that'd be either henchmen or heroes. to get: to get henches, go to any non-presearing town, click on hench, add him/her leave town. to get heroes, go buy nightfall, play it and you'll see.

I believe you're thinking of Heros. They're customizable henchmen. You get them as you progress through Nightfall.

You have 4 ways of getting other characters with you.
1) henchmen, every outpost outside of presearing has them
2) heroes, you'll need to buy nightfall or eye's of the north (when it's released) for these
3) other players, just join a group of other players
4) 2nd account, this is of cource the most difficult as you'll really want to heads and 4 arms so you can control them both at the same time

If you are getting the GW:EN expansion there will be 10 heroes with that as well. Possibly Anet will add heroes over time to the other campaigns as well now that they've been out awhile, but dont count on it being conveniently soon.
