it. So, yes, I've remade a chracter simply because i didn't like the look of her. And it was well over a year old.
As for names, The new name is much like the old. I choose my character's names very carefully, because i know that ppl will be calling me by that name in the game.

Doomus
I've deleted characters for their name or looks before, but luckily I came to the conclusion I didn't like them fairly early in their lives, before I'd spent more than a couple of evenings on each one. I'm more likely to delay making a new character because I dither so much about what to call them etc...

I understand people deleting old chars because of little dislikes -although it sucks to be you and find out about those dislikes only after so much time- and redoing them. For the lack of char slots I would not delete chars unless they were really not that well developed.

There's a thin line between geniality and insanity. Never make such a choice when you're tired though.
What I remember of this thread so far is that most of the time name changes are the reason. I hope Anet sees this thread and makes another brilliant move by making name changing possible.

I will either re-roll a character very quickly, or they stay with me forever!
Once they have lasted a month or so, then I find it impossible delete them. Even the bad ones have their own personality.
I messed up the name of one of my characters by mistyping "Vengeance" as "Vengenace" and didn't notice it until he had reached Level 20. Could I delete him? No!! He had his first birthday two weeks ago and got a nice Charr Shaman :-)
I would rather purchase an additional character slot than delete one of my characters.

I created one character and didn't realize that I was unhappy with her name until after I bought high end armour. Now I have just left her waiting, unplayed, until the day that aNet allows us the option of name-change.
Just one option, aNet... Just one single opportunity to change a characters' name and so many people would be better off.

I say allow one name change for each birthday the character gets. I think that would be fair and balanced. I'm also hoping we get some face/hair change options with GWEN since we won't be able to make new characters there.
Destinyy
bye bye birthday pressie...
Seriously, for lik 8 Euro, rather get another slot?
I have 12 chars now... lol, I only play on 3 or 4 tho, but I have the others there... cos you never know!!!
Personally, I think you are insane and I reckon you will regret your action shortly...

Yes Insane you can buy a new character slots for $9.99 thats like buying a month with $1.10 which is cheap cos you really cannot buy time.

I've made, deleted and remade 3 monks with max armor, and made, deleted and remade 2 necros with max armor:P Reasons for that was because i got bored of playing them very quickly, and when i only had 4 char slots because of only Prophecies being out.

While I never deleted a character with that much investment, it took me about 6 times making Eles, taking them halfway through a campaign, and then deleting them. It was all cool though, I enjoyed it!

It's about starting over. Some people delete their main, and made a new one (same name) to access certain Titles (survivor or Legendary Defender for example).
Some people want to keep the name, but have a new face, hair, sex, etc.
Some people want to keep the appearance, but change the name.
There are a million reasons to delete a character, time spent on said character notwithstanding: In the end, you own the game, and you can play it the way you want.
(Hint: you don't actually have to finish any of the campaigns if you don't want to, either!)
redant751
I can't do that,I have deleted toons when I first started but after finishing a chapter,I can't see doing that.
At this moment I have 2 accounts with 14 toon in each.

This is why you choose your names carefully..But I would love to rename my Monk, We Be Monkin :/...No way I'm going to delete him tho..thats just crazy..You crazy crazy guy.

First off OP I dont think you are insane, Maybe a little nuts but not insane. I have deleted a couple charactors, mostly because I didn't like the way the class played or what not.
My only real comment to make about this is that you should really think about your cahractors more when you set them up. I know alot of people who run through the charactor creation part in 2 sec, and throw the first thing that comes to mind on their name. The a couple months later they think, why that name was I drunk? Solution take some time, find the face u want, name it something creative, and then enjoy the game.
On a seperate note: I do not support name changes or face changes: But ANET Please give us someone who can change the char hair!!!

Are you insane....no
Are you an idiot....no
Did you do something stupid....yes....everyone does something stupid now and then.
I did something similar with my very first character....who would easily be 2 years old now if I hadn't deleted her. One night for some reason I decided to delete her...may have been her looks...wasn't the name since I still like the name. Lost a couple good sets of 15k armor and about 100k in gold when I deleted her. I have no idea why I did it...but like you it was when I was tired. I got a thought in my head and did it before my brain kicked him to correct itself. Stupid Move? Yes.
Now she's the most rerolled character on my accounts because she's my favorite character and I'm going for legendary survivor with her.

I think I will go for a survivor title on this character tho...I saw a good thread a while back about farming Jade Brotherhood to get it.
Anyways, I'm glad I'm not alone in this suddenly cold, cruel world

After playing the game for over a year, my fiancee finally decided on a naming scheme that all his characters hold up. Well, he had already made three lvl 20's (warrior, mesmer, ranger), all with 15k armor and none had the approved naming scheme. So he deleted them and remade. Of course it only takes him a couple days to grind up another lvl 20 and he has one for every class already (all under his naming scheme).
I still think he was crazy lol. IMO it's worth the ten bucks to buy a char slot so that all your hard work isn't wasted. Then again, I am a packrat and we are a dual income family so 10 bucks into too much of a strain whereas it might be on other people.
