monk size

though monks come i many sizes, ive noticed that people who play monk in pvp arena are like 2 feet high. i was curious as to whether these people really think that making a tiny character will make them less visible or less likely to be targeted or if its just an aesthetic choice.

Seriously? No real reason. Especially when we have Ctrl and Tab.
Maybe people like midgit monks.

Small monks look cuter.
Big monks tend to look strange and awkward in comparison due to their scarceness.
It is kind of a fad now in GW for to make small monks, particularly when female.
This is based on my ingame observations and may not be 100% correct. <-lol.

Ever heard of the term: Mini-monk?
Sadric
People think they are less likely to get bodyblocked the smaller they are, not sure if they are correct. That could be one reason.

I think people make small characters because they are infatuated with small things and think they are cute, take a bull and a cat for instance wich one would more people like the big buff ugly bull or the litte cute kitty? it is the players choice but then again they might think they are less noticable which is well dumb in this game lol, beause there are options to find them easliy and I personally would notice a small person out of a regular sized or tall group of people hight is one of the most noticable features SO I don't know what people think when they make a small character but it is their choice.

Big monks just look weird =P
....to me anyway. I don't think I've ever made a monk over half the scale.

All my characters, (all female), are smallest size.
Just personal preference
Besides, when my Ele takes down a warrior twice her size………………

On a semi-related note, why do most people make male warriors max height?

KANE OG
Nevermind. I thought you were talking about penises.

Very subtle psychology, I think. Being small tends to diminish threat perception in our own primal instincts, giving you an extra 1/4 second or so to cast spells, while n00bz realize you're the monk and try to kill you. Opposite for the warriors, they try to make themselves as big and scary looking as possible. Either that, or the type of people that play warriors always feel the need to compensate for something :P

Female monks have one of the smallest hight "caps"

Tegato
Well, it's all down to the stereotypes. Warriors, usually male, are considered to be huge in size, and very buff. Monks however, are not strong, and are rather meant as the support character, so they're usually viewed as small.
I just think of monks as pocket monks or Pokemonk. I mean, when you were a little kid, didn't you want one?

Actually most players create small monks due to the fact that they are harder to see and click, also it is harder to get boody blocked, and small characters also take slightly less damage from lightning damage as the electricity is grounded faster, in return large characters take less damage from earth damage as they are considered more stabile thus having less trouble with earth based atacks.
Ok most of you know that's complete bullshit, no you are most likely not harder to spot, and all character have the same "boxes" meaning no matter what your visual size is you will still be as easy or hard to body block, no matter if you look like a house or a rabbit. And the damage thingies were just to let the sarcasm shine through if someone didn't get it before that.
So why are monks small then? Wellpeople here have sort of answered that already, but just to write it in stone, why are warriors large?
Simply because the idea which most people have of a monk, is a small fragile fella who has still got a great gift through the divine, whilst the warriors lack this divine thing they simply have to make that up with a lot of muscles and a couple of exta inches.
So monks are small because the earth is round.
That's as true as the sky is green! (you'll get that if you've played Dreamfall the Longest Journey =) )

The thought of people "compensateing" well is quite immature 1st of all and it dont matter what size you are all the other people got to do is hold down the "ctrl" or click the "c" button then cycle through the targets and find the monk size doesn't mean harder to find. So its all a preference of the individual and what they may or may not thiink.

My 1st 2 chars were medium height; with the exception of 1 W I deliberately made max height, all my subsequent chars are min height, prob to reflect the fact that I'm pretty short in RL.
And following the old adage that big things come in small packages, I think I'm slightly amused by the massive damage being inflicted by these tiny toons.
"Big monks just look weird" - Big monks don't bother me; personally, I've always found giant male mesmers to be rather unsettling.

