What's Good about GW?
krogie
Hi, I've just bought this game and in the middle of installing and updating it. But I have a few questions I dont think the manual is going to explain.
What's the main purpose of GW?
for example:
WoW (World of Warcraft) PVP, they base the entire game around it and the end game content is fun
Lotro (Lord of the ring online) Graphics, the graphics in the game are incredible.
UO (ulitma Online) Content, this game has more content and items then i've ever seen on any game.
I've read alot about GW and it looks fun to play. I love the ideas ncsoft came up with. and looking forward to paying.
But on another note, I've no this question has been answered many times but I thought i post it anyway to see some responses.
What profession should I take? (what class in underpmaned and it a good class to play)
I've read on the forums a Mo/A is good to play but there seems to be to many of them. Please let me know.

I would advise starting out with a Warrior Monk while you learn the interface and skills. Once you understand how Guild Wars works, try all the professions until you find the one that suits you best.

there is a huge focus in the game on skill. not just in game skills but how the player puts those skills to use.
PVP is a big attraction of GW....where as WoW is more equipment based pvp...and GW is skill based PVP
WoW PVP= best geared team wins
GW PVP = Best skilled tactical team wins (for the most part)
also the PVE is fun to a degree there are numerous prestigious items you can get through pve...such as rare armor and weapons. the story line is a bit linear or one directional...you don't have a lot of freedom as you do in most MMO...
But all in all...after 19 months and 3,000 + hours i still enjoy GW...not as much as i did the first 2000 hours but thats because i am waiting on the next chapter

Here is what is good about GW:
-Graphics
-Lore/Storyline (Best I've seen in ages)
-Skill/Build System
Here is what is bad about GW:
-Anet often neglects problems too long, so ppl "rage" (leave) the game/community.
-PvP NOT being skill based, but rather Skill-Abuse based: If u find an overpowered combo (Iway + Pets, Spirit Rift + Ancester's Rage, 8 N/Mo's with Life Stealing, ...) You'll win, if U have NO "overpowered" skills, you'll loose.
-Limited modding of characters (We want MORE armors, weapons AND customized mods...)
In overal it's a GOOD game, worth playing, but it has been detoriating lately, Anet is pretty much being busy creating new games, not realizing there is a community cryin for attention...

Well, one persons passion is another's poison. Here's what I like about the game...
I love the graphic style. I want to play a fantasy game, but Wow is a bit too cartoonish for me. I think the characters are well rendered and some of the scenery is absolutely delightful.
Variety is very important to me and GW has a great deal of it. I like the different armor and weapons that you can work your way up to. (if anything, I wish there were even more customization in the game.)
Purpose of the game, you say? Well, that's up for you to decide. If you like PvP play, there's plenty of it. You can match wits with formidable human opponents or follow the PvE missions and quests. The story line is a bit better than most in fantasy games (not "great" mind you, but relatively entertaining).
To sum up, I think it's a good mix. It has many of the elements that other games do....but with no monthly fee.
A word of note, by the way...If you're new to this forum you may hear much about how the game has "declined". This is simply a matter of opinion. The game may have changed since it's inception, but to many the game is still fun to play. I can understand the frustration some experience at having something they're happy with turn into something different. (television programmers have been pulling their hair out for generations trying to keep shows fresh without alienating their viewers). As someone "just tuning in" to GW, you're seeing it with an unbiased outlook. Don't let others or their attitudes (good or bad) sway your interest in the game.
Picking a profession is dependent upon the style of character you want to have. http://gw.gamewikis.org/wiki/Profession is an excellent source of info for people just starting out.
Cheers, and happy conquering!

In addition to the things already mentioned, one of the nicest features IMO is the ability to play (most of) the PvE content with:
> other real people, or
> all by yourself, using the henchmen/heroes
> other real people, or

As far as this game goes, the story line are great, Even Faction (Albeit way to short) Graphics are wonderful, the Skill required to play this game makes it extreamly full, all in all prob the best online game I have played.
Coloneh
what WoW calls PvP dosnt even compare to GW. We have the best PvP system of any game in this genre by far.
Traveller
GW graphics are really great, not cartoony at all and very realistic. That's what I like about it, plus the fact that there are no monthly fees. If I get bored, I can take a break and return later.

Warriors are definitely the best class to start with. If you ever get mobbed as a spell caster, run. Don't even finish your spell. Just run. It will save you a lot of trouble. And don't listen to the elitist. There's nothing wrong with a Warrior/Monk. I still use a W/Mo. After all, some teams are so terrible, they'll NEED an infinite res.
BaconSoda
When it comes to what class to begin playing as, just read through the manual and pick whatever you think suits you best. If it isn't the best thing for you, you always have the other 3 character slots

I'm mostly focused on the PvE side of Guild Wars so I'll give you my opinion.
Each game in the MMO market has a line which you progress down to become more powerful.
Your standard MMO (WoW/Lotro/Daoc) has a long thin vertical line, it takes a fair while to get to max level playing casually and after that is complete the levelling is then transferred to your equipment, you're not given a great deal of freedom to move off this line.
Guild Wars differs from these in that the line is a lot shorter but it's very wide. Rather than having a long thin progression with very few posibilites, you're given a short progression with lost of possibilities contained within (Skills, Attributes, Armor, Weapons, Insignias, Runes) you start with a limited set of possibilites but as you progress more are made available to you.
The only thing that's set in stone is your primary class everything else can be changed either very cheaply or for no cost at all. This makes it very easy to try something out and then go back if you don't like it, or even store a large number of favoured builds for certain situations.
This is the main thing I like about guild wars, but things like collectable skills and fast travel help as well.
They could do with an auction house though, compared to other games, it's very difficult to find someone selling something or trying to sell something to someone else.

LoL. He lost me when he said WoW was good for PvP.
Oh, please don't make a Warrior/Monk. You'll be ridiculed.

I find that the graphics are very realistic, but the thing that keeps me going is the storyline. GW is one of the only free subscription games that actually has a storyline.

ignore the person who says GW is all about skill abuse. while there are overpowered skills, abusing them to no end won't get you very far.
GW is the only mmorpg to feature balanced pvp. if you enjoy pvp, then GW is for you. don't look for huge flashing numbers though.