Giant male mesmersr ARE creepy, but are as nothing compared to those freakish giant ele's that wander around...
Having played a little with the height scale thing it does appear that monks have a lower height range than warriors and paragons.
Personally my monk is in the mid-range for possible heights, and yes, he does come out small, but as has already been said it's about perception. My warrior isn't max height, but very nearly as he's supposed to be a hulking slab of meat hitting people with shaped lumps of iron. My Paragon is supposed to be a battlefield commander, commanding presence = height + steely gaze, which is what I set him up for. The thing I really don't get is why mesmers and ele's *can* be taller than warriors/paragons... it just seems wrong to me, plus they look like they have that 'gigantism' type disease and they look freaky to me...
no more giant ele's or mesmers please...

Monks have no necks and are all round kind of chubby. They look too behemouth if they're tall... It's ok for the huge meatwad of warriors...they're meant to be intimidating...but an intimidating monk?? Too weird...
Commander Ryker
I made my monk small so he would be a smaller target.

Its all psychological , you are smaller , so you have the idea that you are harder to see and to be hit.It also has to do with clicking ,but this isnt only psychological, it is somewhat true, i mean being smaller you are harder to be clicked on, however we do have the tab, but still that might take 7 tabs when your trying to tab thru 8 people in GvG.
But the reality is there is no real reason, monks are just expected to be small and warriors are just expected to be huge.It just doesnt look right with a huge monk or a midget warrior.( don't even think about mentioning WoW characters -_- )

I created my monk with the possible smallest size as I think it's funny when a small invinci-monk is beating on huge Attaxes ^ ^

Tab targeting aside, smaller avatars have a very slight advantage when it comes to escaping human player attention.
Smaller avatars are a tradition that goes back fairly far in online PvP games. In DAoC and, later in WoW, this habit of making certain classes as small as possible (if you had a choice) was fairly common.
In DAoC for instance, you could hide in a bush or clump of trees in order to ambush enemy players or at least get the drop on them so you could fire off your AoE CC.

I dunno, I've just always made small characters, except for maybe my 1st two, can't really remember, but if not smallest size, they're pretty tiny.
Like playing on my war who's small sized, then standing next to war some of the other warriors in my alliance and coming up to their chest. Quite funny
But big monks do look a little odd, armour looks a little stretched on them. Plus the old belief that it's possible to get hit less if tiny. I just like being the smallest char in the alliance with her

i dunno but i made all my characters smallest possible, huge characters look wierd imo ^^ but that's just me

guess since your obviously going to get targeted its some subconcious inclination to avoid attention, seems a little silly though. i mean would you also dye your monk armor green to avoid detection... seriously. make big monks! size matters, really.
Jumping Is Uselss
I dont care about the heights of my characters. I just make them and use the preset height, I hardly ever touch the height meter. However when I made my warrior I was thinking of Master chief from from Halo who was like 7ft tall, so i made my warrior huge
. My monk is average height (same height as Rurik
). What height is considered huge for female ele? Max? My ele's height is a bit taller than Cynn.

Did you ever notice how tall Alesia and Lina are?

The first monk that I created was medium height -- the exact center of what could be made. After deleting that one I made a new monk that was as small as possible because I wanted to see as much of the screen as I could at any given time. Having a big body taking up a bunch of pixels just was't efficient. Then my play partner made a male necro as small as was possible and I made a female monk as large as was allowed, just for contrast... Guess what? The necro is still just a tad taller. For some reason GW doesn't believe in tall female monks.

This is kinda a funny observation to me. I have a monk (female) who is as small as they come, she looks like a pigmy elf. And a warrior (male) that is as big as they come.
Why? couple things. I know about tab to switch targets, truth is most poeple use c space. So having a small monk allows you to hide from people who dont use the Tab tecqnique. Does it always work? No actually most times it doesn't but those one or two times it does great. But then again I don't pvp much, and rarely monk in PvP. So why did I make her small?
Simple, she looks cool small. Spec standing next to a huge warrior. Thats it. most of my female charactors are small (Monk, ele, Necro, sin,rit and derv) and my male charactor (War, Ranger) are big. call it sexist but maybe something Froidian is comming out in me
